Community Engagement Project
The community that I have chosen for this task is the local
church group that resides in my locality. This is a group of
people that belong to the age group of 40 years to 70 years.
There are men and women both in this group and they take
active part in the activities of the church. They are a close knit
community and there are mostly retired people in the group.
These people give a lot of time to the church and they organize
several functions together in the honor of the church as well.
This community is a very interesting mix of culture and
professionalism. There are people ageing between 40 to 70
years in this group and they come from different professional
and cultural backgrounds. This church is the place that unites
them. Most of these people have been working throughout their
lives and they carry the wisdom of all that experience with
them. Elder people have varied experiences in different
departments and functions of their professions and this can
make them a very strong group if they come together and form a
working community of professionals (Bruce, 2002). Together
they can make a successful business venture given their
experience.
This community that I have chosen is very important to the
society and to the members of this community individually as
well. It is important for the people of the older age to have
company as it prevents them from falling into depressive phases
of life (Lawton, 2007). This particular community is an
important part of our society because they help the younger
people with their advice and support. They share their
experience with them and help them take better decision.
Individually they help each-other in loneliness and keep
everybody company. Together they form a group towards which
the whole society looks when it comes to any moral or
emotional confusion.
While this community looks very established and united
today, they have had a really hard time in the past. They have
overcome several challenges that they had to face during their
development. One of these challenges was the adjustment with
technology. It is observed that 58.9% of people over the age of
50 years have problems adjusting to the new mobile and internet
revolution (Cole, 2003). This has been a huge struggle. Apart
from that these people also had to face the physical challenges
that come with age such as fatigue, weakness and poor eyesight
that has prevented them to act more actively.
The first goal out of the three that I would like to see as an
outcome here is proper awareness of technology. The older
people tend to have difficulties using the new mobile phones
that are laced with latest technology. This creates problem in
communication and their safety as well. I have observed one of
the members of this community suffer a heart attack and since
she was not able to use the mobile phone, she had to crawl to
the landline to dial the emergency helpline of the hospital. This
incident has compelled me to think about this challenge and
solve it.
The second goal for this community will be to help them
get physically fit. The old age hits the people with bad force
and they suffer from various health problems. Exercise and diet
can help in solving these problems but these people do not care
enough and most of the times they do not have the capacity to
move around without help which restricts a lot of pleasures of
their lives. There is a gentleman of 67 years of age who was
unable to bend down to pick up his things for almost 4 years but
exercise has helped him and now he is capable of moving
around alone and work properly without any support.
The third goal of this community should be to socialize
more with the younger generation of the neighborhood. It is
observed that the communication gap between the younger and
older age creates a lot of irritation in the older people as they
find it hard to manage the changes in times (Blazer, 2006). In
order to solve this there should be interactive gatherings where
these people can interact with younger people and adjust to
their perspectives as well while the younger people can benefit
from their guidance. The leading member of this community felt
very well after he got a chance to meet a young person from a
computer agency who taught him how to make minute repairs to
his computer.
Based upon the challenges and the goals of this community
this community needs to work upon these problems. The needs
that arise here is the requirement of proper training and
interaction with the experts. The elders are required to be
trained and taught about how to develop the interest and
motivation towards the same. The elders should be brought in
contact with people that can train them and make them
understand the importance and advantages of using proper
technologies (Hatch, 2003). To bring the desirable outcomes
from these trainings the elders and trainers need to be
coordinated well.
Each of the above mentioned needs is related with
community goals. These challenges create more problems for
the elders by posing security risks and health hazards. When it
comes to physical fitness it is important for the older people to
stay fit as they stand at a very delicate age and they need to stay
strong. Also physically fit elders are more likely to live a happy
life without any depression. Those who stay connected through
technology are less likely to be stressed because they can
communicate and thus stay safe (DeSalvo, 2007). The elders
who interact with the younger people feel more confident
because they are asked questions about the subjects they are
experts upon.
When it comes to priorities, health should be the biggest
priority of an individual or a community. I will definitely put
the physical fitness of this community on the topmost priority
because it will decide their future and contribution to the social
circles as well. The second priority will be their mental security
and well-being for which technology will be the next step.
When it comes to the third priority confidence building is
important and hence their interaction with the younger people is
the third priority.
As a member of the community I would need certain skills
to help these people to learn the new techniques or inhabit the
healthy habits so that they can improve the quality of their
lives. I would bring them in contact with technology through
demonstrations and make them use the same so that they can
become familiar with it. I will also engage them into more
fruitful gatherings where they will be collectively told about the
benefits of learning to address these needs. Thus it is clear that
learning new technologies, staying physically fit and interacting
with the younger generation are some of the very important
needs for this community. I identified them by staying with
them and observing their behavior and this helped me in
engaging into their daily lives better. The nature of these needs
is clearly assessable through the observations made during this
exercise.
