Sawhill Athletic Club (A)
Sawhill Athletic Club was an athletic facility in suburban
Scottsdale, Arizona. It was designed to provide a wide range of
athletic opportunities, including racquetball courts and exercise
facilities. The facilities were modern, and the staff focused on
providing high customer service. To provide flexibility to its
members, the club had a wide range of hours of operation. The
members were primarily families and young professionals who
lived in the area.
Membership at the club had been steady since it opened five
years ago. To monitor the club’s quality, members were often
asked to fill out satisfaction surveys. Most members liked the
club’s attention to customer satisfaction, but many complained
that the facilities did not have a good layout. They complained
of having to walk long distances from one location to another,
citing this as a significant inconvenience. Another complaint
was that all the departments were separated with high walls,
creating a “closed-in” feeling. A new athletic facility was going
to be opening in the area in the near future. The owners of
Sawhill thought that they had better listen to the requests of
their customers in order to remain competitive.
Improving the Layout
Lauren Nicole was hired to manage Sawhill and to offer any
recommendations for changing the layout of the facility. She
was told to be creative and use her knowledge of facility layout
design. She was even provided with a diagram of the facility
407408and averages of daily trips made by clients between each
of the departments in the facility.

1. Develop an ld score for the current layout. What problems
can you identify with the current layout?
2. Use trial and error to come up with a better layout that lowers
the ld score. Explain the departments you thought needed to be
in close proximity to one another.
3. Imagine an athletic facility such as Sawhill. What strategies
would you suggest for creating an open environment?

Case Questions
Interview
Tiffine C. Bourland
11/16/16
Part A
As an interviewer, I learned that it is of great essence to
identify the purpose of the interview before hand and frame the
questions that will enable you to obtain as much information as
possible about the intended topic from the interviewee. Failure
to frame your questions beforehand will make one run out of
ideas about the nature of questions that he or she should pose to
the interviewee while the interview is still going on.
Such a scenario would be very intimidating as the interviewee
may have the perception that you are simply wasting his or her
valuable time, which he or she would have spent doing some
other more productive work. In that regard, it is always
advisable to prepare all the questions that you consider as
necessary, depending on the purpose of your interview, well
before the interview date (Kvale & Brinkmann, 2009).
It is also necessary prior to getting to the interview,
to identify the opening techniques that you will put into use
while initiating the interviewing process. This is since the
opening technique applied gives the interviewee the first
impression about the interviewer and greatly affects his or her
willingness to not only participate within the interview but also
offer detailed responses to the posed questions (Kvale &
Brinkmann, 2009).
In that regard, it is necessary to make use of opening techniques
that will greatly assist in establishing vibrant rapport with the
interviewee. Examples of ideal opening techniques include
offering the interviewee warm greetings, giving him a brief
introduction about yourself, as well as, making known to him
the purpose of conducting the interviewing. Most of all, it is
necessary to appear composed and systematic for the
interviewee to consider you as professional.
It should also be noted that there are some things that do
not usually work out as anticipated during the interviewing
process. Opting to make use of opening techniques such as
indulging in a chit-chat about the weather or the current issues
in the political world may make the interviewee doubt whether
you have any important issues to talk about (Kvale &
Brinkmann, 2009). In addition, use of normalizing comments
such as “You got quite a pretty office” may make one sound
petty whereas other normalizing comments may considered as
demeaning. Putting into consideration that I realized that most
of the normalizing comments end up sounding unprofessional, it
is the only thing that I will avoid next time I conduct an
interview as all other things worked out well.
Part B
Concerning the Thinking Habits of the Mind, Heart, as
well as, Imagination, I got to learn various things from the
organizational leader that I interviewed. In the first place, I got
to learn that in life, learning is continuous hence one should
consider each experience as a chance to learn something new
(Costa & Kallick, 2008). In addition, it is necessary to practice
communicating effectively in a professional manner to not only
inform and influence but also promote interaction.
Furthermore, courageous actions assist in making well
supported decisions, as well as, acting within ambiguous
situations. In addition, one should make efforts to construct
meaning by obtaining, as well as, synthesizing difference
knowledge sources to enrich understanding. Besides, it is
necessary to collaborate with the objective of accomplishing a
common purpose through the integration of personal initiative
together with group cohesion (Costa & Kallick, 2008).

Target Corporation is an American retailer organization that is
currently among the largest organizations of the United States.
The organization offers a wide range of products to its
customers. These products among others include fashion
products, household's essentials, electronics, pet supplies and
home furnishing products. The organization attains its products
from many suppliers who specialize in their production. After
attaining those products, the next step is packaging them and
branding them, thus making them attain a brand of the
organization, and then utilizes its good network in the country
to distribute them. The organization, to begin with, obtains the
products from suppliers at extremely low prices. The suppliers
can supply at those prices due to the many factors involved in
the process like having a ready market and the advantage of
economies of scale. After obtaining the products, the next step
involves packaging them per the specified brands by the
organization. Target makes those products appear with the
brands that it has designed for them, and then involves in the
distribution stage for the purpose of delivery to the customers
(Target, 2016). The following flowchart clearly shows the
operations that take place in Target Corporation until the
customer obtains the products the organization offers.

