The Duck Jumps Out Of The Pond Essay
11) Sergei Prokofiev was the composer for Peter and the Wolf, Op. 67: The Duck Jumps Out of the
Pond. The Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra preformed this composition with Ondrej Lenard as
their conductor.
00:00 The tempo at the beginning is fast with a medium low pitch,
00:06 Some drums are added into the back ground.
00:11 Seems like the bird, flute, comes in a little bit here
00:16 A crescendo starts here and the pitch also becomes higher.
00:22 This is the top of the crescendo and there is a very high pitch.
00:26 There is an abrupt ending. Having the piece have an abrupt ending lets the listener guess what
is going to happen next. This lets the listeners imagination come into play as they are listening and
having the story conveyed to them through the music.

00:23 The cat, clarinet, comes in.
00:27 The bird and the cat are being played at the same time for a short amount of time.
00:33 It seems like the bird is responding to the cat at this time.
00:37 The bird is playing down the scale like it is falling. This is being played until the end of the
composition. In real life normally cats and birds don't like one another. So one would expect to hear
some form of fight between the two during this piece. It doesn't seem like that happened though, at
least not until the very end when it sounded like the bird was falling out of the tree, possibly because
the cat swatted at the bird making the bird lose its balance, only the composer really knows what
happened there. The listener has to use their imagination.
14) The composer Sergei Prokofiev wrote the composition Peter and the Wolf, Op. 67: The Wolf
Prowls in Wait. The Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra and conductor Ondrej Lenard will be
preforming this piece.

The San Diego Symphony Hall
On the weekend of Friday, October 17, 2014, to Sunday, October 19, 2014, the San Diego
Symphony presented Van Cliburn Gold, a Jacobs Masterworks Concert of the 2014–15 Season. The
performance was held at the Jacobs Music Center's Copley Symphony Hall and featured works from
Ludwig Van Beethoven, Serge Prokofiev, and Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The conductor for the
performance was Jahja Ling, and Vadym Kholodenko performed on the piano (Bromberger, 2014, p.
13). Born approximately on December 16, 1770, in Bonn, located in the Electorate of Cologne, a
principality of the Holy Roman Empire, Ludwig Van Beethoven was a composer and pianist, and is
arguably the greatest composer of all time. Uncertain of his exact birthdate, based on his ... Show

Musical studies included the violin and clavier, as well as additional lessons from organists around
Bonn. His first public recital was on March 26, 1778, at the age of 7, but unfortunately, though he
played impressively, Beethoven received no press or recognition at the time (Biography.com). He
attended the Latin grade school Tirocinium, but in 1781, at the age of 10, Beethoven withdrew from
the school to study full–time under the Court Organist, Christian Gottlob Neefe. Under Neefe's
instruction, Beethoven was introduced to Johann Sebastian Bach. At the age of 12, Beethoven
published his first composition, piano variations based on a theme by composer and music theorist
Gallus Dressler. Beethoven was later officially appointed as Assistant Court Organist, and in 1787,
the court sent him to study with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Vienna, Austria. During his audition,
Mozart commented on the young Beethoven's performance, "Keep your eyes on him; some day he
will give the world something to talk about." But his time under Mozart's tutelage was cut short
when Beethoven returned only a few weeks later to Bonn after learning that his mother was
desperately ill. Her death a few months later sent Beethoven into a fit of depression that would last
for years (Biography.com). The composition titled Cantata on the Death of Emperor Joseph II and
created by Beethoven in remembrance of the death of the Holy Roman Emperor in

Concert Report On Symphony Orchestra

My daughter and I attend the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra's November Masterworks symphony
conducted by Stuart Malina on November 13, 2016 at The Forum. I never attended a symphony
before, so I was nervous about what we should wear and if we could find are seat. I expected the
audience to be in their best clothes. The men in tuxedos with top hats on and the women in lavishing
gowns with pearl necklace. My experience sure enough prove me wrong in many ways than one.
The symphony started at three pm so I thought if we left the house by 2:30 we should be able to
have a good parking spot since not a lot of people go to symphony. Well, I was totally wrong it took
me about 15 minute to find a parking spot that was 6 blocks away from ... Show more content on

We were not seating in good enough seats to see the entire orchestra so my daughter and I decide to
listen for the instruments that were playing. We came up with violins, flutes, bassoon's, horns,

the everyone was finish with Requiem op. 48 the conductor bow and so did the soloist then walk off
the stage. Only to return to the stage to bow again but this time Ashley Milanese got beautiful rose.
Then there was an intermission. Where children could get their own conductor wand and pretend to

Classical Music Module 4
Module 4 – Music of the Classical Period
Unit Summary
(20 points)
1. Name two important visual artists (not musicians) from the Classical Period. (1 point)
Jean–Honoré Fragonard
Jacques–Louis David
2. Name two important writers of literature (not musicians) from the Classical Period. ( 1 point)
Voltaire
Denis Diderot
Jane Austen
3. Discuss the political events and sociological factors that made the Classical Period such a time of
violent upheaval. (1 point)
The years 1750 to 1820 were characterized by the Seven Years' War, the American and French
Revolutions, and the Napoleonic Wars. These political events coupled with the drastic social change
proven by the shift of power from the aristocracy and church to the middle class, ... Show more

The music was written for amateurs because composers wanted more control rather than trusting the
improviser.
5. What were the new developments in the classical orchestra? (1 point)
There were four groupings: Strings (1st violins, 2d violins, violas, cellos, double basses),
Woodwinds (2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons), Brass (2 French horns, 2 trumpets), and
Percussion (2 timpani).
A Classical Orchestra has a larger number of musicians.
Classical composers exploited the individual tone colors of orchestral instruments. A classical piece
has greater variety–and more rapid changes–of tone color. A theme might begin in the full orchestra,
shift to the strings, and then continue in the woodwinds.
The strings were the most important; first violins had the melody, along with clarinet melodic solos,
while the lower strings accompanied. The brass filled out the harmony, but did not play the main
melody. Timpani were used for rhythmic bite and emphasis.
6. Name and describe each of the movements in the standard four–movement pattern in classical
forms? (2 points)
Fast movement: The opening movement is usually in sonata form and stresses an exciting
development of short motives. It is vigorous and dramatic.
Slow movement: The second movement, not usually in the tonic key, is either in sonata form, A B A
form, or theme–and –variations form. It is lyrical and slow.
Dance–related movement: The third movement is