The main goal of this community is to spread the message
of the church and keep the whole society connected in terms of
religious teachings and spiritual faith. In order to accomplish
this goal, the community needs to stay together and stay strong.
These needs that have been identified through this needs
assessment are strongly related to the goals of this community
because if they stay strong and communicate they will be able
to establish their mission in a better manner.
Meeting these goals by tackling the needs of the
community is important because when the needs of the
community are met, they help the community get closer. When
their needs are met they find themselves stronger and confident
and can contribute more to the society. Their lives are enriched
and they find a positive direction where they do not lack the
basic needs. Fulfilling the community’s needs is a very decent
way to accomplish the goal of social strength.

Donald Niewyk, The Holocaust (New York: Houghton Mifflin,
1997)
The Holocaust is a topic that we learned about in class and the
assigned readings. The term describes the Nazi’s murder of six
million European Jews as well as several million more Slavs,
Gypsies, and other non-Aryan people. The Holocaust took place
during the years 1939-1945. This was also the time that many
countries fought in World War Two. The Holocaust featured
several death centers located in Poland such as Auschwitz and
Treblinka. Although Western countries such as the United
States knew about the Holocaust while it was happening, there
were very few direct efforts aimed at stopping the killing. The
Holocaust was one of many terrible things that happened during
WW II.
I was interested in learning more about the Holocaust. In the
library, I found a book by Donald Niewyk called The Holocaust.
This book had various interesting chapters about the topic. One
section called “There Was No Order” explained how Adolf
Hitler did not write out directions for his followers. In fact, the
people who put together the Holocaust came up with their own
plans for killing Jews that they hoped would impress Hitler
(Niewyk, 27). I learned that Hitler was not a very involved
leader when it came to the daily running of the government. It
surprised me to learn that he did not give specific orders, but
instead made his wishes known and the rewarded people for
following through. From this book, I learned that the most
horrible crime in the 20th Century was committed by ordinary
people trying to gain status with Hitler and his Nazi leadership.

Library Assignment #3
Using the college’s library or a scholarly on-line source, please
select one of the following topics to research. These topics are
all something that we covered in class or are mentioned in the
assigned class readings.
After locating a useful book/article--and remember that “.edu”
and “.gov” sites are the most reputable places to research--your
assignment is to write a 300-word review (double spaced Times
New Roman 12 font) about the research you found.
In the first paragraph, explain the topic you selected. Just write
four of five sentences introducing the topic and sharing what
you know about the topic from our lectures or the assigned
readings. That would be paragraph number one.
In paragraph two, please share something new that you learned
about the topic from your research. That would also be four or
five sentences in which you work to connect what we studied
with something that you discovered. I have posted a
full/complete example of what I think a good library assignment
document looks like on Blackboard. Please feel free to copy the
style and structure closely.
PLEASE DO NOT USE WIKIPEDIA AS YOUR SOURCE! IT
WILL RESULT IN AUTOMATIC POINT DEDUCTIONS.
Also remember: you will assemble/collect your library
assignments over the course of the next two months. You DO
NOT hand them in weekly although I am happy to look them
over for you when we go to the library. My suggestion is that
save them on a disc or print them out and place them in a folder.
The assignments are due, all together, during the last week of
class as noted in the class syllabus.

Assessment 3: Community Website Overview Having identified
the needs and challenges facing a community of your choice
(Assessment 2), create a website that meets those needs and
helps to alleviate those challenges. In the proces of creating
your website, consider: - Presenting your rationale for how your
website tackles particular needs in your given community.
Explain also how your website will help your community
achieve their goals. You might consider having an introductory
page, or 'manifesto' that explains this rationale. - The way your
website communicates information to your community and on
its behalf (ie., the intellectual 'pitch', the tone, the language you
use to convey ideas, specific terminology used in the
community. - The types of information that are useful to your
chosen communty. Knowledge is power, so what sort of
knowledge will you include to establish positive power
relations? - Ethical considerations such as what topics is is
appropriate to discuss, or not, and what images it is acceptable
to use. - Links to organisations and institutions that your chosen
community could benefit from knowing more about. - Ways of
empowering the identity of your chosen community. - Methods
of interactive communication and education that can create an
effective digital social space. - App technologies (many free in
Wix) that can be used to meet community needs, and develop
positive social changes.
Â
Assessment 2 and 3 are linked. Assessment 2 is the 'professional
back-end' report that identifies the specific challenges faced by
a particular community and identifies what that community
needs in order to be supported/strengthened. Assessment 3 is a
solution-oriented website where you will create an online
resource to help tackle those needs. The results of your analysis
in Assessment 2 should directly inform the online solutions you
create in Assessment 3.
Assignment 3
Community Website“ See the unit Learning Guide (on the Key
Unit Documents and Information page) for instructions on how
to complete your assessments. Below are some resources and
links that will help you maximize your mark!
