The southeastern United States receives substantially more precipitation than the Southwest. Why? Warm ocean water off the East Coast warms the air and produces summer-time storms. Cool water along the coast of California cause the air to be drier and more stable. The Atlantic High advects warm humid air northward into the US Southeast. All of these make the Southwest arid, compared to the Southeast. None of these help explain why the Southwest is arid, compared to the Southeast..

Cool water along the coast of California cause the air to be drier and more stable. The Atlantic High advects warm humid air northward into the US Southeast. All of these make the Southwest arid, compared to the Southeast. None of these help explain why the Southwest is arid, compared to the Southeast.
