Many people believe that procrastination is derived completely from laziness but the culprit could be
multiple things, including perfectionism. This can become a huge problem for perfectionists,
especially perfectionist students. They most likely will overthink projects and put off getting started
because they're afraid they won't be able to make them as perfect as they want them to be. Luckily
this is a common issue among students and there are many different techniques to cope with it.
Students can overcome procrastination due to perfectionism by setting S.M.A.R.T goals, creating
detailed to–do lists, and by just getting started. Students can avoid procrastination by following the
S.M.A.R.T. goal guidelines. All of your goals should be specific (s), measurable (m), achievable (a),
realistic (r), and time–sensitive (t). A specific goal is clear, focused, concise, and well–defined
("Ensure Your Success"). Instead of a general goal like "I want to get my degree," turn that into
something more specific like "I am going to get my Bachelor's degree in Business Administration
from George Mason University" ("Ensure Your Success"). To make goals measurable, establish
timelines and dates so you can measure your progress and stay on track to meet targets. Goals
need to be achievable. Evaluate your own work ethic, see what you're willing to do, and shape your
goal around that so you know it is something you're capable of doing. A goal needs to be realistic,
something that you are

Persuasive Essay On Procrastination
Have you ever postponed something super important because you wanted to have fun on a Friday
night? Convincing yourself "Oh, I'll just get it done tomorrow?" This action of putting off a task
until the next day or a later time is called procrastination. Someone displaying procrastination would
either be delaying their work for another job that they consider more important or distracting
themselves with an activity that is more interesting. Many people believe that only disorganized or
lazy people acquire or pick up this intrusive habit, but I disagree with this misconception. Productive
people, too, occasionally lack the desire to get things done on time. Take for example myself; I have
always struggled with this mannerism and even more...show more content...
The prefrontal cortex is what makes an individual decide to engage in a task. With that in mind,
putting work off makes it easier for the limbic system to dominate and give immediate pleasure
feelings which the brain prefers. In other words, people begin to manipulate this perception and
enjoy the short–term effects because it becomes more satisfying not to complete the task. This
habit can start to control how or when we choose to tend to our responsibilities (Spencer). I
recognize this feeling on a daily basis. For example, there was a day that I decided I was going to
study in the library as I would hopefully be more productive in that setting. However, as soon as I
sat down I began to fiddle with everything I could get my hands on. From obnoxiously twirling my
pencil to watching time–consuming YouTube videos, I wasn 't very productive, and as a result, I
had to cram until two AM for an exam the next day. I had always known thatprocrastination was
satisfying, and now with this new information that confirms that it feeds off of my "good" feelings
based on my body 's anatomy. Moving on, I then researched how to recognize why myself and
others procrastinate in the first place. The first reason people procrastinate is that they "become"
perfectionists. As procrastination becomes a more common act, it can also bring about the action of
perfectionism. Harold Taylor does a fantastic job at identifying perfectionism, along with other

Procrastination
Procrastination is the avoidance of doing a task that needs to be accomplished. Procrastination has a
high potential for painful consequences. It may interfere with our personal or academic success.
There are those of us who wait until the due date is a day away. I am not talking about making sure
the money is in the bank. I am talking about putting it off because it is a tedious chore that we do
not enjoy doing.
Procrastination is a big problem for many, and one that can harm your career. Whether your
procrastination causes you to arrive late at work or late for meetings, or keeps you from turning
projects in on time, employers do not look positively upon it...show more content...
If this is the case, begin at the beginning, with the first segment, and do it extraordinarily well. But
only strive for perfection where it counts. The rest of the time, just do it. Remember, the next time
you're procrastinating and can't seem to overcome it, stop and figure out why. Is the task even worth
doing? If so, pick the appropriate solution based upon the root cause and you'll whittle away those
piles in no time.
Also procrastination can be stopped if you recognize self–defeating problems such as fear and
anxiety, difficulty concentrating, poor time management, indecisiveness and perfectionism. Identify
your own goals, strengths and weaknesses, values and priorities. Compare your actions with the
values you feel you have. Are your values consistent with your actions?
Discipline yourself to use time wisely: Set priorities. Study in small blocks instead of long time
periods. For example, you will accomplish more if you study/work in 60 minute blocks and take
frequent 10 minute breaks in between, than if you study/work for 2–3 hours straight, with no breaks.
Reward yourself after you complete a task. Motivate yourself to study: Dwell on success, not on
failure. Try to study in small groups. Break large assignments into small tasks. Keep a reminder
schedule and checklist. Set realistic goals. Modify your environment: Eliminate or minimize noise
/ distraction. Ensure adequate lighting. Have necessary equipment at hand.

Procrastination, putting things off until the last minute, can have serious consequences on a person's
life. I fully agree with this statement because I have personally been affected by procrastination,
waiting until the last minute will never do you any good. The main reason why procrastination isn't
a great idea is because the amount of stress that comes along with doing things at the very last
minute. When you get stressed you're more prone to making mistakes than if you did it a week
before the project was due, the more mistakes the worse your grade will be. It is very hard to take
care of the small detail when you're in such hurry just to complete the project. I remember back in

our grade. I have also procrastinated and made a really good grades too, but i may have gotten a

Sometimes procrastination can get you killed, this becomes true when you put off your medical
condition or you put off having that surgery you need just because you don't want to take the time
to do so. We as human beings tend to stray away from the thing we do not enjoy doing, that
explains why I did not want to do my junior paper because writing isn't my most favorite thing to

the time you spent procrastinating cannot be given back to you it is considered wasted time. Also
being a procrastinator can affect your reputation, nobody ever wants to be known as the person who
cannot keep their word. So take a word from the wise procrastination is not

Essay about Procrastination
When you conquer procrastination, you will learn what it is, how it happens and finally experience
success by not allowing it to happen again.
Procrastination happens when a task is put off until a later time because the task is not desirable.
There are several reasons procrastination happens including, confusion and misunderstanding exactly
what needs done and how to do it. Procrastination causes lack of production, loss of time, and
decrease in revenue. "Procrastination is one main cause of poor management, lost productivity, and
lost revenue" (Ricci, 2004).
Putting something off until later can actually be more exhausting than the task at hand. Although