· Link to example community websites:
. The Homeless Garden Project
. Gang Rescue and Support Project (GRASP)
. Pacific Women Shaping Pacific Development
Note that all of these websites include information about WHAT
the needs of their community are, and also a rationale for HOW
their solutions target those needs – this is a good example of
what to include in your website!
· Link to a short instructional video on how to make a website
in Wix

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROJECT2COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROJECT.docx

  • 1. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROJECT 2 COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROJECT Community Engagement Project Teven Mohun 18608524 Community Engagement Project The community that I have chosen for this task is the local church group that resides in my locality. This is a group of people that belong to the age group of 40 years to 70 years. There are men and women both in this group and they take active part in the activities of the church. They are a close knit community and there are mostly retired people in the group. These people give a lot of time to the church and they organize several functions together in the honor of the church as well. This community is a very interesting mix of culture and professionalism. There are people ageing between 40 to 70
  • 2. years in this group and they come from different professional and cultural backgrounds. This church is the place that unites them. Most of these people have been working throughout their lives and they carry the wisdom of all that experience with them. Elder people have varied experiences in different departments and functions of their professions and this can make them a very strong group if they come together and form a working community of professionals (Bruce, 2002). Together they can make a successful business venture given their experience. This community that I have chosen is very important to the society and to the members of this community individually as well. It is important for the people of the older age to have company as it prevents them from falling into depressive phases of life (Lawton, 2007). This particular community is an important part of our society because they help the younger people with their advice and support. They share their experience with them and help them take better decision. Individually they help each-other in loneliness and keep everybody company. Together they form a group towards which the whole society looks when it comes to any moral or emotional confusion. While this community looks very established and united today, they have had a really hard time in the past. They have overcome several challenges that they had to face during their development. One of these challenges was the adjustment with technology. It is observed that 58.9% of people over the age of 50 years have problems adjusting to the new mobile and internet revolution (Cole, 2003). This has been a huge struggle. Apart from that these people also had to face the physical challenges that come with age such as fatigue, weakness and poor eyesight that has prevented them to act more actively. The first goal out of the three that I would like to see as an outcome here is proper awareness of technology. The older people tend to have difficulties using the new mobile phones that are laced with latest technology. This creates problem in
  • 3. communication and their safety as well. I have observed one of the members of this community suffer a heart attack and since she was not able to use the mobile phone, she had to crawl to the landline to dial the emergency helpline of the hospital. This incident has compelled me to think about this challenge and solve it. The second goal for this community will be to help them get physically fit. The old age hits the people with bad force and they suffer from various health problems. Exercise and diet can help in solving these problems but these people do not care enough and most of the times they do not have the capacity to move around without help which restricts a lot of pleasures of their lives. There is a gentleman of 67 years of age who was unable to bend down to pick up his things for almost 4 years but exercise has helped him and now he is capable of moving around alone and work properly without any support. The third goal of this community should be to socialize more with the younger generation of the neighborhood. It is observed that the communication gap between the younger and older age creates a lot of irritation in the older people as they find it hard to manage the changes in times (Blazer, 2006). In order to solve this there should be interactive gatherings where these people can interact with younger people and adjust to their perspectives as well while the younger people can benefit from their guidance. The leading member of this community felt very well after he got a chance to meet a young person from a computer agency who taught him how to make minute repairs to his computer. Based upon the challenges and the goals of this community this community needs to work upon these problems. The needs that arise here is the requirement of proper training and interaction with the experts. The elders are required to be trained and taught about how to develop the interest and motivation towards the same. The elders should be brought in contact with people that can train them and make them understand the importance and advantages of using proper
  • 4. technologies (Hatch, 2003). To bring the desirable outcomes from these trainings the elders and trainers need to be coordinated well. Each of the above mentioned needs is related with community goals. These challenges create more problems for the elders by posing security risks and health hazards. When it comes to physical fitness it is important for the older people to stay fit as they stand at a very delicate age and they need to stay strong. Also physically fit elders are more likely to live a happy life without any depression. Those who stay connected through technology are less likely to be stressed because they can communicate and thus stay safe (DeSalvo, 2007). The elders who interact with the younger people feel more confident because they are asked questions about the subjects they are experts upon. When it comes to priorities, health should be the biggest priority of an individual or a community. I will definitely put the physical fitness of this community on the topmost priority because it will decide their future and contribution to the social circles as well. The second priority will be their mental security and well-being for which technology will be the next step. When it comes to the third priority confidence building is important and hence their interaction with the younger people is the third priority. As a member of the community I would need certain skills to help these people to learn the new techniques or inhabit the healthy habits so that they can improve the quality of their lives. I would bring them in contact with technology through demonstrations and make them use the same so that they can become familiar with it. I will also engage them into more fruitful gatherings where they will be collectively told about the benefits of learning to address these needs. Thus it is clear that learning new technologies, staying physically fit and interacting with the younger generation are some of the very important needs for this community. I identified them by staying with them and observing their behavior and this helped me in
