This month we kick off with the amazing, the one and only Brandy Alexander...
Brandy is a laser dancer, very unique and sometimes controversial and someone who
caused a bit of a stir recently in a Facebook Group!
Welcome
Welcome to ArgonTV July Edition 2021!
For the more observant among you, you may have noticed
that there was no June edition of the ArgonTV magazine...
Apologies, however we had extreme personal challenges
and we had to give focus to them...
Everything is alright and we are back again!
We also take a quick look at the use of lasers in films with a list of my favorite 10...
I know there are many more than 10, but we had to limit how many pages we went haha!
And lastly, we have another installment about laser safety from Roberta McHatton...
We are very sure you will enjoy this edition...
And don't forget.... Always let your light shine!

8. Laser Dancers Awesome Secrets
That Are Unbelievably Exciting
Every now and then, someone really
amazing and dynamic walks into your
life...
And this happened to me when I met
Brandy Alexander to talk about her
career as a laser dancer recently on
ArgonTV.
Interview
I met Brandy because of the photo
here on the right...
The photo was posted in a Facebook
group about lasers and it got a few not
so nice comments...
Brandy was a little upset...
I sent her a message and we got
talking and she agreed to be a guest
on ArgonTV...
And boy and I glad she did!
Brandy is all about having fun and her
laser dancing is quite an art.
Her passion for lasers started way
back in the early 90's, when life was
just more fun!
Brandy soon became an international name working at Psytrans parties in Mexico...
And the rest, as they say is history!
9. Laser Dancers Awesome Secrets
That Are Unbelievably Exciting
Brandy now lives in Colorado where she has
converted her house into a UV dreamworld,
where just about every room has some UV
or lasers going on...
"I have two 10 watts and two 11 watt lasers,
that I own of my own and if I bring you over
here, I can show you.
Iâve got a controller, the APC 40 controller
and I run everything on Beyond." Brandy
shared with us.
One of the criticisms of the photo was some
people thought it wasn't safe...
However Brandy takes great care to follow
laser guidelines and even has her own
variance...
She actually also wears laser goggles to
protect her eyes and said "So they're
definitely working and I love my eyes.
I would never do something that that would put myself in harm's way."
Brandy is one of those people who just shifts when the shit hits the fan!
At the beginning of the pandemic, which pretty much destroyed businesses, she asked herself, "So
how can I be creative?
How can I⌠how can I still do something beautiful and amazing with these, you know, concert quality
lasers in my little tiny houseâ and thatâs when I started doing photography.
Setting up my lasers and taking pictures and taking pictures with them and dancing with them and
just trying to be as creative as I can, because not everybody has access to this kind of equipment."
You know, I mean itâs something thatâs really special and I didnât want to just waste it.

And So Laser Thumper was born...
Brandy clearly loves blacklight and lasers and the future looks exciting for her as she prepares to
relocate to Puerto Rica in the near future.
Do yourself a favor and listen in the Brandy and myself as we discuss her Laser Dancer World!
11. Lasers In Movies
Lasers in movies are nothing new and if you research you will find hundreds of movies with
lasers in them.
It really makes a movie better for me when I see a laser in it.
From a system flashing away in the background in a night club somewhere to James Bond
and more.
I compiled a list of 10 great scenes from laser that I think are awesome!
Do you have your favourite laser clip in a movie?