The First of Its Kind, Act One: Youtube Symphony...
The name of this work is Act One: Youtube Symphony Orchestra @ Carnegie Hall. It lasts for about
one hour. This is the first symphony orchestra of its kind. Many things set it apart from all others.
Approximately three thousand people from all corners of the globe sent in video tape auditions of
their musical talents. From this a total of ninety six people were chosen by " Youtubers". The
orchestra consists of both male and female musicians. The attire is all black and formal, such as
dresses, suits, etcetera. From certain angles, one can see that the music hall is packed with people.
The dim lighting gave great and appropriate ambiance. At 0:46 they introduce the first
orator/conductor by the name of Michael Tielsson Thomas. Everyone applauds him. He explains
what the audience will be in for for the evening. Then, clips of some of the orchestra members
appear on the wall via projection. At 07:15 the orchestra then begins to play Allegro giocoso from
Symphony No.4 in E minor, Op. 98 by Johannes Brahms from the Baroque Period. It was written in
Austria by 1880s. The symphony is scored for two flutes (one doubling on piccolo), two oboes, two
clarinets, two bassoons, contrabassoon, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, timpani, triangle
and strings. They finish at around 13:35. The members of the orchestra stood and received a
standing ovation. Around 16:00, Thomas says that the composer of the next piece is Lou Harrison.

Charles Ives Symphony 4 Analysis
Charles Ives composed the Symphony No. 4 between 1910 and the mid–1920s. The symphony is
unique because it applies a multi–layered complexity, which requires two conductors to synchronize
performance due to its huge, varied, and different orchestration. The symphony is composed of 4
different movements, which are Prelude (Maestoso), Comedy (Allegretto), Fugue (Andante
moderato con moto), and, lastly, the Finale (Very Slowly–Largo Maestoso). All four symphonies
combined take 30 minutes to play. In this assignment, I will discuss on the Finale: Very Slowly–
Largo Maestoso, which duration is roughly 10 minutes. According to my analysis, it consists of an
estimate of 13 layers of musical events, marked by varying musical tones and rhythms, introduction
of different orchestral instruments, and changes in musical intensity. Below is my analysis divided
into sections according to the track time and variations of the orchestral events. Section 1 (00:00–
01:04): The symphony begins with intense background soundtrack along with marching drumbeats.
Section 2 (01:04–01:14): The intense soundtrack is brought to the foreground. It has a nostalgic
tone, and the marching drumbeats continue to play. Section 3 (01:14–01:23): A high–pitched
soundtrack is introduced to the symphony, which then softens and tones down. The marching
drumbeats cease playing. Section 4 (01:23–01:58): The high–pitched soundtrack continues playing
alongside the nostalgic soundtrack in a synchronized manner. The piano is also introduced then it
dies abruptly. Section 5 (01:59–02:45): The piano and violin play softly in the foreground in
synchronized harmony. Section 6 (02:45–02:46): There is a slight pause in the music where all the
musical instruments cease playing. Section 5 (02:46–03:02): There is a repeat in the slow rhythm of
the violin and the piano. Section 4 (03:02–03:06): There is an abruptly increased pitch in violin
creating a nostalgic mood before toning down to the slow violin and piano rhythm. This is slightly
similar to the above section 4 at time 01:23. Section 5 (03:06–03:34): Piano and violin again play in
a slow rhythm. Section 7 (03:34–03:53): The pitch of the musical instruments increase leading to a
higher tone that creates

Gustav Mahler And His Fifth Symphony
Gustav Mahler and His 5th Symphony By the end of the 20th century, Gustav Mahler had
established himself as one of the most loved and frequently performed symphonists of the modern
era. Audiences enjoyed his work for the energy and emotion conveyed through each and every
performance of his symphonies. Due to his particularly rich and provocative writing style, Mahler
has become the influence of composers since his death and continues to remain at the forefront of
modern musical symphonic consideration. According to modern records, Mahler was born July 7,
1860 in a small village in Bohemia. However, some scholars suggest that he and his family actually
celebrated his birthday on the 1st of July each year (Stefan 9). He was of Jewish descent and the
second of his parents' fourteen children, although more than half of his siblings did not survive
infancy (Stefan 9). Mahler's Jewish heritage would later become a hindrance to his career due to
politics of his given region. Nevertheless, Mahler grew up under his father, who ran a local
business, and had a nurturing family life (Stefan 12). Like many other great composers of the past,
Gustav Mahler was a fantastic musician even as a child. He began his musical endeavors at the age
of four but discovered the piano later at age six. He was skilled to the point that he acquired a
student of his own before he turned eight. He made a flattering wage of one cent an hour during this
period of his "career" (Stefan 12). The lessons did

Based on the secondary research, the change of demographic structure has a significant effect on the
orchestral marketing. Millennials, who are typically defined as those who born between the 1980s
and early 2000s, outnumber baby boomers. Since millennials were raised and grow in a different
social, cultural and economic environment, they think and behave differently from the older
generation. One of the key traits for this new generation is that they pursue personalization. In other
words, this group prefers new things instead of antiques. On the other hand, millennials are born in a

Combining classical music with Shakespeare's famous play, HPO reaches out more young audience
who can have more understanding of classical music while watching the drama. Also, it helps to
increase ticket sales. Following this trend, we believe that Victoria Symphony could make an
integration between classical music and drama.

Ludwig Van Beethoven Essay
German composer and pianist, Ludwig van Beethoven, was born December 1770 and spent most of
his life in Vienna, Austria. His first teacher was his alcoholic father, who worked as a musician at
the Court of Bonn. Teaching him day and night, Ludwig suffered from his father's harsh and erratic
behavior. For a time, he and his father played at the Church. As his father's alcoholism increased,
Ludwig became the main musician. Beethoven's talents were discovered at an early age, and he was
sent to Vienna to study under different teachers including Mozart and Hayden. There, Beethoven

mood. His masterpieces depicted struggle followed by triumph. Later, his worked was influence by
the ideals of Enlightenment, leading him to dedicate the symphony "Erotica" to Napoleon. The
symphony "Ode to Joy" was believed to be about the brotherhood of humanity. His works are

the greatest minds of humanity. His ambitious works made him prominent in the transition between
eras of Classical and Romantic music. Music had driven Beethoven's life from a small child to an
adult. It helped him overcome an alcoholic father, his mother's death, failed love, and provided a
means of support for his family. It carried him through personal crises including the loss of his

Ludwig van Beethoven was a great composer at his time. He was a German composer and born in a
big family whose interest and inclination is music. Though at the age of 20, he was already known
as a pianist and a composer with distinctive talent, it was at the age of 30 that Beethoven was
recognized as a talented pianist. In 1796, his life changed when he started to feel deafness. At first,
he was dismayed and become irritable so that he almost lost his hope but due to his strong
determination, he continued to compose music. He was able to create wonderful and well–loved
music even though he became totally deaf. Beethoven was the grandson of a musician of Flemish
origin named Lodewijk van Beethoven (1712–1773). Beethoven was named after his grandfather, as