Start with the most difficult tasks with a high energy level. As the energy level decreases, work
on the easier tasks. If a task is too large to complete in one setting, break it down into several
smaller tasks. Maintain discipline by not stopping until the task is complete. Allowing interruptions
at specific times will reduce the number of distractions. Organization skills are depended on to
achieve tasks easier. Creating a tidy work area will produce a positive environment. Brainstorming
can be an incredible process and give the ability to list everything that a specific task requires.
Imagine yourself doing the task and speak to yourself. Talking to yourself could result in a positive
reaction and prevent procrastination from becoming a habit. Following through and force the
completion of a task will fend falling into an unmanageable practice.
Finding a motivational reward may help to become successful in beating procrastination. Receiving
a reward at the end of small tasks will encourage the completion of the rest of the tasks, which will
in turn accomplish goals. Mistakes are not bad they are a learning tool. Without making mistakes,
the same result would happen repeatedly. Prepare for the worst possible outcome and find a
reasonable solution.
Defeat procrastination by learning what it is, how it happens and experience victory by not allowing
it to become a habit. Following simple steps

Procrastination In College Essay
"I have a ton of homework to do, but let's go hang out anyways!" This is an example of
procrastination. Procrastinating is an action of delaying or postponing something. The problems of
procrastinating effects a lot of students in college and can sometimes keep them from receiving
better grades on their assignments. Procrastination affects around 90 percent of college students. (qtd
in Hubbard) Procrastinating occurs when students feel lack of motivation, not having accountability
for their "extra work," or just not understanding the assignment. Many college students are under ton
of stress and tend to delay working on assignments to ease the stress. This habit results in

was a few months away from theirs. After reading through the article and having to answer
comprehensive questions, the students that had the same birthday as the author shown to have better
understanding of the biography, as well as answering the questions correctly. The students who had
further birthdays experienced negative feelings towards the classroom while the other students felt
positive. (qtd in Markman) This study shows us that small things like having the same birthday as
someone else gives people motivation. When working together with a few other people from your
class to study for an exam, you can seek motivation from your peers. Your peers can guide you
through your assignments as well as grow into a cohesive relationship if they allow it. This creates a
warmer bond between students and helps them be comfortable with their environment, just like the
students felt positive during their class period after reading a biography by someone with the same
birthday as them. Therefore, study groups can

To procrastinate is to put off doing something out of casual carelessness or common laziness. It
often needlessly postpones or delays events or objectives in your life which can effect others.
Procrastination is almost like a drug in your life, because once you start doing it a little bit, it
slowly adds up to a dependency that you will find to be common habit. Although this is what we all
perceive procrastination to be bad, there are some benefits to it. It can have beneficial impact on
how you take pressure, or how well you can act when time is limited.
Procrastination is something that you don't naturally have an innate ability to do. It is often brought
on by finding ways...show more content...
But it will progressively add up in most cases, the student will start to not study like they know
they should be, but rather they go and do something else that isn't as beneficial. After a while that
people start to do this they think its not bad, even thought they are missing a few points here and
there from lowered studies and completed work. But it can eventually lean up to skipping classes,
which is one of the worse things you can do while in college, since generally there are no make
ups for missed assignments and test. This can then hurt your grades entirely, and therefore may
have you retake certain classes or take another year. This in turn can cause financial problems if it
where to happen on multiple occasions, then can effect your later life on paying off the bills or
charges that were made from it.
Procrastination is not always a very bad thing though; there are some points in your life that it
could prove to be a plus. If done enough you will be use to doing things last minute, which could
possibly help you in your career with handling pressure when you boss tells you do something
within a set amount of time. Also extended amounts of doing this bad habit could help you learn to
take pressure better, as example when you have a huge paper due by the next morning and you
need to keep your self calm or else it will show when your writing the paper. Even though these

Persuasive Essay On Procrastination
There are some things in this world that people tend to put off talking about for numerous reasons,
whether it be because it brings them pain or they just don't want to. One of those things that people
don't really talk about, as ironic as it sounds, is procrastination. There are numerous reasons why
people procrastinate, but the real question is: is procrastination natural? In my opinion, yes it is. We
all do it at some point in our lives despite how organized we are. This is true even according to
professionals. Bill Knaus, a doctor of education and writer for Psychology Today who wrote "Why
You Procrastinate and What to do About it," explains how procrastination comes naturally, "You
may think that tomorrow will take care of itself, and so delay is okay," (Knaus, 2010). This is not to
say that we all procrastinate on a regular basis, but rather we all do it at one point, intentional or
unintentional. Sometimes it is a very little piece of procrastination, something you wouldn't have
originally considered to be procrastination. For instance, putting off telling someone you have a
crush on them. Sure this may not seem like a form of procrastination, but in reality, it is. Putting off
anything is considered procrastination, even not telling someone you have a crush on them. So let's
carry on talking about the "not telling your crush you like them" example. First, we must figure out
why we do not tell them. Most common answers would typically include something along the lines of
anxiety, fear of rejection, or getting punched in the face by your crush's boyfriend. What do all
those things have in common? Well, to put it in short, they bring pain to yourself. No one wants
to inflict pain on their self, so that is why we hold things like this off as best and for as long as we
can. Therefore, since we do not want to inflict pain on ourselves, we pull away as a reflex, the same
way you do when you touch something a bit too hot. As Phil Stutz, a psychiatrist, and Barry
Michels, a psychotherapist, both authors of "The Real Reason We Procrastinate (and What to Do
About It)" for a health online magazine called Greatist, implies, "Without realizing it, most of us
instinctively retreat to a comfort zone and try our

Argumentative Essay On Procrastination
Procrastination is ignoring your responsibilities and avoiding them for no good reason. Experiencing
procrastination can have a positive or negative reaction according to the amount of the behavior. The
person that is procrastinating must first realize that they have a problem in order to find ways to
overcome procrastination because they are putting their health, family and job at risk. Twenty
percent of people realize they are procrastinators which in the end becomes a lifestyle. There are
various reasons why people procrastinate.
People procrastinate because they are afraid to fail, they have poor time management, they avoid
things that seem difficult or they feel depressed or they feel guilty. Some people believe that other

procrastinate as well. For example, a perfectionist may put off writing a paper until the night before
it is due and then they will have an excuse saying, "I restarted because I didn't like what I had
written.". Another example is that some philosophers and scientists, such that Aristotle questioned if
time even exists, and Einstein believed that time was a muddle in which the past, present and future
were only illusions.
First, a person must be honest with themselves and recognize that they are procrastinating. After
coming to the realization that one is a procrastinator, make a to do list with low priority tasks; work

I have many flaws, one of which being procrastination. Procrastination has been a flaw of mine
since I was three years old just learning to tie my shoe. When my dad told me that we were going
to learn to tie my shoes today I would says something like, "I'm Hungry" or "I don't feel too good
today", and I would make these excuses up all day until it was bedtime so by then it was too late
to tie my shoes. Now just like avoiding and putting off tying my shoes I also put off my bedtime.
As soon as my mom or dad turned off my bedroom light I would tell them that I needed a drink, I
was hungry, or the most famous one was I had to go to the bathroom. I would sit in the bathroom for
up to 15 minutes just avoiding going to bed.

