I will be very honest...
Before I met Kate, I really had no idea what show calling was...
I mistakenly thought it was just "Stand-by and in 3... 2... 1... Go!"
But as you will discover it is way more than that...
In this lively discussion, Kate spills the beans on exactly what a show caller does, how
they do it and some of the misconceptions about show calling.

Show Calling for Conferences and Events
With Kate Salberg
I had to step back in awe as Kate introduced her self...
She has more experience in her little finger than my whole career...
And yet with all that talent and experience, Kate is one of the
nicest and sweetest people I have spoken to for a long time...
In the 2nd part of the discussion, Kate share her tips and
stories about show calling.
As you will discover, Kate describes the show caller,
as the person who has an overall understanding and concept
of the whole event, which they glean from the producer and
they are the person who translates that information to the
crew, to turn, what has been a complete jumble of rehearsals,
into a seamless whole.
Not as easy as you may think!
And lastly, Kate shares with us another passion she has which is "Tell The Story Coaching"
This is a special project that you will surely want to know more about!

BEAM
BRUSH
Every now and then someone walks into your life and
they change it forever in some way...
This was true for me...
In 1991 I was introduced to a software called Pangolin
and from that day till now, I have never used any other
software to program lasers with...
With that, came an introduction to William Benner,
President and CTO of Pangolin Laser Software and a
30 year journey began...
Since then I have seen many changes to laser
programming software, but one thing laserists have
always wanted is to be able to do 'fill in!'
Until now, it has never been possible...
But let me introduce you to Beam Brush...
Finally we can paint with laser!
And it comes from Pangolin Laser Software...
William Benner is a world leader when it comes to
laser software...
He and his team have been the power behind
thousands of laser shows in hundreds of countries
around the world...
And Beam Brush started many years ago...
Let's Paint With Laser!
William Benner: "Well you know, it's interesting so
right around 1992, we had gone to the
International Planetarium Society...
... which is the home of Evans & Sutherland and
they have the Evans &Sutherland graphics
projector.
So they projected various graphics and things like
that.
One of the things that they can do was control the
beam diameter.
Like they can make stars bigger and smaller, as
they are in real life, they can and they had like the
rockets taking off... they can make the plume
behind the rocket and it was just like totally cool
and I saw this... I was really inspired and I said we
should be able to do this..."
"IT JUST A PRETTY
NEAT IMAGE
WITHOUT BEAM
BRUSH, BUT WITH
BEAM BRUSH... YOU
CAN'T EVEN BELIEVE
IT"
B E A M B R U S H - H O W T O
P A I N T W I T H L A S E R !
How did William Benner come up with the idea of
Beam Brush?
5 T H G E N E R A T I O N
It's small, it could be made inexpensively, it's super
fast.
We can make every single, every other point, in a
point oriented image, a different beam diameter.
This is incredibly fast.
It works with all colours.
As far as we know, there is no power handling
limitation to it, so it's just like pie in the skies, it's
like, of course you would want to do this.
C O N T I N U A L L Y V A R I A B L E
The great thing about Beam Brush is you can you
can make this continually variable...
...It will enforce that beam diameter on whatever
you put.
How do I get one and can I bring my laser to you
and you install Beam Brush into my laser?
How does it work?
William - "Well I'll tell you what... one of the things
that we've learned, since we brought this out... we
demonstrated it last November and then, since
then, we've done a lot of experiments with it, to try
to find out how easy it is going to be to retrofit this
into existing projectors and this is what we found.
So these days most laser projectors are diode
based and most diode based projectors don't just
have three diodes, not just a red, a green, and the
blue.
It's multiple reds you know, multiple greens,
multiple blues, right and so they combine these
things in a matrix like array.
Now what's interesting is, when you put this thing
through something that increases that beam
divergence, whether it's our safety scan lenses or
Beam Brush, what happens is, you start to see the
structure right.
Like when it's a nice small beam and you're
drawing things with it, you really can't see the
structure, but we if you expand it, all of a sudden
things start looking not so great, you know, it's like
"maybe I'm not so interested in this after all," and so
we work with Kvant in Slovakia, who produces
these lasers and what what they have done, is they
they have basically adjusted these arrays in their
lasers, so that when that when they expand it, it
stays pleasing.
Our initial approach is to work with Kvant, they
have created lasers that work with Beam Brush real
well, they build Beam Brush right into their
projectors and the easiest and best way is to just
buy a new Kvant projector, that has Beam Brush in
it.
"JUST FOR A
MOMENT THEY CAN
COME TO A SHOW
AND THEY FORGET
ALL THEIR
PROBLEMS, THEY
CAN JUST SIT THERE
AND SAY "WOW!""

