Discuss the conflicts between generations in immigrant families
The strong bond in the relationship of the new generation and their elder generation is a major factor in causing conflicts between the two generations. No matter how long the new generations have lived in the new land or how much he or she have assimilated in the new life, there is always a natural feeling present in every person to defend their ethnicity. The person who is born in an environment where there is a similar ethnicity population will always present the concept of kinship. However, although there is a strong relationship between the generations, it actually still causes conflicts in the immigrant’s lives. For example, in the article “ Iranian Women and Gender Relations in Los Angles “, the author shows that the Iranian parents usually try to sustain the Iranian culture in America, so they get their daughters married to a traditional Iranian guy who does not permit her job or anything. He adds that such these things are unacceptable for the Iranian women now. Which at the end the conflicts have caused increasing in divorce rate, (Tohidi. N.a). This clarify the effects of the strong kinship of the Iranian parents and their children because the Iranian daughters try to satisfy their parents and family by accepting a partner who is from the same race, while then it ended up with a divorce.
The effects of the strong kinship in the immigrants life was also presenting in the documentary film “ Kelly Loves Tony “. Kelly and Tony are both Asian American. Like most of the teenagers, they met each other and fell in love. Lately, Kelly got pregnant, and she had to move to her boyfriend’s family house. Tony and his family asked her to give up her college studies in order to stay in their house and be housewife as it is common in the Asian culture. Every time when Tony’s mother asked him to demand Kelly in order to do something, he did demand Kelly to do. She faced so many obstacles with Tony and his family such as taking care of eight kids, and because of these obstacles, it all reflected negatively in their life. There were so many conflicts during the film between Kelly and her boyfriend’s family.
Another major factor that causes conflicts between the generations is the assimilation that new generations have went through. Usually the new generations tend to assimilate to the American culture while the elder generations want to maintain the original culture, and this causes conflicts between them. Even if the relationships between both generations are strong, the new generation will naturally assimilate with the culture that they raised in, and the assimilating will present in their life. Things like that are not acceptable for the elder generations, and they will get angry from their children when they see them get embarrassed from their original culture. tells the story of a dynamic cultural situation which extends to the family, which we will now refer to as the Squire’s. This family interviewed is my neighbor and is comprised of a mother (Anna), father (John) and a young son (Tyler). Anna was born and raised in Trinidad and migrated to the USA when she was 21. John is Jamaican and migrated when he was 18. They met when Anna was 24 and not long after, they were married and the union produced four children - Blake (28), Zoe (24), Micah (21) and Tyler (09). Their children were all born and raised in the USA. The Squire’s depended a lot on Anna’s parents for assistance when it came to raising their children and it appeared as if the children were reprimanded more by their grandparents than their own parents. They were also taught respect and principles by their elders. The proverb: “It takes a whole village to raise a child”, is symbolic of this communal tradition. So, whereas some children are growing up in a one-parent household, the notion of single parents is not an issue for them because neighbors and extended family alike help with parenting.
I have lived beside the Squire’s, for the past 3 years and over the years it has been evident that culture, respect for the elders and learning is paramount; the belief that the elders have knowledge and wisdom gained through experience of life, is also important. Parental responsibility is supported by the extended family and oftentimes neighbors. Their extended family is very visible in their lives and it was a very happy time for them when Anna’s parents were even visiting for six months from Trinidad.
The tradition of sharing, especially food with friends and strangers alike is a classic example which characterizes
West
Indian
homes. This is typical of the Squire household, where they are always doing cook-outs, barbecues’ and inviting the neighbors to visit. For me, this was also very heart-warming, because being from similar culture, it was a welcoming change to have them as my neighbors. I was able to share very freely with them, visit them and they would feel free to leave their son with me to babysit when they felt the need to go out and unwind. They also had no problem with our family bathing, feeding or clothing him, not to mention reprimanding him.
This family is a strong Christian Family whose firm belief is in the notion that if a family prays together, they will stay together. They are very spiritual and believe that everything they have become is because of God’s will. They believe that God has led them to each other so they are a match that was made in heaven. They feel very bles.

they get their daughters married to a traditional Iranian guy who
does not permit her job or anything. He adds that such these
things are unacceptable for the Iranian women now. Which at
the end the conflicts have caused increasing in divorce rate,
(Tohidi. N.a). This clarify the effects of the strong kinship of
the Iranian parents and their children because the Iranian
daughters try to satisfy their parents and family by accepting a
partner who is from the same race, while then it ended up with a
divorce.
The effects of the strong kinship in the immigrants life was
also presenting in the documentary film “ Kelly Loves Tony “.
Kelly and Tony are both Asian American. Like most of the
teenagers, they met each other and fell in love. Lately, Kelly
got pregnant, and she had to move to her boyfriend’s family
house. Tony and his family asked her to give up her college
2. studies in order to stay in their house and be housewife as it is
common in the Asian culture. Every time when Tony’s mother
asked him to demand Kelly in order to do something, he did
demand Kelly to do. She faced so many obstacles with Tony and
his family such as taking care of eight kids, and because of
these obstacles, it all reflected negatively in their life. There
were so many conflicts during the film between Kelly and her
boyfriend’s family.
Another major factor that causes conflicts between the
generations is the assimilation that new generations have went
through. Usually the new generations tend to assimilate to the
American culture while the elder generations want to maintain
the original culture, and this causes conflicts between them.
Even if the relationships between both generations are strong,
the new generation will naturally assimilate with the culture
that they raised in, and the assimilating will present in their
life. Things like that are not acceptable for the elder
generations, and they will get angry from their children when
they see them get embarrassed from their original culture. In the
article “ Exposures children of immigrants”, Sruti Swaminathan
who is an Indian-American, says “Growing up, we ate
traditional Indian food for breakfast and dinner every day and I
would have had it for lunch, too, but unfortunately I was too
embarrassed to bring Indian food to school”, (Maucci, n.a).
Those new generations are not a result of a single culture.
We may see some of them wear khaki pajamas from the Asian
civilization and drink like Spanish culture or they are technical
as Japanese. Their personalities and behaviors are affected by
the mixing of two cultures. For instance, in the Arabian culture
the reasoning is not allowed, the children do not do the
reasoning but they accept the orders of parents. However,
whenever it comes to other civilizations, reasoning is something
casual, so an Arabian child who born in America may have the
reasoning ability, and he is unaware of the trend of Arabian’s
culture, (Maucci, n.a). When the fathers see some magazine
having biceps in it, the fathers are amazed now. For them it is a
3. crazy thing. They are suspicious about weekend activities of
children. Though the generation gaps are always there but when
it comes to immigrants generation then the gaps are evener
severe because there are generational gaps as well as the other
gaps like cultural gap. When children go to play games on
weekend or do combine study late night it is awkward for
parents. Now there is a trend to spend Friday with friends while
entertainment whereas in various old generations there is a
concept that Fridays are spent at home, as per family ritual.
Generations have had enough of boring Fridays with lot of
magazine surfing etc. no doubt rituals are followed by ancestors
and now immigrant nations do not understand these rituals
because this generation is not born in that ritual, (Lopez, n.a).