Also when my mom or dad asks me to dishes I go immediately so then I don't have a chance to
procrastinate and so it's done and over with.
Gossiping is another flaw that I struggle with. No matter how hard I try not to it always seems to
happen anyway. Whether it's talking about someone behind their back good or bad or if it's sharing
someone else's news or secrets when they told me not to.
I will be sitting at my desk and if someone says something that I know anything about then I
immediately chimed in even if it's not my place too. Another way is when someone comes to me
and starts telling me something about someone I don't stop them. I let them sit there and gossip to
me because for some reason I feel that I have to, but I don't. Gossiping is a choice that I can't seem
to stop myself from making and it makes me sick.
When I gossip and then realize that's what I'm doing it brings me down to know that it's such a
bad habit that I didn't even realize what I was doing. As soon as I hear it I don't even think about
whether this person should be telling me this or not I just listen, and what's even worse is when I
take that information and share it with someone else. I don't mean to do this but like I said it is such
a bad habit that I do it subconsciously.
My last flaw that I'm going to talk about are my insecurities,

Rhetorical Analysis On Procrastination
Tim Urban's Ted talk on procrastination was attention grabbing. His speaking style was successful
because of many factors. His actual speech was not as well put together as it could have been, but
through his personality, tone, and use of visuals, he successfully grabbed the attention of the viewers.
Ted Urbans personality plays a huge role in his speaking style. He is very bouncy and light weight,
keeping everyone in a rather good mood. His personality is the biggest key to keeping viewers
attentive, which is a very important goal during a speech.
His tone matched the subject he was talking about very well. Procrastination is generally not a heavy
topic, therefore his tone was not heavy. The tone was much like his own personality, light

Cause and Effect -- Procrastination Essay
Procrastination "I'll stop procrastinating...Tomorrow." This is a mindset that is possessed by a
majority of students today. Although putting off writing that English paper until the night before it

for that English paper? Very few are spared from the epidemic known asprocrastination. Even less
overcome this issue. In order to successfully defeat procrastination, we must first understand it.
According to the Merriam–Webster dictionary, to procrastinate is "to put off intentionally the doing
of something that should be done." Another way of putting it is "to wait until the last minute."
Procrastination is a very bad habit. Even though...show more content...
With that being said, being overwhelmed certainly does not help. This can lead to forgetting
important details and due dates. Another factor that causes procrastination is fear. Fear is a very
powerful emotion. Whenever someone is faced with a difficult task, they can become overran by
the fear of not being able to complete it. People who succumb to this are setting themselves up for
failure. Whenever someone feels as if they are going to fail, they tend to postpone the task for as
long as possible. This means that they often try to avoid the task all together until completion is
absolutely necessary. In doing so, the number of tasks that need to be done increases. However, the
time required to complete them does not. Perfectionism can also lead to procrastination. This is
because a person is setting a goal for themselves that is unreachable. Whenever these goals are not
met, they are a huge source of discouragement even though they couldn't have been completed in
the first place. This will result in lower productivity. From here, it is nothing but a downward
spiral. One must realize that no one can write the perfect English paper. Instead of trying to
accomplish this, we should focus our time and effort on writing the best paper according to our
personal abilities. However, no one should be satisfied with less than what can be achieved. All of
these factors lead to the lack of motivation. Personally, I

Thesis About Procrastination
People often relate procrastination to lazy people, adamantly believing that it leads to inevitable
failure. With Countless of articles , books & guides on how to get over procrastination , The Author
John Rampton in his article "Procrastination or Contemplation?" chose to spark off a debate by
issuing his ideas on how procrastination can actually be fruitful. Rampton states the bright side of
procrastination and how it can lead to success rather than the common negative myths about this
issue. As much as I was convinced by Mr.Rampton's ideas, I still refuse to believe in them. Mr.
Rampton, you give me no guarantees.
In this article John Rampton listed some of the positive aspects of procrastination, although some of
them were both logical and relatable but the non–credibility of the sources weakened them & made
them less convincible. What made his article engaging is that the ideas he introduced were relatable
to the majority. As a procrastinator myself , i found his definition of Procrastination quite interesting
where he said "procrastination is using fear as a motivator" , its actually true that we finish some
tasks on time only out of fear. Besides, the reasons we delay doing a certain task is usually because

A British actor, Christopher Parker once said, "Procrastination is like a credit card: it's a lot of fun
until you get the bill." This statement can be easily related to myself, being a university student,
unfortunately, at both of these levels (have you ever heard of a financially stable student?). My
personal reflection will mainly be focusing on the first part of this statement. My most significant
study skill I need to improve on is declining the amount I spend procrastinating and learning to better
my time management skills. A fear I have with this approach to studying is how this could
negatively affect my professional work towards the future. Prior to beginning my career, I would
like to have conquered my time management deficiencies.
MY GOAL: I will overcome my procrastination habits by a maximum of 1 year, as that is when I
will start a new school year, with a better approach to my learning. During that one year, I will
achieve this goal by setting scheduled studying sessions, I can create new habits and maintain a
checklist of theses sessions so that I am able to visualize my progress. I also feel that rewarding
myself with an appropriate timed breaks in–between my scheduled study sessions will also keep my
interests high in terms of what is being studied. This is a good learning goal for me because I feel
like one thing I lack most when I'm studying, mainly for courses that are challenging in their
nature, is motivation. With the use of a calendar, I am able to mark down due dates for
assignments and tests, I have come to a realization that this needs to be taken one step further. By
creating a checklist, I will be able to visually see my progress and can see how I am preforming with
my short–term goals, and it is also evident that in completion of these goals it will instil a sense of
pride that comes from achievement. With this I am hoping that it creates a continuous cycle of
motivation, as well as pride so that I view studying from a more positive outlook.
ACTION STEPS: One of my favourite examples in the online sessions was Jacob's story through
procrastination. Being a university student, I can relate with his lifestyle. My grades have improved

