Measuring IPv6 adoption through .sg domain names
1
16 Sept 2014
Mon Perez
Associate Consultant
Singapore Network Information Centre (SGNIC)
Goal
•To gather statistics on IPv6 address for all .sg domain names.
•To classify active IPv6 .sg website into industries
2
Process
•“dig” for AAAA records for .sg websites
•“dig” for AAAA records for their NS and MX
•“telnet” the ports of common services to check if it is active (e.g. telnet 80/443 to determine if website is available, etc.)
•manually classify active websites in to Industry (e.g. Professional/Business Services, Government, etc.)
•“grep” the country and netname of the WHOIS result of the addresses
3
Statistics
4
•Data as at July 2014 and for .sg domains only
•161,800 .sg domains checked
Statistics (cont.)
5
Observation:
- June 2012 : World IPv6 Launch Day – a 590% increase in .sg websites with IPv6 address
Statistics (cont.)
6
Observation:
-Gov’t required agencies to enable IPv6 for their websites from Sep 2012
Statistics (cont.)
7
Observation
-Majority of the websites are registered by SMEs (professional/business site) or for personal use (blog/under-construction). We believe that these websites are hosted in third-party/free service providers (e.g. Google Site) which have IPv6 enabled.
Statistics (cont.)
8
Where are the IPv6 website addresses located?
Who are the companies behind the IPv6 website addresses?
Observation:
-For IPv6 website addresses located in SG, most are enabled by Commercial and Gov’t entities
-Common service providers (e.g. Google services in AU) enabling IPv6 for their website services may account for the high distribution in particular countries.
Observations
•Company/Individual registrants seem to rely on hosting providers to enable IPv6 for their services.
•Service providers play a big role in the proliferation of IPv6 websites
–E.g. Google Services (blog, sites, email, etc.), Amazon, etc.
•Some local service providers have enabled IPv6 but not for all their services (e.g. IPv6 nameservers).
9
•World IPv6 Launch – Google enabled IPv6 on their services
–https://www.google.com/intl/en/ipv6/
•IPv6 adoption in other Countries
–https://www.vyncke.org/ipv6status/detailed.php?country=sg

  • 1. Measuring IPv6 adoption through .sg domain names 1 16 Sept 2014 Mon Perez Associate Consultant Singapore Network Information Centre (SGNIC)
  • 2. Goal •To gather statistics on IPv6 address for all .sg domain names. •To classify active IPv6 .sg website into industries 2
  • 3. Process •“dig” for AAAA records for .sg websites •“dig” for AAAA records for their NS and MX •“telnet” the ports of common services to check if it is active (e.g. telnet 80/443 to determine if website is available, etc.) •manually classify active websites in to Industry (e.g. Professional/Business Services, Government, etc.) •“grep” the country and netname of the WHOIS result of the addresses 3
  • 4. Statistics 4 •Data as at July 2014 and for .sg domains only •161,800 .sg domains checked
  • 5. Statistics (cont.) 5 Observation: - June 2012 : World IPv6 Launch Day – a 590% increase in .sg websites with IPv6 address
  • 6. Statistics (cont.) 6 Observation: -Gov’t required agencies to enable IPv6 for their websites from Sep 2012
  • 7. Statistics (cont.) 7 Observation -Majority of the websites are registered by SMEs (professional/business site) or for personal use (blog/under-construction). We believe that these websites are hosted in third-party/free service providers (e.g. Google Site) which have IPv6 enabled.
  • 8. Statistics (cont.) 8 Where are the IPv6 website addresses located? Who are the companies behind the IPv6 website addresses? Observation: -For IPv6 website addresses located in SG, most are enabled by Commercial and Gov’t entities -Common service providers (e.g. Google services in AU) enabling IPv6 for their website services may account for the high distribution in particular countries.
  • 9. Observations •Company/Individual registrants seem to rely on hosting providers to enable IPv6 for their services. •Service providers play a big role in the proliferation of IPv6 websites –E.g. Google Services (blog, sites, email, etc.), Amazon, etc. •Some local service providers have enabled IPv6 but not for all their services (e.g. IPv6 nameservers). 9
  • 10. •World IPv6 Launch – Google enabled IPv6 on their services –https://www.google.com/intl/en/ipv6/ •IPv6 adoption in other Countries –https://www.vyncke.org/ipv6status/detailed.php?country=sg 10 References
