Inventor: John B. Curtis
Year Invented: 1848
Curtis came up with the idea of how to use spruce gum
and sell it as a chewing gum. John B. Curtis and his
father experimented the first manufacture of chewing
gum sticks.
In the late 19th century there was big competition on
USA chewing gum market so Curtis added paraffin
gums to their product line. The addition of sugar
produced the gum with a sweet taste.
His family then became very wealthy.

M&M’s
Inventor: Forrest Edward Mars
Year Invented: 1941
Mars observed soldiers eating chocolate pellets with a
hard shell during the Spanish Civil War and there he got
the motto “Melt in your mouth, not your hands”.
When his father died, Mars took over the family
business, Mars, Inc, merging it with his own company in
1964.
He died at age 95 having amassed a fortune of $4
billion.

4. Inventor: Leo Hirshfield
 Year Invented: 1896
 Tootsie Rolls is named after Leo’s five year old daughter
whose nickname was “Tootsie”. Leo set out to create a
chocolate that wouldn’t melt easily and eventually came

up with the artificial “chocolate” candy the tootsie roll.

This ability to not melt easily and to use artificial
ingredients that weren’t being rationed during war times
proved a huge boon for the company as it eventually
began being included in all soldier’s rations during
WWII. The low price of the artificial ingredients also
made it a popular treat during the depression along with
the tootsie pop.

Inventor: Harry Burnett "H. B." Reese
Year Invented: 1928
Harry enjoyed a relatively prosperous job on a dairy
farm owned by The Hershey Company until the farm
was closed by Hershey's. Not long after moving his
family to Pennsylvania, Reese moved back, again
working for Hershey's. Reese began experimenting
with candies in his basement.
By 1923 he created the H. B. Reese Candy Company.
By 1928, H. B. and Blanche had sixteen children. That
same year, H. B. Reese invented Reese’s Peanut
Butter Cups. H.B. Reese initially sold his many candies
on consignment to retail stores, but by 1935 he was a
success and was able to burn all his mortgages.