How to Stop Procrastinating – Step by Step9
Introduction
Are you putting off your important tasks again and again?
No worries! You are not the only one. Truth be told, numerous individuals delay to some degree–
however, some are so chronically influenced by procrastination that it stops them satisfying their
potential. Ultimately, it disturbs their career.
The way to controlling this ruinous propensity is to perceive when you start procrastinating, try to
understand why it happens to you and find a way to deal with your time and results better.
I have come to embrace my delaying nature to a specific degree. At the point when my schedule gets
too long, I basically start another one.
Procrastination can be an indication that what we are chipping away at the wrong thing. It can
likewise be an indication that possibly we have to step back, take a full breath, and recharge yourself
before handling the assignment again tomorrow.
Obviously, procrastination is a result of laziness. In the event that you have an exam to concentrate
on for, a paper to compose, or if you have a presentation to make or a supervisor or customer to
mollify, then the work will need to complete, whether you begin today or even put the task off until
tomorrow.
Perhaps you do not have a delaying issue as much as you have a work issue. In the event that you

Your environment is distracting and noisy. You keep running back and forth for equipment such as
pencils, erasers, dictionaries, and etc. Your desk is cluttered and unorganized and sometimes you
even sit or lay on your bed to study or do your assignments. All of these examples that you just heard
promote time wasting and frustration which prohibits you from staying concentrated.
5. Though I've only touched on a couple, there are many more reasons for procrastinating such as
fear of anxiety or failure and even personnel or financial problems. So, you might be asking, how do
I know if I'm a procrastinator or not? Well, this brings me to my second point, symptoms of
procrastination. One of the worst aspects of procrastination is postponement. When one is
postponing an important task, it becomes very difficult to enjoy recreational activities. One is
socializing with friends or watching a film, and there is this nagging thought, "I should be
working." A dark cloud of guilt hangs over your head and dampens any pleasure you might be
extracting from the distractions of the moment. So, by not getting things done in a reasonably and
timely manner, or not done at all, precious opportunities have been lost.
6. Another symptom of procrastination is stress. What this is, is the way you react physically,
mentally, and emotionally to the various conditions, changes, and demands in

Persuasive Essay About Procrastination
Have any of you ever procrastinated before? If the answer was yes, you would not be the only one.
We all procrastinate from time to time. Statistics showed that procrastination affects over 20 percent
of the population, and 85 to 95 percent of students have problems associated with procrastination.
All the time, not doing the important task when we know we should can lead to anxiety, guilt,
stress, and even depression. In the reality, the activities we were doing while procrastinating are
never fun or relaxing because we know we should be doing work. So, procrastination is so horrific,
then why do we do it? Therefore, today, there are two subtopics procrastination that I want to talk
about which are the reasons why we procrastinate and some strategies on how to avoid it.
Now, let's talk about what makes us procrastinate. There are three broad categories that most of
typical reasons for procrastination could fall into which are resentment, fear of success, and fear of
failure. First, how does procrastination express resentment? Taking away autonomy from people who
think they are competent can cause procrastination due to dissatisfaction. For example, in the
workplace, you may procrastinate when you feel your job doesn't allow enough autonomy, when
you don't see the significance of your contribution, when you don't get much feedback about your
work, or when you feel frustrated, resentful, or bored with a task. Also, the feeling of gaining
control over the rules or

Speech On Procrastination
Procrastination, a college student's worst enemy, but closest friend. I've developed this habit where I
wait until the very last minute doing an assignment. It has gotten to the point where the clock is
ticking down to the last few minutes and I am sitting at my desk just now starting the assignment.
What do I do to get in this sticky situation you ask? I do everything but the thing I'm supposed to do.
Although I would have earned better grades from doing things days before it's due, I've mastered the
technique of putting it off till the last minute. It's a bad habit I picked up, but not one that i've tried
to quit.
RECEIVING THE ASSIGNMENT
Procrastinating comes in a few stages, the first is receiving the assignment. Receiving the
assignment and due date sparked the lies of "oh I'll start this as soon as I get home," or "I'm
actually going to get this done early so I don't have to worry about it." So i psych myself up to be
motivated to finish it early although it never works out that way.
The Professor of the class usually makes a comment of "This isn't something you can do the night
before it's due." Well obviously in college anything is possible, and they know that at least half of
the class is going to do it the night before its due anyways. As soon as the class gets over the paper
gets stuffed in my backpack and remains forgotten until I stumble upon it crumpled in the bottom of
the bag. Realistically, i do know about the assignment it's just filed in the part of

Reflection About Procrastination
Procrastination is a trait that "hides" in many of us. It is very easy to acquire but difficult to shake.
Though it is not good to have, I have learned that with hard work you can overcome this ailment.
Procrastination is never a good trait. It always seem to be something I couldn't avoid; however this
time I think it made my end product even better.
I had found myself in a room of three strangers; the only familiar face was that of my assistant. I
fumbled around trying to prepare my presentation, my assistant found my haste humorous. As I
finally got my presentation ready I thought back on how I got to this point. It was my senior project,
the last major assignment of my senior year in high school. I didn't take the easy road, waiting until
the last minute. Since then I have learned it is better to finish my projects on time because this
something I don't want to go through again. It was about two weeks earlier; I had just started the
assignment that we had the whole semester to complete. My laziness level was at an all–time high
but, reluctantly I knew I had to begin. I didn't even know where to start; all of my classmates
were miles ahead of me. "Better just start at the beginning" I thought to myself. So that's what I
did, at a point in the semester I was supposed to be nearly complete. Not to mention this
assignment was about 25% of my final grade. That 25% is something I needed as I didn't have the
best work ethic, this would either make or break my final grade.

Essay on The Art of Procrastination
The Art of Procrastination
It is three in the morning, and a haggard man puts the finishing touches on a presentation that he has
had a month to complete. A bright young boy scurries around the backyard collecting bugs for his
big science project due the next morning. A grown woman packs at two in the morning for her
six–thirty business trip. A man disappoints his wife with a gift of socks for Christmas, which was
all he could find on Christmas Eve. What is wrong with these people? Why do normal, intelligent
people fritter their time away; and wait till the last possible moment to do the necessary? In a word,
procrastination.
This phenomenon defies logic. Every other ugly duty is "gotten over with." We gulp down...show

