2. Smiley
• The State Mutual Life Assurance Company of Worcester purchased
Guarantee Mutual Company of Ohio.
• In an attempt to solve low employee morale, Harvey Ball was employed in
1963 as a freelance artist to create a smiley face to be used on buttons,
desk cards, and posters.
• In less than ten minutes the smiley face was complete.
• He was paid just $45for the design.
4. Diesel Engine
• It was invented in the 1890s by a German engineer
Rudolf Diesel, and the engine was named after him.
• The diesel engine was designed to improve the
efficiency of internal combustion engines so that more
distance can be traveled.
• Rudolf Diesel committed suicide in 1913 because
he didn't think his invention would be successful.
6. Hashtag
• A hashtag is a user-generated tagging which makes it possible for others to
easily find messages with a specific theme or content.
• The use of hashtags was first proposed by Chris Messina in a 2007.
• First hash tag was "thing for nerds“ in twitter.
• Messina made no attempt to copyright the use.
• He has been credited as the godfather of the hashtag.
8. ICE-CREAM
• A kind of ice-cream was invented in China about 200 BC when a milk and rice mixture
was frozen by packing it into snow.
• An ice-cream-like food was first eaten in China in 618-97AD.
• King Tang of Shang, had 94 ice men who helped to make a dish of buffalo milk, flour
and camphor.
• "Cream Ice," as it was called, appeared regularly at the table of Charles I during the 17th
century.
• It wasn't until 1660 that ice cream was made available to the general public.
10. Barbie Doll
• The Bild Lilli doll was a German fashion doll launched on August
12(1955 and -1964).
• Its design was based on the comic-strip character Lilli in German
tabloid newspaper Bild.
• The Lilli doll was the inspiration for Mattel co-founder Ruth
Handler's creation of the Barbie doll and launched in March 1959.