Jupiter : Symphony No. 41
Jupiter
Symphony No. 41 is one of the last symphonies Mozart composed. Symphony No. 41 was the
largest and most complex of his symphonies. The symphony is regarded by many critics as one of
the greatest symphonies in classical music. The grand scale of the symphony along with the energy
of the piece are what the symphony is known for. It is believed that Mozart was never able to hear
this symphony because he passed before it could be performed. The work is nicknamed the Jupiter
Symphony. However, the nickname did not stem from Mozart. It comes from a German musician
Johann Peter Saloman. It received the nickname because of the emotional style of the piece that is
created from the giant instrumentation. It represents the roman god Jupiter and his great power. The
first movement of the symphony follows sonata form, but deviates from it by including more
modulations.
As the exposition begins the piece starts in C major. In the primary theme, there is a triplet motive
that is automatically established. In addition, the dotted rhythm of m. 3 is also motivic and used
through the entire movement. Mozart uses very contrasting dynamics in the first couple of
measures. The piece opens at forte, but then dies down to piano in m. 3 only to return to forte in m.
5. Mozart also uses silence at the beginning of the movement to emphasize how highly articulated
the movement is. As the primary theme continues to be established m.9 introduces a march like

1a. The first piece of the concert was Divertimento No. 2 in B–flat Major, K.137, by Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791). This Divertimento has 3 movements:
I. Andante
II. Allegro di molto
III. Allegro assai
The composer Mozart was born in Salzburg in the year 1756. Mozart grew up with the privilege of
having a musically influenced family. Mozart's father was a musician who worked as an assistant
concertmaster for the Salzburg court. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was one of the youngest
composers of all time; supposedly composing at the age of five. The symphony was composed in
the year 1772 in Salzburg, Austria. Mozart was 16 when he wrote this symphony as a part of an
opera. The opera was for the purpose of celebrating the succession of a new archbishop of Salzburg,

The first part of this symphony does have its enjoyable parts though. I did enjoy the introduction to

Even though the times have changed, many characteristics from the past still impact the world of art
today. Characteristics from the Baroque period, Classical period, and Romantic period have had
their share of impact on today's society. In order to fully develop an overall understanding of how
defining each of these eras are, one must expose themselves to the vastly varying eras' music, and
other art forms including paintings. First in chronological order of these three eras, is the Baroque
Era. The Baroque Era began roughly around the year 1600 and ended during the late 18th century.
Baroque is generally characterized as an era with eccentric redundancy and also an abundance of

Following the Baroque era was the Classical Era. Classical music often times represented complex
emotional feelings in the music. The classical era brought forth a few new styles of music
composition. One is known as symphony. Symphonies are normally multi movement works(10)
containing four movements therefore resulting in dramatically longer pieces than the preceding era.
Symphony orchestras contained the string instruments. To the strings were added wind instruments,
usually the oboe and bassoon and fairly frequently the flute. The clarinet was introduced and
gradually became a regular member of the orchestra. However, the brass section(11) was not yet
introduced. The only brass instrument that was normally included was the French horn. Trumpets,
along with the timpani or kettle drums, were used only for reinforcing volume or rhythm. Another
form that developed from this era was sonata form(12) which was structured through binary
form(13). The classical suite(14) also was derived from this era. Variety of melodies, rhythms and
dynamics using crescendo, diminuendo and sforzando(15) were more commonplace in the Classical
period than they had been in the Baroque.

The Characteristics Of Beethoven And The Emperor Symphony
The String Quartet was dedicated to Joseph Haydn, who was Beethoven's teacher
These characteristics of the "Hunt" Quartet are found in the Emperor concerto, especially in the 6/8
Finale, which uses solely triadic melodies based on the tonic and dominant chords exclusively
In some ways, Haydn, with his "Military Symphony and the great E–flat symphony no

The Emperor Concerto uses similar characteristics of the Military Symphony no

expectation, stops and rests to introduce the essential element of silence, and a turn to the minor to
foretell the forthcoming use of that mode to darken the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

In his early works, when Beethoven could hear the full range of frequencies, he made use of higher
notes in his compositions
As his hearing failed, he began to use the lower notes that he could hear more clearly
Works including the Moonlight Sonata, his only opera Fidelio and six symphonies were written
during this period
The high notes returned to his compositions towards the end of his life which suggests he was
hearing the works take shape in his imagination
E–flat Major, the key of the Emperor concerto, is closely related to its relative C minor, as they both
share three flats in the key signature
A lot of scholars have explored the heroism of C minor, however I would argue the fact that what
applies to C minor can also be said of E– flat

The young Peter would enter a ministry of Justice as a clerk in 1859 (Mason 1). Tchaikovsky stayed
there four years despite the long journey to Western Europe and increasing involvement in music. In
1863 he entered the conservatory where he took private teachings and focused all his energy to his
music and compositions. Three years later in 1866 he and his family had moved to Moscow with a
professorship of harmony at a new conservatory. Even by this time very little of his music had
pleased the conservative musical establishment or the more nationalist group. It was not until 1868
when his 1st Symphony had a good public reception when heard in Moscow. Not even a year later
Tchaikovsky wrote his first opera the Voyevada. He later used this piece in his next opera the
Oprichnik, which won some success at St. Petersburg in 1874. It was then that a critic named
Balakirev requested that he write a work on Romeo and Juliet, which would later be known as the
Fantasy Overture. This specific work was rewritten many times until it met the requirements of
Balakirev. This romantic piece is a symphony where each theme stood for a character in the drama.
It is these expressive themes that make his first works well defined. The symphony Romeo and
Juliet is a love song in sonata form. It is a Fantasy Overture and not a symphonic poem, because
Tchaikovsky makes no attempt to tell the story in order or in detail (Hanson 118). The piece opens

