Choices – I prefer Bodoni as a go-to font but figured Garamond would look nice with the blues which are my favorite colors.
Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder…
But it begins in the mind of the designer.
When I was growing up I was fascinated by crayons and colors in general. How you could mix them to make new colors or how you could combine them and make something amazing.
As with any great designer, I want to create things that people will remember. But I want to go further than that, I want the things I create to resonate within their minds. I want to create things that will drive them to purchase the product or service being offered.
I draw my inspiration from my surroundings. I may see, hear or smell something that will lead me down a path my previous ideas may have made me miss.
Another great source of inspiration comes from other designers. Graphic design greats like Paul Rand have created timeless things that I believe budding designers can learn from.
If any of my designs can make an impact on the world, or even just a small community, I will consider myself blessed. I believe it is a great thing to design something beautiful, but I believe it is even better when you can design something that speaks to people.
In design I value the individual parts, such as color and typography, and how these individual parts co-exist as a whole.
I believe that there is a lot of good design out in the world. But not much great design. I believe the world needs more great design and fewer good. Perhaps a bigger impact with less clutter approach.
When presented a design idea, I like to look at what the design problem is first and foremost. If re-creating a design, what didn’t work the first time? Why didn’t it work? What could have been done differently? What can I do differently to make the client happy and the consumer want to buy the product/service?
ImaginativeDesigner
ImaginativeDesigner to me means using my imagination to design things that are unexpected yet beautiful.
How have I gone about developing myself? I’m glad you asked!
Several years ago I made the decision to return to school. I wanted to provide a better life for myself and for my child but had no idea what direction to head.
I decided to give it a try and took one Graphic Design course. Well, I fell in love!
I am looking forward to continuing to learn Graphic Design throughout the rest of my school career and into any future positions I may hold. However, I do have a lot of work experience in various positions that I believe will aid me in the future.
I believe that this past work experience will give me the advantage to excel faster than my competition. I do not believe that there are many people who know how to diplomatically deal with a frustrating client and have them leave happy when they came in angry.
One of my class projects was to create an ad for a company that specialized in cooking spices. They did not want to change their logo, tag line or packaging. This presented a unique challenge due to the fact that you were somewhat constrained on color choices.
I decided to play off of their tag line “Authentic Flavor”. This tag line made me think of cook-outs and my grandmothers cooking. However, this also made me think of out of date kitchens and bonfires. And that was not the look I was going for in the ad campaign.
People are constantly upgrading their kitchens to make cooking easier and faster. I thought, what would be better than to have that authentic flavor in a modern kitchen. So, combining my ideas, I incorporated the tag line into the ad. Authentic flavor in your modern kitchen.
My professor at the time said that the completed ad was “hauntingly beautiful” and she believed that it could win an award. My goal moving forward after I graduate would be to become an Art Director in roughly 10-12 years. When I am able to accomplish this, I will then consider myself close to becoming successful. I believe that If I call myself successful, my passion and hunger will fade and I will stop learning.
I know that this is a very ambitious goal but I believe that I can accomplish it. Since I have started learning Graphic Design, I have found that the more I learn the more passionate I become about it and the more I want to learn about it.
