2. D.F.A.W.’s History
1st edition created in 1978 by (former) librarian Gail
Ann Schlachter.
At this time more men and women were entering colleges and
universities than ever before.
Historically, men were much more successful at acquiring college
aid than women were.
Over the past 35 years the directory has been extended from 300
programs (in 1978) to 1,486 programs (in 2014).
3. What is D.F.A.W.?
A comprehensive resource that identifies and describes financial
aid programs primarily or exclusively for women.
Lists of funding that is open to women at any educational level, from
high school to post doctoral or professional.
Includes lists of funding that can be used for:
study,
travel,
research,
training,
career development,
innovative efforts.

Entries are in alphabetized within each section.
Entries are consecutively numbered to allow for easy findings from the
indexes.

Directory divided into 3 sections to allow one to search for programs
according to their educational level:
Undergraduates,
Graduates,
Professionals/post doctorates.
For example, if you are a graduate student looking for a financial
aid program, simply find the “Graduates” section (in the table of
contents).The top of each page will say “Graduate Students”.

Summery To provide financial assistance to women from
Tennessee or Texas preparing for a career in ministry at a
seminary in any state.
Eligibility This program is open to women from Tennessee or
Texas interested in entering the ministry; students enrolled at
Yale divinity school are also eligible. Applicants must be
preparing for full time ministry but not necessarily seeking
ordination. They must be planning to enroll fulltime in a
seminary in any state. There are no denominational
restrictions. Along with their application, they must submit an
essay describing their educational plans and how these
plans will help them reach their career goals. Financial need
is considered in the selection process.
Financial Data Stipends range from $500 to $2000 per year.
Funds are paid back to the recipient’s school and must be
used for tuition, fees, books, supplies, room, board, and
miscellaneous expenses.
Duration 1 year; recipients may reapply.

Gail Ann Schlachter
More than three decades in the library and information fields as a reference
librarian, library administrator, library educator, author of library-oriented
reference works, and (most recently) publisher of both print and electronic
materials.
Elected to the governing councils of the American Library Association and the
California Library Association, has served as the president of the American
Library Association's Reference and User Services Association (RUSA), and was
selected first as the reference review editor and then as the editor-in-chief of
Reference and User Services Quarterly, RUSA's official reference-oriented journal.
Former Vice President/ General Manager of ABC-CLIO
Gail established Reference Service Press (publishing company of D.F.A.W.) with
one goal in mind: to insure that those in need will be able to access the most
comprehensive and current financial aid information available.