IS YOUR
LASER SHOW
SAFE?
FIND OUT
WITH
ROBERTA!
Standing in the laser 'rain' as it
reflects off the mirror ball is
indeed a most entrancing
moment...
Another magical moment is
standing in the laser flat as it
scans from floor to ceiling...
Beautiful, but are they safe?
Laser safety is an incredibly
important.
If used incorrectly, there can be
great hazard...
As I extended my contacts
within the laser community, I
became aware that some new
nothing of these hazards...
Having been part of lasers since
1998I was aware of the hazard,
so I thought it would be good to
investigate...
And I went on a hunt...
I
I asked her, "what is it about laser
that makes it hazardous?"
This is what she said: "That term
radiation (The R in Laser) means
there’s a lot of energy focused into a
very small space in time.
So it delivers a great deal of energy.
Versus light bulb, where you have
photons just scattered everywhere,
laser light has is all concentrated, so
you can burn holes through things,
you can cut steel.
The laser wins, because again it’s
concentrated, also it depends on
what you’re hitting, if you’re hitting
the eye...
For instance, you not only do you
have a very highly concentrated
amount of energy, that’s entering
the eyeball, you’re entering a lens
which concentrates it even more,
just like magnifying glass.
Welcome To Roberta McHatton
Roberta has 25 years of experience with her
company Laser Safety Services as a Laser
Safety Office...
In other words.... An EXPERT!
DO NOT LOOK INTO
LASER WITH REMAINING EYE...
So a one milliwatt laser entering an
eyeball and it hits the lens just
right, in other words, it’s within the
diameter of the lens itself, the gain
has at 100,000 optical gain, it will
be 100 Watts on the back of the
retina!
Oh yeah, right, it can, it can cause
this very severe damage and
unfortunately the human eye was
never meant to have anything go to
that part of the eye.
The eye is extremely regenerative,
the cornea, cataracts can be
replaced, but nothing in nature,
usually affects the retina, or the
optical nerve and that’s the danger.
lasers are never meant to be
directly viewed...And then, of
course, you’ve got to deal with time,
as well as the amount of energy
being deposited.
Now a laser beam, it looks like a
pencil. Right? And it’s the same
diameter. No!
It actually does diverge and it does
and as it widens out the laser
becomes, you know, there’s
more more energy and a bit less
energy and a bigger area.
So, it spreads out the energy so as
to speak...
That’s, you know, that’s very
important concept to grasp.
That’s why, you can even do
audience scanning with a laser, in
this laser show industry, but
you really have to be careful about
how much power and how fast it’s
moving, or an amount
of exposure time you’re involved in,
but it does diverge.
Roberta and I talked for an hour
about audience scanning, as well
as laser safety for technicians,
Roberta is also part of ILDA and
pointed out the great work they
do in the area of laser safety.
We also discussed her book
which is incredibly brilliant and if
you are working with lasers you
should have a copy of "Laser

IT'S NOT HOW BIG YOUR LASER IS...
IT'S WHAT YOU DO WITH IT!
When I asked Roberta if all these
high power lasers were really
needed, this is what she said:
"Right, instead of one or two like
that was a big production, back in
the days...
To have three lasers...
Oh my god, that was a huge part of
the budget.
Well, now you can have 10 and you
can have 20 or you can have 314
Depending on what you want to do.
And that’s really quite effective
without bringing a lot more power
into it."
So maybe better to have more
lasers than more power!
I further asked Roberta: "What
else can laser operate to do to
make sure that, number 1, their
equipment is safe?"
"Well, they need to communicate
well with the production crew.
They need to be able to explain to
lighting designers and production
people, what they can do and what
they cannot do.
We’re seeing more and more
lighting designers now, step into
this...
I can only hope that they have take
the time to get the laser safety
training.
I’ve been having a big uptick in
lighting designers...."
So obviously they realise there’s a
need for it and I really encourage
them to, because this is
not typical of other kinds of
lighting, they really do need to be
savvy to what the concerns are.