It is said that when faced with an overwhelming situation, we either have to laugh or cry. Many of
us, on the other hand, just procrastinate. Daunting tasks tax all our faculties and need to be put
aside if we are to complete our other duties. Some problems can be too challenging or too far out
of our range of experience. If we started early and devoted ourselves to writing that speech,
studying for that exam, or firing that friend, we would have time for little else. The bills wouldn't
get paid, the kids wouldn't get fed, and the goldfish would go belly up. When asked to choose
between carrying out our necessary everyday roles and performing an overwhelming task, the
choice is easy: we do the small stuff.
When consequences are lose–lose, we are forced to choose the lesser of two evils. The choice
between two situations that both have potentially negative consequences is called an
avoidance–avoidance choice by psychologists. According to Rod Plotnic, "as the time to decide in
an avoidance–avoidance situation grows near, we often change our minds many times. Usually we
wait until the last minute before making the final decision and (then) deal with the disagreeable
consequences" (503). An avoidance–avoidance conflict is like having two crying babies to change
and only one diaper. After the unpleasant task is completed, we still have one crying baby with a
dirty diaper. On these occasions, procrastination is

Essays On Procrastination

  • 1. Many people believe that procrastination is derived completely from laziness but the culprit could be multiple things, including perfectionism. This can become a huge problem for perfectionists, especially perfectionist students. They most likely will overthink projects and put off getting started because they're afraid they won't be able to make them as perfect as they want them to be. Luckily this is a common issue among students and there are many different techniques to cope with it. Students can overcome procrastination due to perfectionism by setting S.M.A.R.T goals, creating detailed to–do lists, and by just getting started. Students can avoid procrastination by following the S.M.A.R.T. goal guidelines. All of your goals should be specific (s), measurable (m), achievable (a), realistic (r), and time–sensitive (t). A specific goal is clear, focused, concise, and well–defined ("Ensure Your Success"). Instead of a general goal like "I want to get my degree," turn that into something more specific like "I am going to get my Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from George Mason University" ("Ensure Your Success"). To make goals measurable, establish timelines and dates so you can measure your progress and stay on track to meet targets. Goals need to be achievable. Evaluate your own work ethic, see what you're willing to do, and shape your goal around that so you know it is something you're capable of doing. A goal needs to be realistic, something that you are Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Persuasive Essay On Procrastination Have you ever postponed something super important because you wanted to have fun on a Friday night? Convincing yourself "Oh, I'll just get it done tomorrow?" This action of putting off a task until the next day or a later time is called procrastination. Someone displaying procrastination would either be delaying their work for another job that they consider more important or distracting themselves with an activity that is more interesting. Many people believe that only disorganized or lazy people acquire or pick up this intrusive habit, but I disagree with this misconception. Productive people, too, occasionally lack the desire to get things done on time. Take for example myself; I have always struggled with this mannerism and even more...show more content... The prefrontal cortex is what makes an individual decide to engage in a task. With that in mind, putting work off makes it easier for the limbic system to dominate and give immediate pleasure feelings which the brain prefers. In other words, people begin to manipulate this perception and enjoy the short–term effects because it becomes more satisfying not to complete the task. This habit can start to control how or when we choose to tend to our responsibilities (Spencer). I recognize this feeling on a daily basis. For example, there was a day that I decided I was going to study in the library as I would hopefully be more productive in that setting. However, as soon as I sat down I began to fiddle with everything I could get my hands on. From obnoxiously twirling my pencil to watching time–consuming YouTube videos, I wasn 't very productive, and as a result, I had to cram until two AM for an exam the next day. I had always known thatprocrastination was satisfying, and now with this new information that confirms that it feeds off of my "good" feelings based on my body 's anatomy. Moving on, I then researched how to recognize why myself and others procrastinate in the first place. The first reason people procrastinate is that they "become" perfectionists. As procrastination becomes a more common act, it can also bring about the action of perfectionism. Harold Taylor does a fantastic job at identifying perfectionism, along with other reasons Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Procrastination Essay Procrastination Procrastination is the avoidance of doing a task that needs to be accomplished. Procrastination has a high potential for painful consequences. It may interfere with our personal or academic success. There are those of us who wait until the due date is a day away. I am not talking about making sure the money is in the bank. I am talking about putting it off because it is a tedious chore that we do not enjoy doing. Procrastination is a big problem for many, and one that can harm your career. Whether your procrastination causes you to arrive late at work or late for meetings, or keeps you from turning projects in on time, employers do not look positively upon it...show more content... If this is the case, begin at the beginning, with the first segment, and do it extraordinarily well. But only strive for perfection where it counts. The rest of the time, just do it. Remember, the next time you're procrastinating and can't seem to overcome it, stop and figure out why. Is the task even worth doing? If so, pick the appropriate solution based upon the root cause and you'll whittle away those piles in no time. Also procrastination can be stopped if you recognize self–defeating problems such as fear and anxiety, difficulty concentrating, poor time management, indecisiveness and perfectionism. Identify your own goals, strengths and weaknesses, values and priorities. Compare your actions with the values you feel you have. Are your values consistent with your actions? Discipline yourself to use time wisely: Set priorities. Study in small blocks instead of long time periods. For example, you will accomplish more if you study/work in 60 minute blocks and take frequent 10 minute breaks in between, than if you study/work for 2–3 hours straight, with no breaks. Reward yourself after you complete a task. Motivate yourself to study: Dwell on success, not on failure. Try to study in small groups. Break large assignments into small tasks. Keep a reminder schedule and checklist. Set realistic goals. Modify your environment: Eliminate or minimize noise / distraction. Ensure adequate lighting. Have necessary equipment at hand. • 4. Procrastination Essay Procrastination, putting things off until the last minute, can have serious consequences on a person's life. I fully agree with this statement because I have personally been affected by procrastination, waiting until the last minute will never do you any good. The main reason why procrastination isn't a great idea is because the amount of stress that comes along with doing things at the very last minute. When you get stressed you're more prone to making mistakes than if you did it a week before the project was due, the more mistakes the worse your grade will be. It is very hard to take care of the small detail when you're in such hurry just to complete the project. I remember back in high school waking up with droll stuck to my cheek it...show more content... So my terrible day did not end at school, when I got home my dad took my xbox from me until i was entirely done with my junior paper and until I brought my grade back up in history class. It didn't help matters that my history teacher was a stifler on doing test its worth forty percent of our grade. I have also procrastinated and made a really good grades too, but i may have gotten a good grade but i was still up super late and biting everyone's head off i came in contact with. I was as upset as a bull with a rubber band wrapped tightly around his testicles, being this upset comes with a price however i was mentally exhausted and a lot of people were upset at me. Sometimes procrastination can get you killed, this becomes true when you put off your medical condition or you put off having that surgery you need just because you don't