Analysis Of Sergei Prokofiev 's Symphony

Music 101
Sergei Prokofiev's Symphony No.1, Classical Symphony, a favorite to many, is a major piece of the
orchestral repertoire. The piece was composed from 1916 to 1917 and was in a new genre; neo–
classism. This new genre was due the reaction to the expressionism and the perceived formlessness
of the late–romantic music during the time period (Whittall). In fact, the Classical Symphony is one
of the earliest works of music using the aesthetic of the neo–classical movement, and it is possibly
the earliest symphony to do so (Green). Despite being written in the early 20th century during the
midst of the Russian revolution, Prokfiev stayed true to the important aspects of pre romantic
instrumentation and structural, harmonic, and melodic styles. As previously stated, the Classical
Symphony was written in the midst of the Russian Revolutions in 1917. These revolutions were the
cause of major turning points in Russian history and Prokofiev was stuck at the heart of it in
Petrograd, the current day Saint Petersburg. Trouble during this period would begin with "protests of
thousands", escalating with food fights and fires until tsar Nicholas was abdicated (Nice, 130).
During this chain of events, Prokofiev would find himself "taking refuge from time to time behind
projecting walls when the shooting became too intense" (Nice, 130). "Lenin's return, massive strikes
and the first of the Bolsheviks' attempts to seize power in July

Antonin Leopold Dvorak: A Fair For Music
Antonin Leopold Dvorak was born here on 8 September 1841 to Anna and Frantisek Dvorak, as the
first of nine children. The family ran a business in house number 12, a cottage that had an inn on the
ground floor. A fire broke out here in the summer of 1842 and the future composer was rescued by
his father who carried him out to safety. All of Antonin's predecessors were butchers or innkeepers,
thus it was automatically assumed that the first–born child would inherit the business. In addition to
the butcher's trade the Dvorak family line cultivated another talent: a flair for music. However,
music–making was merely regarded to brighten up the daily routine and to earn a little on the side.
But it wasn't long before everyone realized things would be different in Antonin's case. Throughout
his lifetime he would be regarded as a fantastic composer, whose works have greatly influenced the

The Seventh Symphony's Four Movements Of The Seventh Symphony
The Seventh Symphony has four movements:
I. Poco sostenuto – Vivace ( A major)
II. Allegretto (A minor)
III. Presto– Assai meno presto (trio) (F major)
IV. Allegro con brio (A major)
Some general characteristics of this symphony are: The turbulent joy and dynamism, rhythmic
audacity full of vigor and novelty, evolved and complex harmony, the emancipation of orchestral
timbres (especially the prominent role of wind instruments).
The first Movement: Poco sostenuto – Vivace (A major): It's in sonata form. A slow introduction of
large dimensions, precedes the first time, which fixes the luminous and rustic nature of the work.
There are contrasts of timbres and abrupt harmonic modulations. This movement have confusing
wave of ascending scales, with the usual preparatory character, from which emerges only a beautiful
melody of the oboe, a kind of slow march in "C major", which could be described as idyllic if the
virtue of rhythm did not exist. . The dominant tone is hammered repeatedly, first with equal
rhythmic values, then – almost standing out one note to the other, the jumping division of the
rhythm is in compound double.
Theme A of the sonata is rhythmically clear and is initially exposed by the flute, whereas theme B is
somewhat diffuse in its melodic profile. It is a structurally very complex movement.
2º. Movement: Allegretto. (A minor): This movement has extended lied form and variations. The
texture of this movement is homophonic and it have a simple and compound

00:40 Flute comes back in this time louder then before and then goes into a decrescendo.
00:49 The original volume comes back out of nowhere.
00:57 Multiple string instruments come in at this point.
01:00 The last note is quick and sharp with a high pitch. In this composition the listener is able to
tell that there is some form of interaction between the bird and the wolf since both of the
instruments that represent them are used. The listener can assume that the way the bird kept the wolf
distracted was by flying over him and trying to get the wolf to keep his attention on the bird.

Mahler Symphony 5 Analysis
Mahler Symphony 5
Putting together a performance of a Mahler symphony, with its massive forces length, always
requires tremendous resources. As such, it can be very disappointing when, investement in these
resources result in a subpar performance. Take for example Christoph Eschenbach's performance
with L'Orchestre de Paris in 2009, which is very underwhelming, especially when compared to
Gergiev's performance with the World Orchestra for Peace at the BBC proms in 2010, based on, the
technical skill exhibited, attention to details in the score, and interpretation of emotional content.
Eschenbach's recording is extremely problematic, simply due to technical issues, specifically,
having unified entrances and maintaining tempi. This comes through immediately in the first
movement. The first entrance after the trumpet solo (m. 13) sounds almost as if the brass are playing
a grace note to the cymbal crash. This is detrimental to the power of that chord. Immediately after
that, the beat 4 pick–ups are a mess. In comparison, in Gergiev's recording those opening chords are
riveting, and with the intensity of the unified beat 4 pick–ups, the audience almost can't help but be
glued to their seats in the presence of the overbearing orchestral sound this movement calls for.
Pick–ups continue to be a problem for Eschenbach throughout the first 3 movements. This results in
an uninteresting performance of the 1st and 3rd movements because much of the character is lost.

from the Romantic era. The orchestra was a large ensemble (1) containing various instruments that
contributed to the overall sound of the piece. Since the orchestra was a large ensemble, just like the

All of the members of the orchestra seemed to be attentive to the conductor, which is important
because every member of the orchestra needs to be aware of what is going to happen next in the
music. The brass and the string had sections in the music, where they were the most important parts.
Overall, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra performed well as a whole group. The second concert I
attended was performed by the Richardson Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra performed
"Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, BWV 582" by Bach, which is part of the Baroque era. The
string instruments of the orchestra performed with the hair of the bow, in other words, arco (7). By
using lots of motion or most commonly known as mosso (8), the orchestra increased the tension of
the piece. The orchestra played at a pretty fast tempo (9), probably allegro. The piece had a distinct
part where the harp played. The ensemble was large, in order to attain the full sound of the piece.
The instruments played in the orchestra did not comply with the typical orchestras of the Baroque
era because it did not have a distinct part where were the main instruments were the piano and the
bass, or more commonly known as basso continuo (10). Along with the use of basso continuo, the
orchestra used ornamentation by adding grace notes (11) throughout the piece. The Baroque era also
included the doctrine of affections (12), in which the Richardson Symphony Orchestra demonstrated

Felix Mendelssohn was a prolific composer who contributed much to the musical literature in spite
of his short life. Born into a wealthy family, the thorough education and opportunities he received
revealed his precocious talent. Between the ages of 11 and 15, the child prodigy composed 13 string

of the King of Prussia, music director of the Academy of Arts in Berlin. His establishment of the

including Moscheles, Schumann and Joseph Joachim, was momentous to the musical development
of Leipzig. During his engagement at the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, he adopted the novel idea
of the conductor as the interpreter and demanded precise obedience of the score. His example set the
pace for conductors throughout Europe and subsequently created a new branch in the art of music.
Furthermore, he helped codify the modern classical concert by programming complete movements
of large pieces sequentially rather than interspersing them with unrelated arias or chamber pieces.
Mendelssohn also played an important role in reviving forgotten works from the earlier centuries,
most notably directing the first performance of J. S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion since the
composer's death and rescuing him from obscurity. Even Schubert and Beethoven, amongst others,
are indebted to Mendelssohn for reintroducing their symphonies into the standard repertoire through