Safety Course with Roberta, you

LASER ANIMATION
Laser Animation has long been a fascination
for many laserists for many years...
The fact that you can actually draw with light is
something that is amazing and unique...
So when I had the chance to talk with Pieterjan,
who is a professional laser animator, I jumped
at the chance.
In this (excuse the pun...) animated discussion,
Peterjan shares not only how he got started
working with laser, but also the tools he uses.
Starting while he was at school, he has turned
his passion into a full time career which has
allowed him to work with some of the greatest
talents in the laser world.
Being a digital animator rather than a paper
animator, Pieterjan uses programs such as 3D
Studio Max, Paint Tools, Adobe Flash and
others.
He is also an avid animatronics fan and you will
see how he combines both into his life.

Laser Harp – How To Play A Laser With Your Hands
The Laser Harp Still holds my fascination as it did when I first saw it in 1988
in London Docklands at a Jean Michel Jarre Concert on 8th & 9th October...
It was pouring with rain and freezing cold, but I was still one of the
thousands of screaming fans that went wild when Jarre, started playing the
laser harp. Remember in 1988, we had never seen anything like this before
and we were simply amazed.

How To Play A Laser With Your Hands...
I still didn’t know that 1 year later, I would actually own my 1st laser
ever and that in 1991 I would start my professional laser career
Over 30 years later, the laser harp is still very much a part of my life.
In the interview above you will see me talking with 3 amazing people,
namely: Laurent, Franck and Feera, from Laser Harp in France.
The laser harp was not invented by Jean Michel Jarre, however!
Bernard Szajner is actually credited with the first laser harp and he
started developing it in 1981 and he and Jarre contacted Bernard to
use it at the concerts.
The laser harp is actually a musical instrument. You will see in the
video interview that it is played by placing your hands in the laser
beams. Light sensitive photocells react to the beam interruption and
sends midi commands to the controlled to play the music.

Light Painting Cont...
Light painting is a technique that uses long exposure photography.
The artist ‘paints’ by moving a light source, while the camera shutter is open
for a long period of time.
It is also possible to move the camera if the light it static.
The light painting art form is nothing new.
It has actually been employed as an art since 1889 when Étienne-Jules Marey
and Georges Demeny, traced human motion in the first known light
painting Pathological Walk From in Front.
More recently light painting has become popular with artists as the
availability of DSLR cameras became easier.
Also mobile phone technology improved allowing long exposure and better
camera lenses as well as the availability of specialized apps.
Also light painting is relatively low in cost to get started as you can use
almost any light source to experiment with.
As a result of this interview, I am going to try my hand at some light painting.

How To Get A
Laser Variance
How To Get A
Laser Variance
For many years, I have been saying that only professionallly
recognized operators, should be allowed to use lasers.
I don't think the public should be allowed to due to the hazards.
I was recently asked for information about getting a variance and I
have to admit, I didn't know much about it.
so I went on an investigation and discovered what a variance actually
is and how it controls who has a laser.
With the help of Grant Kondourajian, from GKLighting, I began to
understand just what a variance does.
If you are based in the U.S and work with lasers, this is essential
information for you...
If you live outside the U.S there is a whole treasure trove of tips and
guidelines that you may want to implement.
Listen to the whole interview here <=====
How To Get A
Laser Variance
U.S law prohibits the use of lasers in excess of 5mw in public places.
A variance is given to an operator allowing them to project lasers
over 5mw in public places as long as they follow the safety
guidelines laid out by the FDA and CDRH.
It is a minefield of forms, however in this discussion, Grant no only
explains what can and can't be done with a variance, but also takes
us on a walk-through of all the forms...
And there are many!
Grant explains such details as who is the variance holder and who it
covers.
Freelance operators need to get their own variance.
Annual reports must be filed, product reports must be submitted...
It's all explained in the interview with Grant.
Listen to the whole interview here <=====
How To Get A
Laser Variance
Here are some of the questions I asked Grant...
What is a variance?
Do you need safety training to get a variance?
Who is the variance holder?
Who provides the equipment product report?
Does a 1 day event need a variance?
What happens when you sell, lease or loan a laser to a 3rd party?
What happens if you operate a laser in a public place without a
variance?
What happens if you don’t submit an annual report?