want to take the time to do so. We as human beings tend to stray away from the thing we do not enjoy doing, that explains why I did not want to do my junior paper because writing isn't my most favorite thing to do. I honestly do not believe there is anything good that could come from procrastination, because the time you spent procrastinating cannot be given back to you it is considered wasted time. Also being a procrastinator can affect your reputation, nobody ever wants to be known as the person who cannot keep their word. So take a word from the wise procrastination is not Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Essay about Procrastination When you conquer procrastination, you will learn what it is, how it happens and finally experience success by not allowing it to happen again. Procrastination happens when a task is put off until a later time because the task is not desirable. There are several reasons procrastination happens including, confusion and misunderstanding exactly what needs done and how to do it. Procrastination causes lack of production, loss of time, and decrease in revenue. "Procrastination is one main cause of poor management, lost productivity, and lost revenue" (Ricci, 2004). Start with the most difficult tasks with a high energy level. As the energy level decreases, work on the easier tasks. If a task is too large to complete in one setting, break it down into several smaller tasks. Maintain discipline by not stopping until the task is complete. Allowing interruptions at specific times will reduce the number of distractions. Organization skills are depended on to achieve tasks easier. Creating a tidy work area will produce a positive environment. Brainstorming can be an incredible process and give the ability to list everything that a specific task requires. Imagine yourself doing the task and speak to yourself. Talking to yourself could result in a positive reaction and prevent procrastination from becoming a habit. Following through and force the completion of a task will fend falling into an unmanageable practice. Finding a motivational reward may help to become successful in beating procrastination. Receiving a reward at the end of small tasks will encourage the completion of the rest of the tasks, which will in turn accomplish goals. Mistakes are not bad they are a learning tool. • 6. Procrastination In College Essay "I have a ton of homework to do, but let's go hang out anyways!" This is an example of procrastination. Procrastinating is an action of delaying or postponing something. The problems of procrastinating effects a lot of students in college and can sometimes keep them from receiving better grades on their assignments. Procrastination affects around 90 percent of college students. (qtd in Hubbard) Procrastinating occurs when students feel lack of motivation, not having accountability for their "extra work," or just not understanding the assignment. Many college students are under ton of stress and tend to delay working on assignments to ease the stress. This habit results in procrastination. The biography was set up so that the reader had the same birthday as the author, for some participants. For other participants, the biography was setup so that the author's birthday was a few months away from theirs. After reading through the article and having to answer comprehensive questions, the students that had the same birthday as the author shown to have better understanding of the biography, as well as answering the questions correctly. The students who had further birthdays experienced negative feelings towards the classroom while the other students felt positive. (qtd in Markman) This study shows us that small things like having the same birthday as someone else gives people motivation. When working together with a few other people from your class to study for an exam, you can seek motivation from your peers. Your peers can guide you through your assignments as well as grow into a cohesive relationship if they allow it. This creates a warmer bond between students and helps them be comfortable with their environment, just like the students felt positive during their class period after reading a biography by someone with the same birthday as them. • 7. Procrastination Essays To procrastinate is to put off doing something out of casual carelessness or common laziness. It often needlessly postpones or delays events or objectives in your life which can effect others. Procrastination is almost like a drug in your life, because once you start doing it a little bit, it slowly adds up to a dependency that you will find to be common habit. Although this is what we all perceive procrastination to be bad, there are some benefits to it. It can have beneficial impact on how you take pressure, or how well you can act when time is limited. Procrastination is something that you don't naturally have an innate ability to do. It is often brought on by finding ways...show more content... But it will progressively add up in most cases, the student will start to not study like they know they should be, but rather they go and do something else that isn't as beneficial. After a while that people start to do this they think its not bad, even thought they are missing a few points here and there from lowered studies and completed work. But it can eventually lean up to skipping classes, which is one of the worse things you can do while in college, since generally there are no make ups for missed assignments and test. This can then hurt your grades entirely, and therefore may have you retake certain classes or take another year. This in turn can cause financial problems if it where to happen on multiple occasions, then can effect your later life on paying off the bills or charges that were made from it. Procrastination is not always a very bad thing though; there are some points in your life that it could prove to be a plus. If done enough you will be use to doing things last minute, which could possibly help you in your career with handling pressure when you boss tells you do something within a set amount of time. Also extended amounts of doing this bad habit could help you learn to take pressure better, as example when you have a huge paper due by the next morning and you need to keep your self calm or else it will show when your writing the paper. • 8. Persuasive Essay On Procrastination There are some things in this world that people tend to put off talking about for numerous reasons, whether it be because it brings them pain or they just don't want to. One of those things that people don't really talk about, as ironic as it sounds, is procrastination. There are numerous reasons why people procrastinate, but the real question is: is procrastination natural? In my opinion, yes it is. We all do it at some point in our lives despite how organized we are. This is true even according to professionals. Bill Knaus, a doctor of education and writer for Psychology Today who wrote "Why You Procrastinate and What to do About it," explains how procrastination comes naturally, "You may think that tomorrow will take care of itself, and so delay is okay," (Knaus, 2010). This is not to say that we all procrastinate on a regular basis, but rather we all do it at one point, intentional or unintentional. Sometimes it is a very little piece of procrastination, something you wouldn't have originally considered to be procrastination. For instance, putting off telling someone you have a crush on them. Sure this may not seem like a form of procrastination, but in reality, it is. Putting off anything is considered procrastination, even not telling someone you have a crush on them. So let's carry on talking about the "not telling your crush you like them" example. First, we must figure out why we do not tell them. Most common answers would typically include something along the lines of anxiety, fear of rejection, or getting punched in the face by your crush's boyfriend. What do all those things have in common? Well, to put it in short, they bring pain to yourself. No one wants to inflict pain on their self, so that is why we hold things like this off as best and for as long as we can. Therefore, since we do not want to inflict pain on ourselves, we pull away as a reflex, the same way you do when you touch something a bit too hot. As Phil Stutz, a psychiatrist, and Barry Michels, a psychotherapist, both authors of "The Real Reason We Procrastinate (and What to Do About It)" for a health online magazine called Greatist, implies, "Without realizing it, most of us instinctively retreat to a comfort zone and try our Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Argumentative Essay On Procrastination Procrastination is ignoring your responsibilities and avoiding them for no good reason. Experiencing procrastination can have a positive or negative reaction according to the amount of the behavior. The person that is procrastinating must first realize that they have a problem in order to find ways to overcome procrastination because they are putting their health, family and job at