Short Summary Of Pyotr Tchaikovsky
Pyotr Tchaikovsky was one of the most loved composers in Russia. On May 7, 1840, in Votkinsk in
the Vyatka region of Russia, Tchaikovsky was born to a middle class family and was the second son
of Lieutenant Colonel Ilya Petrovich Tchaikovsky, chief mine inspector of the Kamsko–Votkinsk
mines and metallurgical. Not much is said about Tchaikovsky mother, but we do know that she,
Alexandra Andreyevna, was the second wife out of three, had an ear for music and played the piano,
she was able to speak two languages: French and German. The two had six children together and
one child from his previous marriage. At age four, Tchaikovsky composed his first piece "Our
Mama in Petersburg", his father was impressed by the small composition, but thought it was a
phase. In 1844, the education of the young Tchaikovsky and his siblings was put in the hands of
Fanny Dürbach, a twenty–two year old French Governess. She noticed that young Pyotr
Tchaikovsky had different qualities from his brothers and sisters, he did not care about his
appearance, but he was very affectionate and had a big heart. Fanny Dürbach claimed that young
Tchaikovsky would start tapping on the window pane, playing a tune he that would be trapped in his
head, she considered his obsession with music unhealthy. (Pg. 13. "Tchaikovsky", Weinstock.). In
1848, a friend Tchaikovsky father urged him to retire from government service and was promised

Introduction One of the most crucial composers throughout the transition of the classical era to the

This theme begins with a legato and lyrical style that contrasts the staccato style of the first theme.
The violins are used as an accompaniment of the melodic exchange between the flute and the oboe.
This exchange creates a back and forth movement between the two instruments. The melody begins
with a rising fourth which is a link to the first theme. The accompaniment plays staccato arpeggios
which gives a reminder of the last measure of the first theme. From measure 65, the use of
syncopation previously heard measures 57 to 58 gives rhythmic drive through this section. The
violins then take the lead and restate the theme with the flutes and oboes answering. Beethoven's use
of diminished chords, in measure 65, and adding emphasis using sforzando adds more the dramatic
nature of the passage. In measure 69, the strings have rising eighth notes with semitones. A few
measures later the flutes and oboes double the violins' rising eighth notes which again underlines the
importance of the rising semitone. This last until measure 77 as the second theme returns to a soft
ending as the lyrical phrases played by the violins, oboes, and flutes are now played by the cellos
and double basses. The codetta, or closing, begins at measure 88 and lasts until measure 110. This
section creates a conclusion by combining familiar elements from the first and second themes. In
measures 94 to 99, the strings have tremolos which gives a sensation of the music being at fast
rhythmic tempo and in measures 100 to 109 the woodwinds and horns have slurred phrases which
resembles the lyrical phrases played in the second

Mr. Fakhouri had also explained how this is one of his favorite pieces and just had to have his
orchestra perfect, as they did successfully.
After a minor wobble of the director stand, a few adjustments and giggles, Symphony No.1 in D
major began. The first movement started off with an eerie introduction, with the first two notes
morphing into a birdcall as well as main theme but a very magical sound. It made for a very
soothing, romantic time. Throughout the piece I felt as if it told a story as most music does, what I
came to believe it was a love story. The Allegro begins in the cello with the second Wayfarer song,
"Ging heut morgen Ubers Feld," (I Walked this Morning over the Field). With a light and happy
tone in the beginning as if two lovers had just met, this was the main theme of this movement.
Suddenly there was a deep, heavy part maybe one of despair in paradise but that only lasted for a
short period as it came to a victorious ending of happily ever after. (Kahn)
The second movement Scherzo, gave more of an elegant, royal ball sound. Where the women dress
in gowns and the men in tuxedos, while drinking wine and dancing the night away. This movement
has the rhythm of the Landler, an Australian folk dance. It conforms to the classic minuet and trio
form though Mahler takes the first section beyond the standard repeat structure. The first three notes
of the Scherzo and the Trio recall the birdcall theme from the first movement. If

Richard Georg Strauss was born June 11th, 1864, he was one of the leading German composers of
the late Romantic and early Modern eras. He is known for his operas such as Elektra, Die Frau one
Schatten, and Salome. The composition I am going to analyze from Richard Strauss is his "An
Alpine Symphony." An Alpine Symphony begins in low volume, leaving me with a feeling of
suspense. The instruments that commenced the piece was a fragment of the string section known as
the second violins. The string section completely joined in but became over taken by a fragment of
the brass section which was the trombones. The trombones played a long note, this theme reminds
me of a funeral because of how silent the musicians are playing their instruments. ... Show more

New instruments were introduced in this section, the instruments introduced are the timpani and the
crash cymbals. The timpani and crash cymbals are two members of the percussion section. The
timpani and crash cymbals brought back a sentimental value to me, making me feel happiness
because a few years ago, I learned how to play both instruments for the Knox Pride of Troy Band.
The two instruments bring in excitement, the crashing of the cymbals and the rumble of the timpani
are two loud figures, I believe this section represents the composers emotion when he was waking
up from a long night of sleep. Strauss probably felt an attachment to the day time because it is
possible that he did his best work during the day time. The xylophone was ultimately annexed
during this section as the final member of the percussion section. Like the previous section "Night",
the "light" section began to annex in the french horns, trombones, and string section. The strings
along with the timpani and trombone added a dramatic feeling making me feel warm inside because
of how clear and filled with emotion they played. The "light" section ends with an allegro
movement of the timpani, the woodwinds join in, and the trumpets are officially
Partlow III introduced to end the section. The section kept a high volume, it would never drop, it
would constantly rise piece by piece. One piece that did not effect me was the coda, because I was

The Message of Hate in Babi Yar Essay
The Message of Hate in Yevgeny Yevtushenko's Babi Yar
There are very few people in the world who are willing to go against the popular trends and do what
they feel in their hearts is correct. But Yevgeny Yevtushenko is one of those people. In his poem
Babi Yar, he tells the story of the modern persecution of the Jews, focusing on atrocities like those
of the massacre at Babi Yar and the pogroms at Beilostok, and also the general anti–Semitism that
killed men like Dreyfus and pervades the entire Russian people. The poem uses many literary
devices, such as graphic imagery and contrasts, while painting a very clear picture of the scenes of
pure horror.

