3. Who is “Major Dhyan Chand” ?
• Major Dhyan Chand (29 August 1905 – 3 December 1979) was
an Indian hockey player widely regarded as the greatest hockey player
in the history of the sport.
• Dhyan Chand was born in Allahabad on August 29, 1905 in
a Rajput family.
• Dhyan Chand had two brothers – Mool Singh and Roop Singh
• Dhyanchand graduated from Victoria College, Gwalior in 1932
4. • Dhyan Singh used to practice a lot during the night after his duty hours, he used to wait for the moon to come out so that
the visibility in the field improved. He was hence called "Chand"
• He was known for his extraordinary goal-scoring feats, in addition to earning three Olympic gold medals, in 1928, 1932 and
1936,
• His influence extended beyond these victories, as India won the field hockey event in seven out of eight Olympics from
1928 to 1964.
• Known as The Wizard or The Magician of hockey for his superb ball control
5. • The National Sports Day in India is celebrated on 29 August, on the birth
anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand
• This day marks the birthday of Major Dhyan Chand Singh, the hockey
player who won gold medals in Olympics for India in the years 1928,
1932 and 1936.
• The main objective of National sports day is to spread the awareness of
the importance of sports and daily activities in every individual's life
• The most noted memorials for him is the Major Dhyan Chand Award ,the
highest award for lifetime achievement in sports and games in India.
• The Presedent of India gives various sports related awards such as Rajiv
Gandhi Khel Ratna, Dronacharya award, Arjuna award, Dhyan Chand Award

7. Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in Sports and Games
• The highest sporting honour of the Republic of India.
• The recipient(s) is/are selected for their spectacular and most outstanding
performance in the field of sports over a period of four years at the
international level
• The award comprises
• a medallion,
• a certificate
• a cash prize of ₹7.5 lakh
• The award is named after Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India who
served the office from 1984 to 1989.
8. Dronacharya Award for Outstanding Coaches in Sports and Games
• Civilian award for Outstanding Coaches in Sports and Games
• The award is named after Drona, often referred as "Dronacharya" or "Guru Drona", a character
from the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata of ancient India
• "outstanding and meritorious work on a consistent basis and enabled sportspersons to excel in
international events" over a period of four years.
• Two awards are designated for the lifetime contribution in coaching where the achievements in
producing "outstanding sportspersons" over a period of 20 years or more are considered.

9. Arjuna Awards
• Civilian award for outstanding individual achievements in National Sports
• Awarded by the President on 29th August
• To be eligible for the award, a sportsperson should not only have had good performance
consistently for the previous four years at the international level with excellence for the year for
which the award is recommended, but should also have shown qualities of leadership,
sportsmanship and a sense of discipline

10. Dhyan Chand Award for Lifetime Achievement in Sports and Games
• Lifetime Achievement sporting honour in India
• The award is named after Dhyan Chand (1905–79), an Indian field hockey player

their active sporting career and after retirement