JIT Analysis
Target organization has many people that contribute to its
success. The organization has made deals with many other
organizations, in which they all benefit mutually. A good
example is the Marimekko, a finishing design company and
converse, an athletic wear company. These deals and
agreements with the partners of the organization in business
ensure that the organization manages to maintain a sufficient
flow of products and cheap supplies. The organization has also
made deals with many fashion designers among which include
Lilly Pulitzer, Isaac Mizrahi, and Mossimo Giannulli. The
organization signed a deal that is regarded as exclusive with
food network in which an agreement was made for the
organization to sell VHS tapes. The experts that the
organization has hired, mainly the designers are the individuals
tasked with the responsibility of transforming the supplied
products to the fully branded and packaged products as shown
in the flow chart, which has the organization’s identity.
Facilities Analysis
Target Corporation operates within the United States and thus it
does not have any issues with major transportation costs to
other international markets. Within the United States, the
organization operates 38 main distribution centers, from where
it distributes its products. These distribution centers then ship
the products directly to the organizational stores. Within the
United States, the organization operates in 1792 locations. This
clearly shows that it has fully covered the United States market
completely and thus the customers obtain the organizational
products easily, which are within their reach. Target
organization utilizes technology in significantly many ways.
The organization to begin with recently suffered a data breach
and thus one of the main ways through which it utilizes
technology is to enhance security in most of its operations and
information. The organization also utilize technology in many
other ways within its operation. Most of its internal operations
are technology driven, including the activities of inventory
control (Wahba, 2016).

Sawhill Athletic Club (A) Sawhill Athletic Club was an athleti.docx

  • 1. Sawhill Athletic Club (A) Sawhill Athletic Club was an athletic facility in suburban Scottsdale, Arizona. It was designed to provide a wide range of athletic opportunities, including racquetball courts and exercise facilities. The facilities were modern, and the staff focused on providing high customer service. To provide flexibility to its members, the club had a wide range of hours of operation. The members were primarily families and young professionals who lived in the area. Membership at the club had been steady since it opened five years ago. To monitor the club’s quality, members were often asked to fill out satisfaction surveys. Most members liked the club’s attention to customer satisfaction, but many complained that the facilities did not have a good layout. They complained of having to walk long distances from one location to another, citing this as a significant inconvenience. Another complaint was that all the departments were separated with high walls, creating a “closed-in” feeling. A new athletic facility was going to be opening in the area in the near future. The owners of Sawhill thought that they had better listen to the requests of their customers in order to remain competitive. Improving the Layout Lauren Nicole was hired to manage Sawhill and to offer any recommendations for changing the layout of the facility. She was told to be creative and use her knowledge of facility layout design. She was even provided with a diagram of the facility 407408and averages of daily trips made by clients between each of the departments in the facility. Layout of Sawhill Athletic Club Lobby A

  • 8. Case Questions Interview Tiffine C. Bourland 11/16/16 Part A As an interviewer, I learned that it is of great essence to identify the purpose of the interview before hand and frame the questions that will enable you to obtain as much information as possible about the intended topic from the interviewee. Failure to frame your questions beforehand will make one run out of ideas about the nature of questions that he or she should pose to the interviewee while the interview is still going on. Such a scenario would be very intimidating as the interviewee may have the perception that you are simply wasting his or her valuable time, which he or she would have spent doing some other more productive work. In that regard, it is always advisable to prepare all the questions that you consider as necessary, depending on the purpose of your interview, well before the interview date (Kvale & Brinkmann, 2009). It is also necessary prior to getting to the interview, to identify the opening techniques that you will put into use while initiating the interviewing process. This is since the opening technique applied gives the interviewee the first impression about the interviewer and greatly affects his or her willingness to not only participate within the interview but also offer detailed responses to the posed questions (Kvale & Brinkmann, 2009).
  • 9. In that regard, it is necessary to make use of opening techniques that will greatly assist in establishing vibrant rapport with the interviewee. Examples of ideal opening techniques include offering the interviewee warm greetings, giving him a brief introduction about yourself, as well as, making known to him the purpose of conducting the interviewing. Most of all, it is necessary to appear composed and systematic for the interviewee to consider you as professional. It should also be noted that there are some things that do not usually work out as anticipated during the interviewing process. Opting to make use of opening techniques such as indulging in a chit-chat about the weather or the current issues in the political world may make the interviewee doubt whether you have any important issues to talk about (Kvale & Brinkmann, 2009). In addition, use of normalizing comments such as “You got quite a pretty office” may make one sound petty whereas other normalizing comments may considered as demeaning. Putting into consideration that I realized that most of the normalizing comments end up sounding unprofessional, it is the only thing that I will avoid next time I conduct an interview as all other things worked out well. Part B Concerning the Thinking Habits of the Mind, Heart, as well as, Imagination, I got to learn various things from the organizational leader that I interviewed. In the first place, I got to learn that in life, learning is continuous hence one should consider each experience as a chance to learn something new (Costa & Kallick, 2008). In addition, it is necessary to practice communicating effectively in a professional manner to not only inform and influence but also promote interaction. Furthermore, courageous actions assist in making well supported decisions, as well as, acting within ambiguous situations. In addition, one should make efforts to construct meaning by obtaining, as well as, synthesizing difference knowledge sources to enrich understanding. Besides, it is necessary to collaborate with the objective of accomplishing a