He says that he too must be a Jew for he is afraid of what his people and his society have become.
Many years ago, in the "ancient days," it would not be such a shock to see the Jews enslaved in
Egypt or crucified as a means of torture and death, but even in modern times the same things are
going on–he still has the marks from where the nails pierced him. The author has used classical
examples of Jewish persecution which every one knows is gone in the physical sense, but show how
they still exist in the theoretical aspect, as the persecution is still occurring.
In the next three stanzas, the poem takes the standpoint of three figures whose stories are pertinent
examples of what Yevtushenko is trying to rely in this poem. First the voice of Dreyfus is used, and
the stanza describes how horribly and unfairly he was treated, and how the country and its leaders
turned their backs on him.
There are two important literary devices used in this section. First the author puts the word
"pettiness" on a line by itself. This is used as a declaration of what the author feels anti–Semitism is
based on. It is because of pettiness that Dreyfus was accused and further because of pettiness that he
was not pardoned when it was proven that he had not committed any crime. The next important
device is the description of ladies with their umbrellas. This is an image to the wealthy

composer whose radical music couldn't be separated from his radical life history. Hector was born in
the year 1803 in South Africa face, he learned to play guitar and flute during his childhood. He was
best known for his composition symphonies fantastic (Fauser 123–142). He left high school in the
year 1821 in Grenoble; his desire was then conquered by his parents who wanted him to become a
professional musician. At the age of 18, he was sent to school at Paris to study medicine and become
a doctor like the father. Berlioz really hated the course that he, later on, dropped out of medical

What he was known for musically Berlioz cemented his reputation in the year 1830 as a musical

Research Paper On Beethoven
Ludwig Van Beethoven was one of the most influential composers of his time. The decades around
the 1800's were years of many changes and Beethoven's new approach to music was something that
reflected that. "His symphonies, concertos, string quartets and piano sonatas are central to the
repertory of classical music." This essay will focus on the historical and theoretical aspects of the
third movement of Sonata Op. 28 No. 15. Beethoven's works are typically divided into three
different periods. During the first period, to 1802, Beethoven incorporated the musical language of
his time while developing his own unique compositional voice. During this time, he wrote six String
quartets, the first ten piano sonatas, the first three piano concertos and the first two symphonies. The
second period last until about 1816 and showcases his individualism more than ever before. During
this period, he wrote Symphonies Nos. 3–8, the last two piano concertos, the Violin Concerto, the
String Quartets Opp. 59, 74 and 95, and the Piano Sonatas through Op. 90. The third period is

measures 45–48, and a 2–bar cadence at the end of the section. The second A section (A2) is made
up of nine 4–bar phrases. A1 consists of a repeating theme that follows the chord progression I, ii6,
V7, 1 in measures 5–8 and then goes to V6, vi6, V7/V, V I in measures 13–17 and the repeats these
same progressions in measures 18–32 except measure 32 ends on the V chord instead of the 1 chord.
A2 continues in D with a different and less melodic theme in measures 33–49 before repeating to
the main theme in measures 50–70. This section crescendos and grows in