risk. Twenty percent of people realize they are procrastinators which in the end becomes a lifestyle. There are various reasons why people procrastinate. People procrastinate because they are afraid to fail, they have poor time management, they avoid things that seem difficult or they feel depressed or they feel guilty. Some people believe that other procrastinate out of laziness or lack of discipline, but I know there are perfectionists that often procrastinate as well. For example, a perfectionist may put off writing a paper until the night before it is due and then they will have an excuse saying, "I restarted because I didn't like what I had written.". Another example is that some philosophers and scientists, such that Aristotle questioned if time even exists, and Einstein believed that time was a muddle in which the past, present and future were only illusions. First, a person must be honest with themselves and recognize that they are procrastinating. After coming to the realization that one is a procrastinator, make a to do list with low priority tasks; work out why you procrastinate, by Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Procrastination Essay I have many flaws, one of which being procrastination. Procrastination has been a flaw of mine since I was three years old just learning to tie my shoe. When my dad told me that we were going to learn to tie my shoes today I would says something like, "I'm Hungry" or "I don't feel too good today", and I would make these excuses up all day until it was bedtime so by then it was too late to tie my shoes. Now just like avoiding and putting off tying my shoes I also put off my bedtime. As soon as my mom or dad turned off my bedroom light I would tell them that I needed a drink, I was hungry, or the most famous one was I had to go to the bathroom. I would sit in the bathroom for up to 15 minutes just avoiding going to bed. This procrastination...show more content... Also when my mom or dad asks me to dishes I go immediately so then I don't have a chance to procrastinate and so it's done and over with. Gossiping is another flaw that I struggle with. No matter how hard I try not to it always seems to happen anyway. Whether it's talking about someone behind their back good or bad or if it's sharing someone else's news or secrets when they told me not to. I will be sitting at my desk and if someone says something that I know anything about then I immediately chimed in even if it's not my place too. Another way is when someone comes to me and starts telling me something about someone I don't stop them. I let them sit there and gossip to me because for some reason I feel that I have to, but I don't. Gossiping is a choice that I can't seem to stop myself from making and it makes me sick. When I gossip and then realize that's what I'm doing it brings me down to know that it's such a bad habit that I didn't even realize what I was doing. As soon as I hear it I don't even think about whether this person should be telling me this or not I just listen, and what's even worse is when I take that information and share it with someone else. I don't mean to do this but like I said it is such a bad habit that I do it subconsciously. My last flaw that I'm going to talk about are my insecurities, Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 12. Cause and Effect -- Procrastination Essay Procrastination "I'll stop procrastinating...Tomorrow." This is a mindset that is possessed by a majority of students today. Although putting off writing that English paper until the night before it is due may not seem like a big deal, it has many harmful effects. In fact, what better topic is there for that English paper? Very few are spared from the epidemic known asprocrastination. Even less overcome this issue. In order to successfully defeat procrastination, we must first understand it. According to the Merriam–Webster dictionary, to procrastinate is "to put off intentionally the doing of something that should be done." Another way of putting it is "to wait until the last minute." Procrastination is a very bad habit. Even though...show more content... With that being said, being overwhelmed certainly does not help. This can lead to forgetting important details and due dates. Another factor that causes procrastination is fear. Fear is a very powerful emotion. Whenever someone is faced with a difficult task, they can become overran by the fear of not being able to complete it. People who succumb to this are setting themselves up for failure. Whenever someone feels as if they are going to fail, they tend to postpone the task for as long as possible. This means that they often try to avoid the task all together until completion is absolutely necessary. In doing so, the number of tasks that need to be done increases. However, the time required to complete them does not. Perfectionism can also lead to procrastination. This is because a person is setting a goal for themselves that is unreachable. Whenever these goals are not met, they are a huge source of discouragement even though they couldn't have been completed in the first place. This will result in lower productivity. From here, it is nothing but a downward spiral. One must realize that no one can write the perfect English paper. Instead of trying to accomplish this, we should focus our time and effort on writing the best paper according to our personal abilities. However, no one should be satisfied with less than what can be achieved. All of these factors lead to the lack of motivation. Personally, I Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Thesis About Procrastination People often relate procrastination to lazy people, adamantly believing that it leads to inevitable failure. With Countless of articles , books & guides on how to get over procrastination , The Author John Rampton in his article "Procrastination or Contemplation?" chose to spark off a debate by issuing his ideas on how procrastination can actually be fruitful. Rampton states the bright side of procrastination and how it can lead to success rather than the common negative myths about this issue. As much as I was convinced by Mr.Rampton's ideas, I still refuse to believe in them. Mr. Rampton, you give me no guarantees. In this article John Rampton listed some of the positive aspects of procrastination, although some of them were both logical and relatable but the non–credibility of the sources weakened them & made them less convincible. What made his article engaging is that the ideas he introduced were relatable to the majority. As a procrastinator myself , i found his definition of Procrastination quite interesting where he said "procrastination is using fear as a motivator" , its actually true that we finish some tasks on time only out of fear. Besides, the reasons we delay doing a certain task is usually because it's either a boring task or a stressful one , which is what the author stated to let readers...show more content... • 14. A British actor, Christopher Parker once said, "Procrastination is like a credit card: it's a lot of fun until you get the bill." This statement can be easily related to myself, being a university student, unfortunately, at both of these levels (have you ever heard of a financially stable student?). My personal reflection will mainly be focusing on the first part of this statement. My most significant study skill I need to improve on is declining the amount I spend procrastinating and learning to better my time management skills. A fear I have with this approach to studying is how this could negatively affect my professional work towards the future. Prior to beginning my career, I would like to have conquered my time management deficiencies. MY GOAL: I will overcome my procrastination habits by a maximum of 1 year, as that is when I will start a new school year, with a better approach to my learning. During that one year, I will achieve this goal by setting scheduled studying sessions, I can create new habits and maintain a checklist of theses sessions so that I am able to visualize my progress. I also feel that rewarding myself with an appropriate timed breaks in–between my scheduled study sessions will also keep my interests high in terms of what is being studied. This is a good learning goal for me because I feel like one thing I lack most when I'm studying, mainly for courses that are challenging in their nature, is motivation. With the use of a calendar, I am able to mark down due dates for assignments and tests, I have come to a realization that this needs to be taken one step further. By creating a checklist, I will be able to visually see my progress and can see how I am preforming with my short–term goals, and it is also evident that in completion of these goals it will instil a sense of pride that comes from achievement. With this I am hoping that it creates a continuous cycle of motivation, as well as pride so that I view studying from a more positive outlook. ACTION STEPS: One of my favourite examples in the online sessions was Jacob's story through procrastination. Being a university student, I can relate with his lifestyle. My grades have improved from first year, but I feel like if learn Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 16. Procrastination Essay 1. What am I talking about? I am the thief of productiveness and time. I sound simple, but in fact I'm quite complex. I am a strange phenomenon. My purpose seems to make my life more pleasant, but instead it almost always adds stress, disorganization, and frequent failure. I want to achieve some outcome, usually something myself and others can value and respect; "I've got to start." I delay briefly thinking of real and imagined advantages of starting to change later; "I will do it tomorrow." 