Part 4 - Control Measures Defined
Control measures are one of these 3 types:
- Administrative – which includes procedural
- Engineering
- PPE – Personal Protective Equipment
Which is these 3 do you think is considered the best, preferred
control measure?
If you guessed PPE – thinking that wearing safety eye wear or
clothing is surely the best protection from direct exposure to laser
beam…..
...you would be ….wrong.
It is actually the least preferred method for many reasons such as it relies on human
behavior to use it and may not be able to protect you.
For example eye protection – safety goggles – are not designed to withstand direct
exposure for longer than a few seconds (if not nano-seconds).
Class IV lasers can burn through the lens of the goggles.
Here is a diagram depicting order of preference for control measures:
Obviously, we do not want to eliminate lasers!
Then we would be out of business!
Substitution is a viable but not necessarily desirable option.
This would be video laser like effects we see these days on video walls.
Nice for what it is but most defiantly not the same as laser light itself.
Video laser effects are simply not as vivid.
Laser beams are the only lighting effect that reaches out over and hugs an audience.
In our application engineering control measures are by far the preferred control
measure. Laser projectors designed for entertainment purposes have many
engineering controls built in such as:
Protective Housing
Interlocks on Removable Housing
Remote Interlock Connector
Key Control
Fun Fact: An Estop is an
engineering control
measure…..right??
Sorry but no.
Why you may ask?
After all it is a mechanical
engineered thing….but, think
about it, an Estop requires a
human being to push the button
therefore it is actually a
procedural control measure.
Beam Block/Attenuator
Activation Warning Systems – from LED lights on projectors to activation
lights on entry doors
We discussed procedural control measures in our last article.
Let’s continue the discussion now.
Procedural control measures fall under administrative control measures. Aside from
the procedures you need to follow when setting up and zoning which included
informing crew and performers etc. these types of control measures start with the
laser show company who assigns a Laser Safety Officer (LSO).
The LSO establishes and implements a quality laser safety program that includes the
following:
- Provides laser safety training that covers these topics
- Bioeffects of laser radiation on eye and skin
- Relations of specular and diffuse reflection
- Non radiation hazards of lasers (such as electrical)
- Laser and laser system classification
- Control measures
- Overall management and employee responsibility
- Medical surveillance
- Nominal Hazard Zone (NHZ) Analysis
- Creates Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Provides and verifies labels and signage
- Assess facility/venue
- Provide procedural entryway safety controls
- Authorized Personnel
- Provide barriers – if/when applicable
- Provide when laser located away from operator a warning system
- Availability of eyewear
- Verify lasers projectors are checked after service
- Complete risk assessment and/or provide safety checklist or log sheet
- Report incidents/accidents
Keep In Mind operators are often performing duties of a Laser Safety Officer;
especially when setting up and zoning in a venue where the company LSO is not
present.
Operators are required to report via safety checklists that they have followed the
guidelines and mitigate all hazards such that the laser show shall not permit human
access to laser radiation in excess of the accessible emission limits of Class I and, if
applicable Class IIa, Class II or Class IIIa.
Ironically the company LSO may never actually operate lasers themselves!!!
Zoning: You need to think about where lasers will be located.
If on a stage, how high is the stage off the floor, how high is the ceiling of your venue.
Lasers must be at least 3 meters above the floor of your audience. If lasers are
mounted in audience area no person can be closer than 2.5 meters to laser units.
Think about raked audience such as in arenas and balconies where you will need to be
at least 3 meters above the last, highest row.
If you have balconies the laser company may consider terminating the balcony façade
as long as some security measures are taken to ensure audience cannot access beam
path.
Can the operator see the façade and balcony railing at all times?
Why is that important?
We must consider that an audience member might lean over and put their head in the
beam path - knowingly engaging in risky behavior; we must also consider what that an
audience member might reach over the balcony railing place a hand with highly
reflective jewelry on it or a mirrored surfaced purse that hangs in the beam path?
In either case it is the responsibility of the operator to prevent unexpected exposure!
Sometimes that might mean roping off seats (not usually desirable), or posting trained
security to stop unwanted behavior.
If the operator is located at FOH (front of house) the beam will be terminating over his
shoulder thus he will not have their eyes on the façade or balcony railing. In this case a
crew member needs to be assigned who has full view of beam path and access to a e-
stop in order to shutter the laser in timely fashion.
Performers and Crew - Performers cannot be exposed to radiation above Class I
limits if they must view the laser beam. Performers cannot be exposed to radiation
above Class II if they do not have to view the laser beam. That said performers can be
surrounded by lasers since the operator has, of course, informed them of the dangers
and told them to stay on their mark!
Fun Fact: The highest risk of exposure is not during a performance –
it is during zoning!!!!
By the time a performance is happening the venue has been assessed, crew is located
in places you know where they will be and performers are on their mark.
But during zoning crew can be randomly accessing catwalks, performers can wander
onto the stage, ushers can meander into the balcony area where lasers are being
projected.
Remember to do an announcement over the PA system prior to zoning!!!
What could possibly go wrong
when dancers have hand held
lasers?
Question - is there an
engineering solution for the
safety issue depicted in this
photo?