The Duck Jumps Out Of The Pond Essay

  • 1. The Duck Jumps Out Of The Pond Essay 11) Sergei Prokofiev was the composer for Peter and the Wolf, Op. 67: The Duck Jumps Out of the Pond. The Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra preformed this composition with Ondrej Lenard as their conductor. 00:00 The tempo at the beginning is fast with a medium low pitch, 00:06 Some drums are added into the back ground. 00:11 Seems like the bird, flute, comes in a little bit here 00:16 A crescendo starts here and the pitch also becomes higher. 00:22 This is the top of the crescendo and there is a very high pitch. 00:26 There is an abrupt ending. Having the piece have an abrupt ending lets the listener guess what is going to happen next. This lets the listeners imagination come into play as they are listening and having the story conveyed to them through the music. 12) Peter and the Wolf, Op. 67: The Wolf ... This is being played until the end of the composition. In real life normally cats and birds don't like one another. So one would expect to hear some form of fight between the two during this piece. It doesn't seem like that happened though, at least not until the very end when it sounded like the bird was falling out of the tree, possibly because the cat swatted at the bird making the bird lose its balance, only the composer really knows what happened there. The listener has to use their imagination. 14) The composer Sergei Prokofiev wrote the composition Peter and the Wolf, Op. 67: The Wolf Prowls in Wait. The Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra and conductor Ondrej Lenard will be preforming this piece. 00:00 Starts off with a low pitch. The San Diego Symphony Hall On the weekend of Friday, October 17, 2014, to Sunday, October 19, 2014, the San Diego Symphony presented Van Cliburn Gold, a Jacobs Masterworks Concert of the 2014–15 Season. The performance was held at the Jacobs Music Center's Copley Symphony Hall and featured works from Ludwig Van Beethoven, Serge Prokofiev, and Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The conductor for the performance was Jahja Ling, and Vadym Kholodenko performed on the piano (Bromberger, 2014, p. 13). Born approximately on December 16, 1770, in Bonn, located in the Electorate of Cologne, a principality of the Holy Roman Empire, Ludwig Van Beethoven was a composer and pianist, and is arguably the greatest composer of all time. His first public recital was on March 26, 1778, at the age of 7, but unfortunately, though he played impressively, Beethoven received no press or recognition at the time (Biography.com). He attended the Latin grade school Tirocinium, but in 1781, at the age of 10, Beethoven withdrew from the school to study full–time under the Court Organist, Christian Gottlob Neefe. Under Neefe's instruction, Beethoven was introduced to Johann Sebastian Bach. At the age of 12, Beethoven published his first composition, piano variations based on a theme by composer and music theorist Gallus Dressler. Beethoven was later officially appointed as Assistant Court Organist, and in 1787, the court sent him to study with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Vienna, Austria. During his audition, Mozart commented on the young Beethoven's performance, "Keep your eyes on him; some day he will give the world something to talk about." But his time under Mozart's tutelage was cut short when Beethoven returned only a few weeks later to Bonn after learning that his mother was desperately ill. Her death a few months later sent Beethoven into a fit of depression that would last for years (Biography.com). A Classical Orchestra has a larger number of musicians. Classical composers exploited the individual tone colors of orchestral instruments. A classical piece has greater variety–and more rapid changes–of tone color. A theme might begin in the full orchestra, shift to the strings, and then continue in the woodwinds. The strings were the most important; first violins had the melody, along with clarinet melodic solos, while the lower strings accompanied. The brass filled out the harmony, but did not play the main melody. Timpani were used for rhythmic bite and emphasis. 6. • 8. Charles Ives Symphony 4 Analysis Charles Ives composed the Symphony No. 4 between 1910 and the mid–1920s. The symphony is unique because it applies a multi–layered complexity, which requires two conductors to synchronize performance due to its huge, varied, and different orchestration. The symphony is composed of 4 different movements, which are Prelude (Maestoso), Comedy (Allegretto), Fugue (Andante moderato con moto), and, lastly, the Finale (Very Slowly–Largo Maestoso). All four symphonies combined take 30 minutes to play. In this assignment, I will discuss on the Finale: Very Slowly– Largo Maestoso, which duration is roughly 10 minutes. According to my analysis, it consists of an estimate of 13 layers of musical events, marked by varying musical tones and rhythms, introduction of different orchestral instruments, and changes in musical intensity. Below is my analysis divided into sections according to the track time and variations of the orchestral events. Section 1 (00:00– 01:04): The symphony begins with intense background soundtrack along with marching drumbeats. Section 2 (01:04–01:14): The intense soundtrack is brought to the foreground. It has a nostalgic tone, and the marching drumbeats continue to play. Section 3 (01:14–01:23): A high–pitched soundtrack is introduced to the symphony, which then softens and tones down. The marching drumbeats cease playing. Section 4 (01:23–01:58): The high–pitched soundtrack continues playing alongside the nostalgic soundtrack in a synchronized manner. The piano is also introduced then it dies abruptly. Section 5 (01:59–02:45): The piano and violin play softly in the foreground in synchronized harmony. Section 6 (02:45–02:46): There is a slight pause in the music where all the musical instruments cease playing. Section 5 (02:46–03:02): There is a repeat in the slow rhythm of the violin and the piano. Section 4 (03:02–03:06): There is an abruptly increased pitch in violin creating a nostalgic mood before toning down to the slow violin and piano rhythm. This is slightly similar to the above section 4 at time 01:23. Section 5 (03:06–03:34): Piano and violin again play in a slow rhythm. • 9. Gustav Mahler And His Fifth Symphony Gustav Mahler and His 5th Symphony By the end of the 20th century, Gustav Mahler had established himself as one of the most loved and frequently performed symphonists of the modern era. Audiences enjoyed his work for the energy and emotion conveyed through each and every performance of his symphonies. Due to his particularly rich and provocative writing style, Mahler has become the influence of composers since his death and continues to remain at the forefront of modern musical symphonic consideration. According to modern records, Mahler was born July 7, 1860 in a small village in Bohemia. However, some scholars suggest that he and his family actually celebrated his birthday on the 1st of July each year (Stefan 9). He was of Jewish descent and the second of his parents' fourteen children, although more than half of his siblings did not survive infancy (Stefan 9). Mahler's Jewish heritage would later become a hindrance to his career due to politics of his given region. Nevertheless, Mahler grew up under his father, who ran a local business, and had a nurturing family life (Stefan 12). Like many other great composers of the past, Gustav Mahler was a fantastic musician even as a child. He began his musical endeavors at the age of four but discovered the piano later at age six. He was skilled to the point that he acquired a student of his own before he turned eight. He made a flattering wage of one cent an hour during this period of his "career" (Stefan 12). • 13. Jupiter : Symphony No. 41 Jupiter Symphony No. 41 is one of the last symphonies Mozart composed. Symphony No. 41 was the largest and most complex of his symphonies. The symphony is regarded by many critics as one of the greatest symphonies in classical music. The grand scale of the symphony along with the energy of the piece are what the symphony is known for. It is believed that Mozart was never able to hear this symphony because he passed before it could be performed. The work is nicknamed the Jupiter Symphony. However, the nickname did not stem from Mozart. It comes from a German musician Johann Peter Saloman. It received the nickname because of the emotional style of the piece that is created from the giant instrumentation. It represents the roman god Jupiter and his great power. The first movement of the symphony follows sonata form, but deviates from it by including more modulations. As the exposition begins the piece starts in C major. In the primary theme, there is a triplet motive that is automatically established. In addition, the dotted rhythm of m. 3 is also motivic and used through the entire movement. Mozart uses very contrasting dynamics in the first couple of measures. The piece opens at forte, but then dies down to piano in m. 3 only to return to forte in m. 5. Mozart also uses silence at the beginning of the movement to emphasize how highly articulated the movement is. Classical music often times represented complex emotional feelings in the music. The classical era brought forth a few new styles of music composition. One is known as symphony. Symphonies are normally multi movement works(10) containing four movements therefore resulting in dramatically longer pieces than the preceding era. Symphony orchestras contained the string instruments. To the strings were added wind instruments, usually the oboe and bassoon and fairly frequently the flute. The clarinet was introduced and gradually became a regular member of the orchestra. However, the brass section(11) was not yet introduced. The only brass instrument that was normally included was the French horn. Trumpets, along with the timpani or kettle drums, were used only for reinforcing volume or rhythm. Another form that developed from this era was sonata form(12) which was structured through binary form(13). The classical suite(14) also was