Skeletisation of a dead body has made identification of the remains trickier. As humans, we become
accustomed to recognise others from outer body appearances, not their insides. However, it is well
established that morphological and metric changes occur on certain bones through a human's
lifetime (e.g. Pelvis: Phenice, 1969, Skull: Meindl and Lovejoy, 1985, Long bones: France, 1998)
making identification possible. To complicate matters, morphological and metric changes can differ
within and between human population groups due to intrinsic and extrinsic factors (DiGangi and
Moore, 2012). An example of this is nutritional deficiency, which effects males more than females
and causes reduced sexual dimorphism (Ross, Baker and Falsetti, 2003). Recently, there has been a

They focus on the costochondral ossification of the first rib in different populations which included
European Americans, Lebanese, Solomon Islanders, and a veterans group (Semine & Damon, 1975).
The measurements of costochondral ossification was determined from chest roentgenograms and the
extent of ossification was rated from 0, being no ossification seen, to 4, meaning ossification was
almost completed. Within all the populations and sexes measured, the shapes of the age's curves
were similar. However different dietary habits of the Solomon Islanders delivered marginally
skewed results. The ossification of the first rib was greater in males than females, regardless of age.
For the lower ribs, males showed greater ossification before age 45, but women showed greater
ossification after age 45, although the differences between the two can be attributed to different
endocrine factors. Overall there are many different factors that can skew the age differences on the
costochondral junctions, therefore it cannot give an accurate age or even a small age range. The
mineral rich diets of the Lebanese population caused them to have greater ossification than the other
populations, whose diet was mostly carbs. The study concludes that determining sex from the
costochondral ossification is highly accurate since the data from the first rib ossification
measurements show that males ossify more than females throughout all the populations, however it
is less likely to garner an accurate age. The study concluded that the population differences in
costochondral ossification were significant enough to warrant separate standards for disparate

noticed that it appeared dark and porous. It was flexible. The compact bone made up the majority of
