1. The document is a project proposal submitted by Dr. Ankita Bali to her study center for approval to study creating awareness about the role of diet in common nutritional deficiency disorders in India.
2. The proposal focuses on 4 key nutritional disorders: PEM, xerophthalmia, anemia, and iodine deficiency disorders. Dr. Bali will create awareness through posters and flashcards at a district hospital in Ghaziabad, targeting patients aged 18-35 from lower-middle socioeconomic classes.
3. If approved, the study aims to assess current awareness levels and educate participants about inexpensive dietary measures to prevent and treat the 4 disorders.

3. SECTION B: PROJECT PROPOSAL
Brief resume of intended work
In a developing country like India, nutritional deficiency disorders are one of the
most important matters of concern in health care sector, and diet has a key role in
prevention and treatment of these disorders.
Also food has to be supplemented with nutrient supplements as diet itself does not
contain all the nutrients in high enough concentrations. This has to be done in
addition to treating the underlying cause (if any) like worm infestation.
Hence, I want to focus my study on analyzing and creating awareness about the
same in my study group.
I will be focusing my study on 4 of the most prevalent nutritional deficiency
disorders in India ie. PEM (Protein Energy Malnutrition), Xerophthalmia, Anaemia
and Iodine Deficiency Disorders.
The theme that I have selected for my study is Theme 1- Assessing Message,
Media and Methods as this theme would enable me to assess the current level of
awareness about the above topic in addition to creating awareness about the same.
Theory
Nutritional Deficiency Disorders
There are many nutritional deficiency disorders. But, I would be focusing my study
on 4 of the most common disorders. These are:
1. PEM (Protein Energy Malnutrition)-
a. Definition- PEM can be defined as a range of pathological conditions
arising from deficiency of protein and energy, and is commonly
associated with infections.
PEM is a condition characterized chiefly by the following two forms:
i. Marasmus- It is a condition characterized by very low body
weight for age, loss of subcutaneous fat and gross muscle
wasting.
ii. Kwashiorkor- It is a condition characterized by oedema and
very low body weight for age.
4. Symptoms of Marasmus and Kwashiorkor
a. Common Dietary Management- High energy food, ORS, high protein
diet, mineral and vitamin supplements and treatment of associated
pathological conditions.
2. Xerophthalmia-
a. Definition- Xerophthalmia refers to eye manifestations (like Night
blindness, Conjuctival xerosis, Bilot spots, Corneal xerosis and
Keratomalacia) arising due to Vitamin A deficiency.
b. Common Dietary Management- Prevention can be done by
consumption of foods rich in Vitamin A like green leafy vegetables.
Administration of Vitamin A periodically is also adopted by
government for children between ages of 1- 5 years.
3. Anaemia-
a. Definition- Anaemia is a nutritional disorder arising when
haemoglobin levels in blood fall below the normal levels.
b. Common Dietary Management- Prevention of anaemia can be done
by consumption of foods rich in Iron like green leafy vegetables and
groundnuts. In addition to this, fortification of food with iron and
consuming iron and folic acid tablets is also beneficial in managing
anaemia.
5. 2. Iodine Deficiency Disorders-
a. Definition- The term IDD includes a spectrum of disabling conditions
affecting the health of humans from life in the womb through
adulthood resulting from an inadequate dietary intake of iodine.
Disorders like Goitre, Hypothyroidism and Endemic cretinism are
included in IDD.
b. Common Dietary Management- Sufficient intake of iodine through
various methods like addition of iodine to salt, use of iodized oil ,
administration of tablets containing potassium and sodium iodide are
some of the methods used to manage IDD.
Theme Selected- Theme 1: Assessing message, media and methods
This theme includes study by presenting the message through selected forms like
posters, lectures or flash cards and assessing the responses they garner.
Methods and Materials
1. Population- The study would be conducted in district hospital OPD of
Ghaziabad.
2. Age- My target would be age group of 18-35 years as this age group
includes new couples raising or about to raise families. This would inculcate
in them the significance diet to prevent or treat nutrition deficiency diseases.
3. Sex- Both male and female
4. Socio economic Status- Lower- middle class
5. Study Technique- I would primarily focus on creating awareness through
methods like posters and flash cards as mentioned in Theme 1 above in the
indented study group. Also, my focus would be to create awareness about
inexpensive diet to combat the nutritional deficiency disorders.
6. SECTION C: APPROVAL OF PROJECT COUNSELOR
I certify that I have examined the project proposal submitted by the candidate
Dr. Ankita Bali and found it to be satisfactory.