derived from this era. Variety of melodies, rhythms and dynamics using crescendo, diminuendo and sforzando(15) were more commonplace in the Classical period than they had been in the Baroque. Analysis Of Sergei Prokofiev 's Symphony Andrew Burden 4/24/16 Allison Smith (TA) Music 101 Sergei Prokofiev's Symphony No.1, Classical Symphony, a favorite to many, is a major piece of the orchestral repertoire. The piece was composed from 1916 to 1917 and was in a new genre; neo– classism. This new genre was due the reaction to the expressionism and the perceived formlessness of the late–romantic music during the time period (Whittall). In fact, the Classical Symphony is one of the earliest works of music using the aesthetic of the neo–classical movement, and it is possibly the earliest symphony to do so (Green). Despite being written in the early 20th century during the midst of the Russian revolution, Prokfiev stayed true to the important aspects of pre romantic instrumentation and structural, harmonic, and melodic styles. As previously stated, the Classical Symphony was written in the midst of the Russian Revolutions in 1917. These revolutions were the cause of major turning points in Russian history and Prokofiev was stuck at the heart of it in Petrograd, the current day Saint Petersburg. Trouble during this period would begin with "protests of thousands", escalating with food fights and fires until tsar Nicholas was abdicated (Nice, 130). During this chain of events, Prokofiev would find himself "taking refuge from time to time behind projecting walls when the shooting became too intense" (Nice, 130). Presto– Assai meno presto (trio) (F major) IV. Allegro con brio (A major) Some general characteristics of this symphony are: The turbulent joy and dynamism, rhythmic audacity full of vigor and novelty, evolved and complex harmony, the emancipation of orchestral timbres (especially the prominent role of wind instruments). The first Movement: Poco sostenuto – Vivace (A major): It's in sonata form. A slow introduction of large dimensions, precedes the first time, which fixes the luminous and rustic nature of the work. There are contrasts of timbres and abrupt harmonic modulations. This movement have confusing wave of ascending scales, with the usual preparatory character, from which emerges only a beautiful melody of the oboe, a kind of slow march in "C major", which could be described as idyllic if the virtue of rhythm did not exist. . The dominant tone is hammered repeatedly, first with equal rhythmic values, then – almost standing out one note to the other, the jumping division of the rhythm is in compound double. Theme A of the sonata is rhythmically clear and is initially exposed by the flute, whereas theme B is somewhat diffuse in its melodic profile. It is a structurally very complex movement. 2º. In this composition the listener is able to tell that there is some form of interaction between the bird and the wolf since both of the instruments that represent them are used. • 25. Mahler Symphony 5 Analysis Mahler Symphony 5 Putting together a performance of a Mahler symphony, with its massive forces length, always requires tremendous resources. As such, it can be very disappointing when, investement in these resources result in a subpar performance. Take for example Christoph Eschenbach's performance with L'Orchestre de Paris in 2009, which is very underwhelming, especially when compared to Gergiev's performance with the World Orchestra for Peace at the BBC proms in 2010, based on, the technical skill exhibited, attention to details in the score, and interpretation of emotional content. Eschenbach's recording is extremely problematic, simply due to technical issues, specifically, having unified entrances and maintaining tempi. This comes through immediately in the first movement. The first entrance after the trumpet solo (m. 13) sounds almost as if the brass are playing a grace note to the cymbal crash. This is detrimental to the power of that chord. Immediately after that, the beat 4 pick–ups are a mess. In comparison, in Gergiev's recording those opening chords are riveting, and with the intensity of the unified beat 4 pick–ups, the audience almost can't help but be glued to their seats in the presence of the overbearing orchestral sound this movement calls for. Pick–ups continue to be a problem for Eschenbach throughout the first 3 movements. This results in an uninteresting performance of the 1st and 3rd movements because much of the character is lost. The second concert I attended was performed by the Richardson Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra performed "Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, BWV 582" by Bach, which is part of the Baroque era. The string instruments of the orchestra performed with the hair of the bow, in other words, arco (7). The piece had a distinct part where the harp played. The ensemble was large, in order to attain the full sound of the piece. The instruments played in the orchestra did not comply with the typical orchestras of the Baroque era because it did not have a distinct part where were the main instruments were the piano and the bass, or more commonly known as basso continuo (10). During his engagement at the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, he adopted the novel idea of the conductor as the interpreter and demanded precise obedience of the score. His example set the pace for conductors throughout Europe and subsequently created a new branch in the art of music. Furthermore, he helped codify the modern classical concert by programming complete movements of large pieces sequentially rather than interspersing them with unrelated arias or chamber pieces. Mendelssohn also played an important role in reviving forgotten works from the earlier centuries, most notably directing the first performance of J. S. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This theme begins with a legato and lyrical style that contrasts the staccato style of the first theme. The violins are used as an accompaniment of the melodic exchange between the flute and the oboe. This exchange creates a back and forth movement between the two instruments. The melody begins with a rising fourth which is a link to the first theme. The accompaniment plays staccato arpeggios which gives a reminder of the last measure of the first theme. From measure 65, the use of syncopation previously heard measures 57 to 58 gives rhythmic drive through this section. The violins then take the lead and restate the theme with the flutes and oboes answering. Beethoven's use of diminished chords, in measure 65, and adding emphasis using sforzando adds more the dramatic nature of the passage. In measure 69, the strings have rising eighth notes with semitones. A few measures later the flutes and oboes double the violins' rising eighth notes which again underlines the importance of the rising semitone. This last until measure 77 as the second theme returns to a soft ending as the lyrical phrases played by the violins, oboes, and flutes are now played by the cellos and double basses. The codetta, or closing, begins at measure 88 and lasts until measure 110. This section creates a conclusion by combining familiar elements from the first and second themes. In measures 94 to 99, the strings have tremolos which gives a sensation of the music being at fast rhythmic tempo and in measures 100 to 109 the woodwinds and horns have slurred phrases which resembles the lyrical phrases played in the second ... Mr. Fakhouri had also explained how this is one of his favorite pieces and just had to have his orchestra perfect, as they did successfully. After a minor wobble of the director stand, a few adjustments and giggles, Symphony No.1 in D major began. The first movement started off with an eerie introduction, with the first two notes morphing into a birdcall as well as main theme but a very magical sound. It made for a very soothing, romantic time. Throughout the piece I felt as if it told a story as most music does, what I came to believe it was a love story. The Allegro begins in the cello with the second Wayfarer song, "Ging heut morgen Ubers Feld," (I Walked this Morning over the Field). With a light and happy tone in the beginning as if two lovers had just met, this was the main theme of this movement. Suddenly there was a deep, heavy part maybe one of despair in paradise but that only lasted for a short period as it came to a victorious ending of happily ever after. (Kahn) The second movement Scherzo, gave more of an elegant, royal ball sound. Where the women dress in gowns and the men in tuxedos, while drinking wine and dancing the night away. This movement has the rhythm of the Landler, an Australian folk dance. It conforms to the classic minuet and trio form though Mahler takes the first section beyond the standard repeat structure. The first three notes of the Scherzo and the Trio recall the birdcall theme from the first movement. If ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Richard Georg Strauss was born June 11th, 1864, he was one of the leading German composers of the late Romantic and early Modern eras. He is known for his operas such as Elektra, Die Frau one Schatten, and Salome. The composition I am going to analyze from Richard Strauss is his "An Alpine Symphony." An Alpine Symphony begins in low volume, leaving me with a feeling of suspense. The instruments that commenced the piece was a fragment of the string section known as the second violins. The string section completely joined in but became over taken by a fragment of the brass section which was the trombones. The two instruments bring in excitement, the crashing of the cymbals and the rumble of the timpani are two loud figures, I believe this section represents the composers emotion when he was waking up from a long night of sleep. Strauss probably felt an attachment to the day time because it is possible that he did his best work during the day time. The xylophone was ultimately annexed during this section as the final member of the percussion section. Like the previous section "Night", the "light" section began to annex in the french horns, trombones, and string section.
