Nutrition during pregnancy is a critical dimension not only for women’s health but also for the lifelong health of the offspring. Very limited national data exist on the usual dietary intakes of pregnant women. Some 3% of women were taking more than the tolerable amount of iron and folic acid. Almost all Pregnant women may not be getting all the vitamins and nutrients that are usually recommended to them during pregnancy, a new survey finds. Researchers asked more than 1,000 pregnant women whether they took dietary supplements, and even though most of the women took supplements, many were not meeting the recommended intake: More than 10% did not were taking less than the recommended amount of magnesium, iron,of the women included in the study were also consuming high amounts of sodium. The study authors call for better dietary supplement recommendations to better help pregnant women get the nutrients they need.

ABSTRACT- This study aimed to assess the awareness of the importance of folic acid in preventing neural tube defects (the timing of folic acid supplementation and the right doses) in Jeddah the western region of Saudi Arabia. A sample of 501 married women in the reproductive age (19-45 years) who visited the outpatients clinics at King Abdulaziz University Hospital between August and October/2015 were asked to participate in a survey study targeting the awareness and the use of folic acid before and during pregnancy. First step was collecting Participants' responds on a range of questions related to socio demographic & medical characteristics. Then in second step they were provided with questions related to their awareness before and after reading the distributed intervention brochure. Of the 501 Participants, 317 (63.3%) were Saudis, many were above 30 years of age (55.1%), 460 (91.8%) heard about folic acid & 429 (85.6%) have taken it. However, only 169 (33.7%) knew that it must be given during preconception and as early as the 1st 12 weeks of gestation. A significant difference was found before and after reading the brochure in Participants' knowledge about the benefits of folic acid in preventing neural tubal defect , the critical time of administration & the right doses (P <0.000,><0.000,><0.000)><0.000). 279 (71.2%) of the participants reported the medical staff as to be their main source of information. The health care professionals and media need to increase women awareness about the importance of taking folic acid supplementation in the proper time to reduce the risk of neural tube defects. Zulfi qar A Bhutta, Jai K Das, Arjumand Rizvi, Michelle F Gaff ey, Neff Walker, Susan Horton, Patrick Webb, Anna Lartey, Robert E Black, The Lancet Nutrition Interventions Review Group, and the Maternal and Child Nutrition Study Group Maternal undernutrition contributes to 800 000 neonatal deaths annually through small for gestational age births; stunting, wasting, and micronutrient defi ciencies are estimated to underlie nearly 3·1 million child deaths annually. Progress has been made with many interventions implemented at scale and the evidence for eff ectiveness of nutrition interventions and delivery strategies has grown since The Lancet Series on Maternal and Child Undernutrition in 2008. We did a comprehensive update of interventions to address undernutrition and micronutrient defi ciencies in women and children and used standard methods to assess emerging new evidence for delivery platforms. We modelled the eff ect on lives saved and cost of these interventions in the 34 countries that have 90% of the world’s children with stunted growth. We also examined the eff ect of various delivery platforms and delivery options using community health workers to engage poor populations and promote behaviour change, access and uptake of interventions. Our analysis suggests the current total of deaths in children younger than 5 years can be reduced by 15% if populations can access ten evidence-based nutrition interventions at 90% coverage. Additionally, access to and uptake of iodised salt can alleviate iodine defi ciency and improve health outcomes. Accelerated gains are possible and about a fi fth of the existing burden of stunting can be averted using these approaches, if access is improved in this way. The estimated total additional annual cost involved for scaling up access to these ten direct nutrition interventions in the 34 focus countries is Int$9·6 billion per year. Continued investments in nutrition-specifi c interventions to avert maternal and child undernutrition and micronutrient defi ciencies through community engagement and delivery strategies that can reach poor segments of the population at greatest risk can make a great diff erence. If this improved access is linked to nutrition-sensitive approaches—ie, women’s empowerment, agriculture, food systems, education, employment, social protection, and safety nets—they can greatly accelerate progress in countries with the highest burden of maternal and child undernutrition and mortality. Forty percent (%) of Zambian children under age 5 were stunted in 2013. Stunting begins with a woman’s pre-pregnancy nutrition status and is often associated with poor dietary diversity, including low intake of animal-source foods (ASFs). This study assessed food attitudes, dietary intake of women of reproductive age (WRA), and costs of key nutrients in Bundabunda Ward, Zambia. A mixed-method approach was used, including participatory observation, focus-group discussions with WRA (nulliparous adolescents and pregnant, breastfeeding, and multiparous women), interviews with community health workers (CHWs), and nutritional analysis of WRA’s diets (n = 33). The study found WRA and CHWs considered nutrition to be important, but a lack of financial resources, inflexible complementary feeding advice, and competing priorities compromised their dietary quality. All WRA’s diets were high in maize and other plant-based foods, and relatively low in ASFs and wild foods. WRA were unlikely to meet their metabolic demands for some amino acids, namely, lysine and tryptophan. Mean iron intake in adolescents was inadequate and calcium intake across groups met less than 50% of requirements (recommended nutrient intake). However, mean intake of energy, protein, zinc, and vitamin A across all groups appeared adequate compared to the recommended intake for lifestage. Further efforts on community and national levels, including strengthening the teaching capacity of CHWs in nutrition; increasing the availability, accessibility, and utilization of ASFs; and further development of context-specific food-based guidelines, are necessary to ameliorate food security challenges that underpin the ongoing high prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies and stunting in Bundabunda Ward and similar contexts.