  • 6. I will be very honest... Before I met Kate, I really had no idea what show calling was... I mistakenly thought it was just "Stand-by and in 3... 2... 1... Go!" But as you will discover it is way more than that... In this lively discussion, Kate spills the beans on exactly what a show caller does, how they do it and some of the misconceptions about show calling. Listen in to Kate Here Show Calling for Conferences and Events With Kate Salberg
  • 7. I had to step back in awe as Kate introduced her self... She has more experience in her little finger than my whole career... And yet with all that talent and experience, Kate is one of the nicest and sweetest people I have spoken to for a long time... In the 2nd part of the discussion, Kate share her tips and stories about show calling. As you will discover, Kate describes the show caller, as the person who has an overall understanding and concept of the whole event, which they glean from the producer and they are the person who translates that information to the crew, to turn, what has been a complete jumble of rehearsals, into a seamless whole. Not as easy as you may think! And lastly, Kate shares with us another passion she has which is "Tell The Story Coaching" This is a special project that you will surely want to know more about! Listen in to Kate Here Show Calling for Conferences and Events With Kate Salberg
  • 8. BEAM BRUSH Every now and then someone walks into your life and they change it forever in some way... This was true for me... In 1991 I was introduced to a software called Pangolin and from that day till now, I have never used any other software to program lasers with... With that, came an introduction to William Benner, President and CTO of Pangolin Laser Software and a 30 year journey began... Since then I have seen many changes to laser programming software, but one thing laserists have always wanted is to be able to do 'fill in!' Until now, it has never been possible... But let me introduce you to Beam Brush... Finally we can paint with laser! And it comes from Pangolin Laser Software... William Benner is a world leader when it comes to laser software... He and his team have been the power behind thousands of laser shows in hundreds of countries around the world... And Beam Brush started many years ago... Let's Paint With Laser!
  • 9. William Benner: "Well you know, it's interesting so right around 1992, we had gone to the International Planetarium Society... ... which is the home of Evans & Sutherland and they have the Evans &Sutherland graphics projector. So they projected various graphics and things like that. One of the things that they can do was control the beam diameter. Like they can make stars bigger and smaller, as they are in real life, they can and they had like the rockets taking off... they can make the plume behind the rocket and it was just like totally cool and I saw this... I was really inspired and I said we should be able to do this..." "IT JUST A PRETTY NEAT IMAGE WITHOUT BEAM BRUSH, BUT WITH BEAM BRUSH... YOU CAN'T EVEN BELIEVE IT" B E A M B R U S H - H O W T O P A I N T W I T H L A S E R ! How did William Benner come up with the idea of Beam Brush? 5 T H G E N E R A T I O N It's small, it could be made inexpensively, it's super fast. We can make every single, every other point, in a point oriented image, a different beam diameter. This is incredibly fast. It works with all colours. As far as we know, there is no power handling limitation to it, so it's just like pie in the skies, it's like, of course you would want to do this. C O N T I N U A L L Y V A R I A B L E The great thing about Beam Brush is you can you can make this continually variable... ...It will enforce that beam diameter on whatever you put.
  • 10. How do I get one and can I bring my laser to you and you install Beam Brush into my laser? How does it work? William - "Well I'll tell you what... one of the things that we've learned, since we brought this out... we demonstrated it last November and then, since then, we've done a lot of experiments with it, to try to find out how easy it is going to be to retrofit this into existing projectors and this is what we found. So these days most laser projectors are diode based and most diode based projectors don't just have three diodes, not just a red, a green, and the blue. It's multiple reds you know, multiple greens, multiple blues, right and so they combine these things in a matrix like array. Now what's interesting is, when you put this thing through something that increases that beam divergence, whether it's our safety scan lenses or Beam Brush, what happens is, you start to see the structure right. Like when it's a nice small beam and you're drawing things with it, you really can't see the structure, but we if you expand it, all of a sudden things start looking not so great, you know, it's like "maybe I'm not so interested in this after all," and so we work with Kvant in Slovakia, who produces these lasers and what what they have done, is they they have basically adjusted these arrays in their lasers, so that when that when they expand it, it stays pleasing. Our initial approach is to work with Kvant, they