7. A remarkable
sitcom: Fawlty Towers
Fawlty towers is an old British Sitcom from the late
70s. Last year, it was named as the "greatest ever
British TV sitcom" by a panel of comedy experts
compiled by the Radio Times.
The Sitcom is set in Fawlty Towers, a fictional hotel in
the seaside town of Torquay in South England. The
plots centre on the tense, rude owner Basil Fawlty,
his bossy wife Sybil, the sensible chambermaid Polly,
who often is the peacemaker, and the Spanish waiter,
Manuel, showing their attempts to run the hotel
amidst surreal situations and eccentric guests.
Manuel is one of the most famous characters of the
series. He is from Barcelona, and he always seems
confused, clumsy and stupid because of his
continuous misunderstandings with English. British
people found him hilarious and funny. Other people
think that the sitcom is very contemptuous and
almost racist with Spaniards… The first time the series
was released in Spain, Manuel was Italian, not
Spanish, in order to avoid the rejection of the
audience. The translation was so confusing that they
cancelled the emission after three chapters.
The first time I heard about this series was twenty
years ago, when I got my first job in Holland. I worked
in a factory surrounded by English and Irish people.
They used to call me Manuel because of my bad
English. I laughed, thinking it was an innocent
nickname. Later I had the chance to watch the sitcom
and I understood why they called me that; I found
that my colleagues had been a bit offensive to me,
but I took the joke in good part and of course, I have
enjoyed Fawlty Towers since then…
Fawlty Towers, created by the famous ex-Monty
Pythoon John Cleese (the tall man). Maybe you
will be able to recognize him as Sir Nicholas Nearly
headless in Harry Potter.
