2. UConn is a government breeding
establishmentfor Morgan horses, and has
been since the 1950’s right after the second
world war.
There are currently two UConn studs on
campus. Animal science majors with a
concentration in equine studies work closely
with the breeding program.

4. UConn pigs are used primarily for meat and are
sold to local vendors forslaughter.

6. UConn cows are used for beef, milk, and
research purposes. Milk from the dairy cows is
turned into ice cream and served at the
UConn Dairy Bar.
Research cows are fistulated, meaning holes are
cut into their sides to allow students and
faculty to examine the animals’ digestive
tracts and study rumination.

9. Sheep are also used for research. A current
project is looking for a correlation between
ewe nutrition and the health of the lamb in
utero.

13. The UConn poultry unit contains multiple
varieties of chickens, whose eggs are used at
the dairy bar and sold to other vendors.
Breeds include the Rhode Island Red, Bard
Rock, Single Comb White Leghorn Laying
hens, and Buff Cochins.