have created lasers that work with Beam Brush real well, they build Beam Brush right into their projectors and the easiest and best way is to just buy a new Kvant projector, that has Beam Brush in it. "JUST FOR A MOMENT THEY CAN COME TO A SHOW AND THEY FORGET ALL THEIR PROBLEMS, THEY CAN JUST SIT THERE AND SAY "WOW!"" B E A M B R U S H - H O W T O P A I N T W I T H L A S E R ! • 11. IS YOUR LASER SHOW SAFE? FIND OUT WITH ROBERTA! Standing in the laser 'rain' as it reflects off the mirror ball is indeed a most entrancing moment... Another magical moment is standing in the laser flat as it scans from floor to ceiling... Beautiful, but are they safe? Laser safety is an incredibly important. If used incorrectly, there can be great hazard... As I extended my contacts within the laser community, I became aware that some new nothing of these hazards... Having been part of lasers since 1998I was aware of the hazard, so I thought it would be good to investigate... And I went on a hunt... I  I asked her, "what is it about laser that makes it hazardous?" This is what she said: "That term radiation (The R in Laser) means there’s a lot of energy focused into a very small space in time. So it delivers a great deal of energy. Versus light bulb, where you have photons just scattered everywhere, laser light has is all concentrated, so you can burn holes through things, you can cut steel. The laser wins, because again it’s concentrated, also it depends on what you’re hitting, if you’re hitting the eye... For instance, you not only do you have a very highly concentrated amount of energy, that’s entering the eyeball, you’re entering a lens which concentrates it even more, just like magnifying glass. Welcome To Roberta McHatton Roberta has 25 years of experience with her company Laser Safety Services as a Laser Safety Office... In other words.... An EXPERT!
  • 12. DO NOT LOOK INTO LASER WITH REMAINING EYE... So a one milliwatt laser entering an eyeball and it hits the lens just right, in other words, it’s within the diameter of the lens itself, the gain has at 100,000 optical gain, it will be 100 Watts on the back of the retina! Oh yeah, right, it can, it can cause this very severe damage and unfortunately the human eye was never meant to have anything go to that part of the eye. The eye is extremely regenerative, the cornea, cataracts can be replaced, but nothing in nature, usually affects the retina, or the optical nerve and that’s the danger. lasers are never meant to be directly viewed...And then, of course, you’ve got to deal with time, as well as the amount of energy being deposited. Now a laser beam, it looks like a pencil. Right? And it’s the same diameter. No! It actually does diverge and it does and as it widens out the laser becomes, you know, there’s more more energy and a bit less energy and a bigger area. So, it spreads out the energy so as to speak... That’s, you know, that’s very important concept to grasp. That’s why, you can even do audience scanning with a laser, in this laser show industry, but you really have to be careful about how much power and how fast it’s moving, or an amount of exposure time you’re involved in, but it does diverge. Roberta and I talked for an hour about audience scanning, as well as laser safety for technicians, Roberta is also part of ILDA and pointed out the great work they do in the area of laser safety. We also discussed her book which is incredibly brilliant and if you are working with lasers you should have a copy of "Laser Safety For The Light Show And Projection Industry" If you would like to have a Laser Safety Course with Roberta, you can contact here here at: roberta@lasersafetyservices.com To hear the whole interview click here Click To Get The Whole Interview?
  • 13. IT'S NOT HOW BIG YOUR LASER IS... IT'S WHAT YOU DO WITH IT! When I asked Roberta if all these high power lasers were really needed, this is what she said: "Right, instead of one or two like that was a big production, back in the days... To have three lasers... Oh my god, that was a huge part of the budget. Well, now you can have 10 and you can have 20 or you can have 314 Depending on what you want to do. And that’s really quite effective without bringing a lot more power into it." So maybe better to have more lasers than more power! I further asked Roberta: "What else can laser operate to do to make sure that, number 1, their equipment is safe?" "Well, they need to communicate well with the production crew. They need to be able to explain to lighting designers and production people, what they can do and what they cannot do. We’re seeing more and more lighting designers now, step into this... I can only hope that they have take the time to get the laser safety training. I’ve been having a big uptick in lighting designers...." So obviously they realise there’s a need for it and I really encourage them to, because this is not typical of other kinds of lighting, they really do need to be savvy to what the concerns are. If you would like to have a Laser Safety Course with Roberta, you can contact here here at: roberta@lasersafetyservices.com To hear the whole interview click here Click To Get The Whole Interview?