ENTERTAINMENT EVENT LASER SAFETY
CONSIDERATIONS

Part 10
Accidents/Incidents Continued
Last time we posed this question: What do you do if an accident
and/or incident happens?
Do you report it, if so how and who do you report to?
We all need to approach accidents or incidents as golden
opportunities from we which we can learn and improve our safety
program.
Not acknowledging when something goes wrong is not
appropriate or constructive. Instead, this is how we learn, improve
and share what we have learned with others.
23. Provides laser safety training that covers these topics
Bioeffects of laser radiation on eye and skin
Relations of specular and diffuse reflection
Non radiation hazards of lasers (such as electrical)
Laser and laser system classification
Control measures
Overall management and employee responsibility
Medical surveillance
Nominal Hazard Zone (NHZ) Analysis â In our industry this is often accomplished by training operators to
do this in the field.
Creates Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Provides and verifies labels and signage
Assess facility/venue â Again in our industry the LSO will train an operator to do this when LSO is not
present
Provide procedural entryway safety controls â this usually means signage and announcements for
entertainment applications
Authorized Personnel â Who is authorized to access to the lasers. Typically, anyone with a back stage
pass.
Provide barriers â if/when applicable
Provide a warning system when laser located away from the operator â usually a combination of
software and audio warning systems
Availability of eyewear
Verify lasers projectors are checked after service
Complete risk assessment and/or provide quality control safety checklist to verify safety components and
procedures are working properly and/or followed if procedural.
Report incidents/accidents
Remember we want to practice preventative safety not reactive safety.
In other words, we want to take corrective action before some is injured.
Corrective action prior to an injury is preventative whereas doing something after an injury is reactive safety.
A close call is an opportunity to prevent an injury in the future but not having a close call at all is our ultimate
goal.
Both incidents and/or accidents shall be reported to your company Laser Safety Officer.
You may recall from our 4th article we talked about LSOs.
A laser show company must assign a person to be the Laser Safety Officer (LSO).
The LSO establishes and implements a quality laser safety program that includes the following:
In addition the LSO provides the following:
24. Person reporting the concern: name, occupation, email address, company name, address,
telephone number
Laser Show Company who produced/manufactured the laser show effects: Company name,
address, laser projectors used (model, family, brand names), email, telephone numbers
Additional information about laser show company such as tour schedule, history, variance
information, state registration, quality control safety checklist available
Fun Fact: Note that Spectators are at greater risk than Operators!
As already stated, incidents and accidents should be immediately reported to the company LSO.
This means informing the Laser Safety Officer of what exactly happened that was a cause for
concern.
First and foremost, you need to access if there was an injury which identifies this occurrence as an
accident.
Remember that incidents are defined as an event that did not result in an injury.
This does not mean incidents should not be reported! If anything, an incident that did not result in
an injury is important to report in order to prevent an injury.
Here is the information that should be reported:
25. Description of Show such beams terminated onto walls, ceiling, or into audience
Location and time of Occurrence you are reporting: Date and time plus description of event such as
laser beams terminated onto a mirror (specular reflective surface) misdirecting beams into 10 and 11
row of audience on ground floor. Give number of people exposed, where they audience members or
crew, number of people adversely affected (such as eye injury), number of unexposed people attending
the performance (crowd size), number of potentially exposed people who did not exhibit adverse
reactions.
Type of event: death (not likely unless for example laser into windshield causes a vehicle to crash and kill
someone), serious injury (usually to the eye), malfunction of equipment, other such as clamp holding
laser to truss slipped
Additional description of nature and magnitude of exposure and/or injuries
Actions taken: Describe what actions were taken at the time of the occurrence
Such as e-stop was activated, people exposed did or did not receive medical attention.
Describe actions taken after the occurrence such as clamps replaced or lasers
no longer mounted on moving truss, or performers informed prior to laser activation
Whether you are an audience member or concerned crew member who saw something that you felt was a
laser safety concern I highly recommend your first step is to talk to the laser company first.
Let them know you that you are concerned about safe operation of lasers at an event, describe exactly what
your concern is, make any recommendations to mitigate the concern such as using a beam block, or
providing an e-stop or suggest they attend a laser safety class.
You may want to inform them that if they do not take corrective action you will feel obliged to report your
concern to appropriate authorities. This could mean that you contact ILDA â the International Laser Display
Association.
26. For general misuse, including laser light shows, see the ILDA page âReport unsafe laser light showsâ:
https://www.lasershowsafety.info/report.html.
This page has contact information for the U.S. agency that regulates laser use, the Food and Drug
Administration by submitting an ARO (Accidental Radiation Occurrence) report via this link:
https://www.fda.gov/downloads/AboutFDA/ReportsManualsForms/Forms/UCM236066.pdf
While FDA may not be able to do anything about a particular incident, your information will be useful in
gathering general information about laser misuse for enforcement and potential future regulations.
If you concern is related to airspace such as you observe lasers accidentally (unintentionally) projected into
airspace you should report your concern to the laser show company LSO.
You want to find out if the laser show company has âpermissionâ to put laser in the airspace (unterminated
beams) you can ask to see their letter of non-objection from the FAA.
If they cannot provide that and there is heavy air traffic over the area you may want to notify the FAA.
I would recommend using the FlightRadar24 app to determine if there is lot of air traffic over area you
projected into by accident to know if there is high air traffic or low amount of air traffic over area/airspace
lasers are aimed into.
You, as operator and/or the LSO should contact local aviation authorities to report the incident.
Even if you did not lase an aircraft you should report the incident.
This is all assuming you did not report to FAA and obtain a letter of non-objection.
Self-reporting may very well help you avoid a heavy fine and/or jail time!
Go to this FAA website to report lasers in airspace: https://www.faa.gov/aircraft/safety/report/laserinfo/
If you see a laser being used in an unsafe manner around aircraft or vehicles, notify local authorities first.
This is considered an urgent matter, so dial the emergency number (911 in the U.S.) of your local police
department.
Next time will discuss injuries and why there are actually very few reported laser injuries incurred at laser
light shows.
