Career Profile – Summary
Following my graduation in May 1984, I had some minor part-time translation jobs until
I joined Cairo's branch of Foster Parents Plan International (“Plan”), an international
social development organization, where I worked for three and a half years. This was
almost my first hands-on translation experience. Six months after I joined Plan, I was
promoted to Supervisor of the Translation Section and, after one year, to Head of the
Donor Services Department (the Department responsible for relations with donors,
including the Translation Section). In those two last positions, I was responsible for
ensuring the quality of translation and training and onboarding of new translators. Plus, I
got an early start with PC's, something quite new in Egypt at the time. About three years
after my recruitment, I was transferred to the position of Electronic Data Processing
Department Head, to utilize my skills in programming databases in dBase III+ to conduct
Plan’s first project for setting up a baseline database on the social and economic
conditions of the aid-receiving families.
Concurrently with my work in Foster Parents Plan Egypt, I taught English at Cairo
University's Faculty of Arts.
In June 1988 I moved to Saudi Arabia where I worked for Geosurvey Holdings Ltd. (a
company implementing a map-production project for Saudi Arabia's Military Survey
Department) as a translator/secretary for about six and a half years, during which I gained
more experience in translation.
I returned to Egypt in December 1994, and in May 1995 I joined Market Insight Egypt
for about one and a half years, serving as a Translator/Executive Assistant to the Field
Manager, where I dealt with market research and many administrative issues.

In December 1996, I joined the Saudi Arabian Oil Company ("Saudi Aramco"), where
I'm still working up to the present time. Working for Saudi Aramco helped me
consolidate my grasp on translation in many areas like economic, financial, legal, public
relations, and official correspondence translation, in addition to mastering the relevant
MS Office applications such as MS Word, MS Excel, MS Powerpoint, and, computer-
aided translation (CAT) tools like TRADOS and, to a lesser degree, WordFast.
I am also familiar with programming. I programmed in dBase III+ and dBase IV for
Foster Parents Plan and Geosurvey Holdings Ltd. Later on, I learned web design concepts
(HTML) and programming in Perl, C++ and Visual Basic

Employer: The Saudi Arabian Oil Company (“Saudi Aramco”), Dhahran, Saudi

Position: Translation Analyst (started as Translation Specialist II, then promoted to
Translation Specialist I, then to Translation Analyst).
Duties: Translation/revision of company correspondence, reports and studies.
As a Translation Specialist II, I did more translation than revision. My
most important assignments included the Company’s business plans and
annual reports (covering economic, technical, and corporate social
responsibility "CSR" issues); Board minutes; legal documents, contracts
and draft laws (and the Company’s comments thereon); speeches by
government and company officials; press releases; correspondence with
the Royal Court, the Ministry of Energy, Industry and Mineral Resources,
the General Auditing Bureau (on financial and accounting issues) and
other government and private entities; other technical documents about the
Company’s projects; and many other documents in the areas of petroleum,
accounting, finance and economics. I also translated many articles for the
Company’s publications, both into English and Arabic.
As a Translation Specialist I and, later, Translation Analyst, I dealt with
the same types of documents mentioned above, but my role became more
mixed between translation of more sensitive documents and revision of
other colleagues’ translation. My current duties also include mentoring
less-seasoned and newly-recruited colleagues (as part of knowledge
transfer), and reviewing and advising on the CV’s of new applicants.

Duties: I translated mostly administrative company documents in addition to some
technical documents in the field of surveying and map production,
including some training manuals and contracts. I also did consecutive
interpretation and secretarial and administrative work.

Duties: My first assignments were to translate correspondence between donors
and the families they sponsored, in addition to case histories of newly-
enrolled families and annual progress reports. I also did a lot of
consecutive translation during visits by western donors to the families they
sponsored. On 1 June 1985 I was promoted to the position of Translation
Section Supervisor and became responsible for assigning and checking
translation, in addition to preparing translators’ appraisals. I also prepared
the recipient families database (in the dBASE III+ programming language)
and trained operators on data entry. On 1 April 1987 I was promoted
again to Donor Services Department Head and, on 1 January 1988, I was
assigned as Electronic Data Processing Department Head to help organize
Plan’s first economic and social survey and set up its database.
