Susie has influenza A. She lives in a residence hall where there have been 3 reported cases. She also works in the recreation facility teaching several group fitness classes. Answer the following questions about influenza. 1)Identify the cause of influenza and the effects it has on the lungs? 2)What education should be provided to residents, coworkers, and members of the recreation facility regarding influenza? 3)At this point in the development of Susie’s illness is it safe to assume her roommates and coworkers have all been exposed to the influenza? 4)Should Susie be allowed to participate in Midwest Fit Fest, a large group fitness instructor conference this weekend? Why or why not? 5)What precautions can you take within your profession to limit your risk of infection? 6)Why do antibacterial drugs are not directly effective in the treatment of influenza. Solution 1) The cause of influenza infection is influenza A virus. The virus contains 8 fragments of segmented RNA. The viral coat contains glycoproteins neuraminidase and haemeagglutinin. The virus exhibit antigenic drift and shift by changing these surface glycoprotein structures. Influenza A virus causes flu with symptoms of high fever, chills, running nose, muscle and body pains and fatigue. The lungs are severly infected due to body immune action against the virus causing inflammation. Due to this, airways are obstructed and breathing becomes difficult. 2) Influenza is a contact disease and is spread by secretions, nasal droplets in air during sneezing and coughing and also by unhygenic contact of clothes and surfaces containing secretions. The coworkers and residents are educated to avoid contact of unhygenic surfaces and clothes. They need to maintain some distance with the patient and better to wear masks to avoid inhalation of droplets. The hands must be cleaned with handwash to maintain the hygiene. The floor and surfaces are cleaned with disinfectants. The room is exposed to sunlight. 3) It is not safe for the coworkers and roommates to get exposed to Susie\'s illness. This is because, the illness is highly communicable and spread rapidly leading to an endemic. 4) Susie is not allowed to participate in Midwest Fit Fest, a large group fitness instructor conference during the weekend. This is because, she is a potent carrier of viral organisms and may spread the disease to several others. So, to avoid spreading of disease she is not allowed to attend the conference. 5) To avoid the risk of spreading infection precautions are taken. The precautions include the wearing of mask, keeping covered when sneezing and coughing, keeping the surfaces , clothes and hands always clean. Keeping the room exposed to sunlight and ventilation. 6) Since, influenza is a viral infection, antibacterial drugs does not show their effect on infection and require antiviral agents to treat the infection..