  • 5. engaging into their daily lives better. The nature of these needs is clearly assessable through the observations made during this exercise. The main goal of this community is to spread the message of the church and keep the whole society connected in terms of religious teachings and spiritual faith. In order to accomplish this goal, the community needs to stay together and stay strong. These needs that have been identified through this needs assessment are strongly related to the goals of this community because if they stay strong and communicate they will be able to establish their mission in a better manner. Meeting these goals by tackling the needs of the community is important because when the needs of the community are met, they help the community get closer. When their needs are met they find themselves stronger and confident and can contribute more to the society. Their lives are enriched and they find a positive direction where they do not lack the basic needs. Fulfilling the community’s needs is a very decent way to accomplish the goal of social strength. • 6. Donald Niewyk, The Holocaust (New York: Houghton Mifflin, 1997) The Holocaust is a topic that we learned about in class and the assigned readings. The term describes the Nazi’s murder of six million European Jews as well as several million more Slavs, Gypsies, and other non-Aryan people. The Holocaust took place during the years 1939-1945. This was also the time that many countries fought in World War Two. The Holocaust featured several death centers located in Poland such as Auschwitz and Treblinka. Although Western countries such as the United States knew about the Holocaust while it was happening, there were very few direct efforts aimed at stopping the killing. The Holocaust was one of many terrible things that happened during WW II. I was interested in learning more about the Holocaust. In the library, I found a book by Donald Niewyk called The Holocaust. This book had various interesting chapters about the topic. One section called “There Was No Order” explained how Adolf Hitler did not write out directions for his followers. In fact, the people who put together the Holocaust came up with their own plans for killing Jews that they hoped would impress Hitler (Niewyk, 27). I learned that Hitler was not a very involved leader when it came to the daily running of the government. It surprised me to learn that he did not give specific orders, but instead made his wishes known and the rewarded people for following through. From this book, I learned that the most horrible crime in the 20th Century was committed by ordinary people trying to gain status with Hitler and his Nazi leadership. 275 words HIST 101
  • 7. Library Assignment #3 Using the college’s library or a scholarly on-line source, please select one of the following topics to research. These topics are all something that we covered in class or are mentioned in the assigned class readings. After locating a useful book/article--and remember that “.edu” and “.gov” sites are the most reputable places to research--your assignment is to write a 300-word review (double spaced Times New Roman 12 font) about the research you found. In the first paragraph, explain the topic you selected. Just write four of five sentences introducing the topic and sharing what you know about the topic from our lectures or the assigned readings. That would be paragraph number one. In paragraph two, please share something new that you learned about the topic from your research. That would also be four or five sentences in which you work to connect what we studied with something that you discovered. I have posted a full/complete example of what I think a good library assignment document looks like on Blackboard. Please feel free to copy the style and structure closely. PLEASE DO NOT USE WIKIPEDIA AS YOUR SOURCE! IT WILL RESULT IN AUTOMATIC POINT DEDUCTIONS. Also remember: you will assemble/collect your library assignments over the course of the next two months. You DO NOT hand them in weekly although I am happy to look them over for you when we go to the library. My suggestion is that save them on a disc or print them out and place them in a folder. The assignments are due, all together, during the last week of class as noted in the class syllabus. • 8. file) Assessment 3: Community Website Overview Having identified the needs and challenges facing a community of your choice (Assessment 2), create a website that meets those needs and helps to alleviate those challenges. In the proces of creating your website, consider: - Presenting your rationale for how your website tackles particular needs in your given community. Explain also how your website will help your community achieve their goals. You might consider having an introductory page, or 'manifesto' that explains this rationale. - The way your website communicates information to your community and on its behalf (ie., the intellectual 'pitch', the tone, the language you use to convey ideas, specific terminology used in the community. - The types of information that are useful to your chosen communty. Knowledge is power, so what sort of knowledge will you include to establish positive power relations? - Ethical considerations such as what topics is is appropriate to discuss, or not, and what images it is acceptable to use. - Links to organisations and institutions that your chosen community could benefit from knowing more about. - Ways of empowering the identity of your chosen community. - Methods of interactive communication and education that can create an effective digital social space. - App technologies (many free in Wix) that can be used to meet community needs, and develop positive social changes. Â Assessment 2 and 3 are linked. Assessment 2 is the 'professional back-end' report that identifies the specific challenges faced by a particular community and identifies what that community needs in order to be supported/strengthened. Assessment 3 is a solution-oriented website where you will create an online resource to help tackle those needs. The results of your analysis in Assessment 2 should directly inform the online solutions you create in Assessment 3.