  • 38. Laser Harp How To Play A Laser With Your Hands... I still didn’t know that 1 year later, I would actually own my 1st laser ever and that in 1991 I would start my professional laser career Over 30 years later, the laser harp is still very much a part of my life. In the interview above you will see me talking with 3 amazing people, namely: Laurent, Franck and Feera, from Laser Harp in France. The laser harp was not invented by Jean Michel Jarre, however! Bernard Szajner is actually credited with the first laser harp and he started developing it in 1981 and he and Jarre contacted Bernard to use it at the concerts. The laser harp is actually a musical instrument. You will see in the video interview that it is played by placing your hands in the laser beams. Light sensitive photocells react to the beam interruption and sends midi commands to the controlled to play the music. Click Here To Watch The interview

  • 43. Light Painting Cont... Light painting is a technique that uses long exposure photography. The artist ‘paints’ by moving a light source, while the camera shutter is open for a long period of time. It is also possible to move the camera if the light it static. The light painting art form is nothing new. It has actually been employed as an art since 1889 when Étienne-Jules Marey and Georges Demeny, traced human motion in the first known light painting Pathological Walk From in Front. More recently light painting has become popular with artists as the availability of DSLR cameras became easier. Also mobile phone technology improved allowing long exposure and better camera lenses as well as the availability of specialized apps. Also light painting is relatively low in cost to get started as you can use almost any light source to experiment with. As a result of this interview, I am going to try my hand at some light painting. Light Painting

At a time when so many 'creative' companies chose to sadly close down, Eddy Sound, made a decision to shift from what they could no longer do, into something new. And Lighting Lab was born! Using empty space they turned it into a studio that can be used for in- house performances. Observing safety protocols, they changed the direction of the company with some amazing results. • 54. How To Get A Laser Variance
  • 55. How To Get A Laser Variance For many years, I have been saying that only professionallly recognized operators, should be allowed to use lasers. I don't think the public should be allowed to due to the hazards. I was recently asked for information about getting a variance and I have to admit, I didn't know much about it. so I went on an investigation and discovered what a variance actually is and how it controls who has a laser. With the help of Grant Kondourajian, from GKLighting, I began to understand just what a variance does. If you are based in the U.S and work with lasers, this is essential information for you... If you live outside the U.S there is a whole treasure trove of tips and guidelines that you may want to implement. Listen to the whole interview here <=====
  • 56. How To Get A Laser Variance U.S law prohibits the use of lasers in excess of 5mw in public places. A variance is given to an operator allowing them to project lasers over 5mw in public places as long as they follow the safety guidelines laid out by the FDA and CDRH. It is a minefield of forms, however in this discussion, Grant no only explains what can and can't be done with a variance, but also takes us on a walk-through of all the forms... And there are many! Grant explains such details as who is the variance holder and who it covers. Freelance operators need to get their own variance. Annual reports must be filed, product reports must be submitted... It's all explained in the interview with Grant. Listen to the whole interview here <=====
  • 57. How To Get A Laser Variance Here are some of the questions I asked Grant... What is a variance? Do you need safety training to get a variance? Who is the variance holder? Who provides the equipment product report? Does a 1 day event need a variance? What happens when you sell, lease or loan a laser to a 3rd party? What happens if you operate a laser in a public place without a variance? What happens if you don’t submit an annual report? Listen to the whole interview here <=====

