What are your thoughts and feelings as you read this extract? Give reasons for what you
say, and remember to support your answer with words and phrases from the extract. [10]

Focus on the key words YOUR THOUGHTS and FEELINGS.
Meet the assessment objectives which are tested in the extract question:
AO1Respond to texts critically and imaginatively giving your own, well considered thoughts and feelings
about the things Willy Russell is trying to get you to think about and feel from this extract. Select 4 or 5
key quotations and discuss them in detail evaluating their effect upon you as the reader and the
audience in a theatre. Work in detail exploring in depth. More than one idea about each quoatation will
earn you more marks than a simple statement and then writing about something else.
AO2 Explain how language, structure and form contribute to writers' presentationof ideas, themes and
          settings :
LANGUAGE : Write about the difference in language and dialect used by Mickey and Edward. What
does this make you think about the characters? How does the language and the stage directions show
the differences and similarities between these two characters?
STRUCTURE : Where does this extract happen in the play? Briefly, what came before it and what
follows this section? How does Russell use dramatic irony in this section? What is the effect on you as
          the audience?
FORM :What is the impact of the humour at this pivotal event in the play? How and why does Russell
use adult actors to portray the children at this stage of the play and what does this add to the dramatic
          quality of this section?

This is a 20 minute task for (10) marks. Divide your time wisely 5 minutes per assessment focus.