2. Good evening gentlemen. My name is Bobby Hurley. Your environment is distracting and noisy. You keep running back and forth for equipment such as pencils, erasers, dictionaries, and etc. Your desk is cluttered and unorganized and sometimes you even sit or lay on your bed to study or do your assignments. All of these examples that you just heard promote time wasting and frustration which prohibits you from staying concentrated. 5. Though I've only touched on a couple, there are many more reasons for procrastinating such as fear of anxiety or failure and even personnel or financial problems. So, you might be asking, how do I know if I'm a procrastinator or not? Well, this brings me to my second point, symptoms of procrastination. One of the worst aspects of procrastination is postponement. When one is postponing an important task, it becomes very difficult to enjoy recreational activities. One is socializing with friends or watching a film, and there is this nagging thought, "I should be working." A dark cloud of guilt hangs over your head and dampens any pleasure you might be extracting from the distractions of the moment. So, by not getting things done in a reasonably and timely manner, or not done at all, precious opportunities have been lost. 6. Another symptom of procrastination is stress. What this is, is the way you react physically, mentally, and emotionally to the various conditions, changes, and demands in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Persuasive Essay About Procrastination Have any of you ever procrastinated before? If the answer was yes, you would not be the only one. We all procrastinate from time to time. Statistics showed that procrastination affects over 20 percent of the population, and 85 to 95 percent of students have problems associated with procrastination. All the time, not doing the important task when we know we should can lead to anxiety, guilt, stress, and even depression. In the reality, the activities we were doing while procrastinating are never fun or relaxing because we know we should be doing work. So, procrastination is so horrific, then why do we do it? Therefore, today, there are two subtopics procrastination that I want to talk about which are the reasons why we procrastinate and some strategies on how to avoid it. Now, let's talk about what makes us procrastinate. There are three broad categories that most of typical reasons for procrastination could fall into which are resentment, fear of success, and fear of failure. First, how does procrastination express resentment? Taking away autonomy from people who think they are competent can cause procrastination due to dissatisfaction. For example, in the workplace, you may procrastinate when you feel your job doesn't allow enough autonomy, when you don't see the significance of your contribution, when you don't get much feedback about your work, or when you feel frustrated, resentful, or bored with a task. Also, the feeling of gaining control over the rules or Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Speech On Procrastination Procrastination, a college student's worst enemy, but closest friend. I've developed this habit where I wait until the very last minute doing an assignment. It has gotten to the point where the clock is ticking down to the last few minutes and I am sitting at my desk just now starting the assignment. What do I do to get in this sticky situation you ask? I do everything but the thing I'm supposed to do. Although I would have earned better grades from doing things days before it's due, I've mastered the technique of putting it off till the last minute. It's a bad habit I picked up, but not one that i've tried to quit. RECEIVING THE ASSIGNMENT Procrastinating comes in a few stages, the first is receiving the assignment. Receiving the assignment and due date sparked the lies of "oh I'll start this as soon as I get home," or "I'm actually going to get this done early so I don't have to worry about it." So i psych myself up to be motivated to finish it early although it never works out that way. The Professor of the class usually makes a comment of "This isn't something you can do the night before it's due." Well obviously in college anything is possible, and they know that at least half of the class is going to do it the night before its due anyways. As soon as the class gets over the paper gets stuffed in my backpack and remains forgotten until I stumble upon it crumpled in the bottom of the bag. Realistically, i do know about the assignment it's just filed in the part of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Reflection About Procrastination Procrastination is a trait that "hides" in many of us. It is very easy to acquire but difficult to shake. Though it is not good to have, I have learned that with hard work you can overcome this ailment. Procrastination is never a good trait. It always seem to be something I couldn't avoid; however this time I think it made my end product even better. I had found myself in a room of three strangers; the only familiar face was that of my assistant. I fumbled around trying to prepare my presentation, my assistant found my haste humorous. As I finally got my presentation ready I thought back on how I got to this point. It was my senior project, the last major assignment of my senior year in high school. I didn't take the easy road, waiting until the last minute. Since then I have learned it is better to finish my projects on time because this something I don't want to go through again. It was about two weeks earlier; I had just started the assignment that we had the whole semester to complete. My laziness level was at an all–time high but, reluctantly I knew I had to begin. I didn't even know where to start; all of my classmates were miles ahead of me. "Better just start at the beginning" I thought to myself. So that's what I did, at a point in the semester I was supposed to be nearly complete. Not to mention this assignment was about 25% of my final grade. That 25% is something I needed as I didn't have the best work ethic, this would either make or break my final grade. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. Essay on The Art of Procrastination The Art of Procrastination It is three in the morning, and a haggard man puts the finishing touches on a presentation that he has had a month to complete. A bright young boy scurries around the backyard collecting bugs for his big science project due the next morning. A grown woman packs at two in the morning for her six–thirty business trip. A man disappoints his wife with a gift of socks for Christmas, which was all he could find on Christmas Eve. What is wrong with these people? Why do normal, intelligent people fritter their time away; and wait till the last possible moment to do the necessary? In a word, procrastination. This phenomenon defies logic. Every other ugly duty is "gotten over with." We gulp down...show more content... It is said that when faced with an overwhelming situation, we either have to laugh or cry. Many of us, on the other hand, just procrastinate. Daunting tasks tax all our faculties and need to be put aside if we are to complete our other duties. Some problems can be too challenging or too far out of our range of experience. If we started early and devoted ourselves to writing that speech, studying for that exam, or firing that friend, we would have time for little else. The bills wouldn't get paid, the kids wouldn't get fed, and the goldfish would go belly up. When asked to choose between carrying out our necessary everyday roles and performing an overwhelming task, the choice is easy: we do the small stuff. When consequences are lose–lose, we are forced to choose the lesser of two evils. The choice between two situations that both have potentially negative consequences is called an avoidance–avoidance choice by psychologists. According to Rod Plotnic, "as the time to decide in an avoidance–avoidance situation grows near, we often change our minds many times. Usually we wait until the last minute before making the final decision and (then) deal with the disagreeable consequences" (503). An avoidance–avoidance conflict is like having two crying babies to change and only one diaper. After the unpleasant task is completed, we still have one crying baby with a dirty diaper. On these occasions, procrastination is Get more content on HelpWriting.net