  • 59. IS YOUR LASER SHOW SAFE? FIND OUT WITH ROBERTA! I  ENTERTAINMENT EVENT LASER SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS By Roberta L McHatton, LSO Owner/Consultant, Laser Safety Services LLC Email: roberta@lasersafetyservices.com Part 4 - Control Measures Defined Control measures are one of these 3 types: - Administrative – which includes procedural - Engineering - PPE – Personal Protective Equipment Which is these 3 do you think is considered the best, preferred control measure? If you guessed PPE – thinking that wearing safety eye wear or clothing is surely the best protection from direct exposure to laser beam….. ...you would be ….wrong.
  • 60. It is actually the least preferred method for many reasons such as it relies on human behavior to use it and may not be able to protect you. For example eye protection – safety goggles – are not designed to withstand direct exposure for longer than a few seconds (if not nano-seconds). Class IV lasers can burn through the lens of the goggles. Here is a diagram depicting order of preference for control measures: Obviously, we do not want to eliminate lasers!
  • 61. In our application engineering control measures are by far the preferred control measure. Laser projectors designed for entertainment purposes have many engineering controls built in such as: Protective Housing Interlocks on Removable Housing
  • 63. Fun Fact: An Estop is an engineering control measure…..right?? Sorry but no. Why you may ask? After all it is a mechanical engineered thing….but, think about it, an Estop requires a human being to push the button therefore it is actually a procedural control measure. Beam Block/Attenuator Activation Warning Systems – from LED lights on projectors to activation lights on entry doors
  • 64. We discussed procedural control measures in our last article. Let’s continue the discussion now. Procedural control measures fall under administrative control measures. Aside from the procedures you need to follow when setting up and zoning which included informing crew and performers etc. these types of control measures start with the laser show company who assigns a Laser Safety Officer (LSO). The LSO establishes and implements a quality laser safety program that includes the following: - Provides laser safety training that covers these topics - Bioeffects of laser radiation on eye and skin - Relations of specular and diffuse reflection - Non radiation hazards of lasers (such as electrical) - Laser and laser system classification - Control measures - Overall management and employee responsibility - Medical surveillance - Nominal Hazard Zone (NHZ) Analysis - Creates Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) - Provides and verifies labels and signage - Assess facility/venue - Provide procedural entryway safety controls - Authorized Personnel - Provide barriers – if/when applicable - Provide when laser located away from operator a warning system - Availability of eyewear - Verify lasers projectors are checked after service - Complete risk assessment and/or provide safety checklist or log sheet - Report incidents/accidents
  • 65. Keep In Mind operators are often performing duties of a Laser Safety Officer; especially when setting up and zoning in a venue where the company LSO is not present. Operators are required to report via safety checklists that they have followed the guidelines and mitigate all hazards such that the laser show shall not permit human access to laser radiation in excess of the accessible emission limits of Class I and, if applicable Class IIa, Class II or Class IIIa. Ironically the company LSO may never actually operate lasers themselves!!! Zoning: You need to think about where lasers will be located. If on a stage, how high is the stage off the floor, how high is the ceiling of your venue. Lasers must be at least 3 meters above the floor of your audience. If lasers are mounted in audience area no person can be closer than 2.5 meters to laser units. Think about raked audience such as in arenas and balconies where you will need to be at least 3 meters above the last, highest row. If you have balconies the laser company may consider terminating the balcony façade as long as some security measures are taken to ensure audience cannot access beam path. Can the operator see the façade and balcony railing at all times? Why is that important?
  • 66. We must consider that an audience member might lean over and put their head in the beam path - knowingly engaging in risky behavior; we must also consider what that an audience member might reach over the balcony railing place a hand with highly reflective jewelry on it or a mirrored surfaced purse that hangs in the beam path? In either case it is the responsibility of the operator to prevent unexpected exposure! Sometimes that might mean roping off seats (not usually desirable), or posting trained security to stop unwanted behavior. If the operator is located at FOH (front of house) the beam will be terminating over his shoulder thus he will not have their eyes on the façade or balcony railing. In this case a crew member needs to be assigned who has full view of beam path and access to a e- stop in order to shutter the laser in timely fashion. Performers and Crew - Performers cannot be exposed to radiation above Class I limits if they must view the laser beam. Performers cannot be exposed to radiation above Class II if they do not have to view the laser beam. That said performers can be surrounded by lasers since the operator has, of course, informed them of the dangers and told them to stay on their mark! Photo by http://www.talents-productions.com/the-laser-battle.html
  • 67. Fun Fact: The highest risk of exposure is not during a performance – it is during zoning!!!! By the time a performance is happening the venue has been assessed, crew is located in places you know where they will be and performers are on their mark. But during zoning crew can be randomly accessing catwalks, performers can wander onto the stage, ushers can meander into the balcony area where lasers are being projected. Remember to do an announcement over the PA system prior to zoning!!! What could possibly go wrong when dancers have hand held lasers? Question - is there an engineering solution for the safety issue depicted in this photo? Find out in our next article about laser safety as it applies to entertainment!
