EVALUATION QUESTION 4:
HOW DID YOU USE NEW MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES IN THE
CONSTRUCTION AND RESEARCH, PLANNING AND
EVALUATION STAGES?
NEW MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES
RESEARCH-PLANNING-EVALUATING
 I was assigned the task of creating 3 products, 2 printed and one moving image product. All stages of
pre-production, production and post-production needed to be carefully research and planned to
achieve the standard of product that I desired and to reach the demands of my product brief and to
successfully meet the conventions of my chosen genre of teen drama/comedy. Using my new media
technology’s was a vital option during the process of my A2 level advanced production developments as
it enabled me to gain knowledge as well as giving my the ability to access multiple platforms from the
ease of web 2.0. A clear example of this is research online, on sites such as film mag, which allowed me
to access the differing film magazines, and posters. Without this I would be unsure on how to gain the
knowledge of conventions for my trailers and ancillary products which were vital for my success in my
products. I also used other technological based platforms through the process of the planning,
construction, and evaluation stages of my A2 Level advanced production such as survey monkey, prezi,
social media and power-point.

social mediaand power-point.
RESEARCH AND PLANNING
 Research was an extremely important part of the development stages of my product. To
decide the the qualities if my trailer and genre I used IMBD to see the conventions of the
genres that I wanted to base my trailer around. I looked into the conventions of dramatic
films, romantic films and teen-comedy films to gather a sense what I would include in my
film. As well as using IMBD, I also took to the search engine Google to research even more
details of the genres of films and their trailers. From this, I learn about Todorov’s Theory of
Equilibrium as well as specific details about the genre I wished to work with. Once the
basic of my genre was established I used the digital platform of YOUTUBE to gather an
understanding of existing products such as Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging, which fit
into the teen drama genre, allowing me to analyse conventional components regarding;
camera wok, editing, mise-en-scene, sound, characters etc. I also used survey monkey to
address my target audience, asking them specific questions which related to the genre
that I was looking into. It helped inform my about my decisions that I should be making
during the production stages of my work. I then distributed this survey through my
personal contacts, Facebook and to my social media sites as it gives me a clear idea of
what my target demographic would like to see in regards to my film trailer, as the vast
majority of my friend on these social accounts are within the age demographic of
teenagers or young adults. Finally, issued the website BLOGGER to document the process
of my research and work, playing a vital role in the accessibility of all my research as
having all of my work on this digital platform allowed me find what I needed easily. There
were also many more digital technologies involved in the research and planning stages of
my production.
RESEARCH PLATFORM: SURVEY MONKEY
 Survey monkey is an online survey development cloud-based software founded in
1999 by Ryan Finley, It provides free, customisable surveys including data analysis,
sample selection, bias elimination and data representation tools. In addition to
providing free and paid plans for individual users, they also offer larger scale
enterprise options for companies interested in data analysis, brand management
and consumer-focuses marketing. Survey monkey provides data collection, analysis,
brand management and marketing for Facebook, virgin America, Samsung and
many other large companies across the world.
 As of 2015, it had over 25 million users, receiving 90 million survey responses a
month allowing the company to be ranked number 6 on the forbs colour 100 list.
"We're the world's leading provider of web-based survey solutions, trusted by
millions of companies, organisations and individuals alike to gather the insights
they need to make more informed decisions". - Survey Monkey.
 Survey monkey provided me a brilliant platform to ask a vast audience about many
aspects of this A2 advanced level work, including aspects of my trailer and ancillary
products. It made distributing my survey easily across social media sites such as
Facebook and Twitter and also enabling embedding the survey onto websites such
as blogger simple. This post was titled ‘Genre survey” giving the viewers of my blog
an easily accessible post to answer my survey through my blog, rather then having
to follow a link.
RESEARCH PLATFORMS: IMDB
 IMDb, also known as the internet movie database, is an online database of information
related to world films, televisions programs, home videos and video games, including
details on their cast, production crew, personnel and fiction character biographies,
plot summaries, trivia and fan reviews and ratings, which started in 1999 as a hobby
project by an international group of movie and TV fans, now being one of the biggest
platforms fro movie and TV lovers. An additional fan feature, message boards, was
abandoned in February, 2017 allowing personal reviews on be added to the data. This
is owned and operated by IMDB.com inc, a subsidiary of Amazon. As of December
2017, IMDB has approximately 4.7 million titles and 8.3 million personalities in its
database, as well as 83 million registered users. Its movie and talent pages are
accessible to all users, but a registration process is necessary to contribute information
to the site, with most of the database being contributed by volunteer contributors.
 By using IMDb as a free and user friendly platform, I was able to access information
about certain genre’s and what types of films are made within this genre. Additionally,
I was also able to view the promotional posters, DVD covers, actual moving image
footage of films giving me an insight to the feel of a movie and its genre, allowing me
to see the colour schemes, typography, characters and even the feature article
photograph shots and layouts of the protagonists. IMBD was a very useful source of
research to inform the development of all three products.
RESEARCH PLATFORM: SOCIAL MEDIA
 Google: Google is an American multinational technology company which focuses in
on the internet-related services and products that include online advertising
technologies, cloud services, hardware and software and the search bar. Googles
easily accessible ’search bar; allowed me to quickly research knowledge and facts,
such as in the beginning of the project while researching the ‘Theory of Equilibrium’. I
also used it to research the genres, access other digital platforms such as twitter,
Facebook and YouTube giving me a vast platform to look into my work.
 Facebook: This is a free social networking site used by millions across the globe. It
allows its users to create a free profile, upload photos and video, send messages,
contact friends, family and colleagues across the world. Facebook gave me the ability
to contact/reach my target demographic and see what they would like in a film. This
was a very effective way of reaching many people at once and being able to gain a
quick response.
 Twitter: Twitter is a social media site/app for friends, family, co-workers and
celebrities to communicate and connect through quick exchange within only 140
characters People post tweets to express emotions, photos, videos links, polls etc.
Twitter allowed my to access my demographic quickly while the retweet button was a
very effective way to gain multiple responses.
RESEARCH PLATFORM: YOUTUBE
 To gather information and analyse real media texts such as trailers I used YouTube as
this was the perfect platform to gather information on, as it is a widely used site
meaning all trailers for films are put on here for a broad response across the globe.
 Using YouTube I analysed short trailers; ‘Wild Child’ and ‘The Edge of Seventeen’, both
in the teen comedy genre. This was an efficient, easy and effective way to access this
type of research material for my own work. Also working as a platform to upload my
final finished product, again, acting as a platform to share my work.
 By being bale to easily reach all of these trailers the research stage was extremely
smooth, and was significantly improved by the accessibility of real media texts
allowing me to look in depth into conventions, narrative, mise-en-scene, sound,
lighting, camera angles etc. I was able to pick out similarities and differences which
later informed me on my own trailer, as I could see the additions I needed to include
for a successful trailer in the teen comedy genre.
CONSTRUCTION PHASE
 Within the construction process of my three products, film poster, film magazine
and trailer, digital technology was very important, just as much so as the research
and planning phase. This focused on the use of the digital software rather then the
platforms which can be found easily due to web 2.0.
 I used adobe premier elements to edit my trailer together using raw footage shot on
a cannon DSLR 100. I also used adobe photo-shop elements too edit my ancillary
products ; film magazine front cover and film poster.
 Both of these software platforms enabled me to easily edit my trailer and my
products and also tailor my products to the genre that I have chosen as they were
very easy to use giving me the ability to put the knowledge gained from my
research and planning phase into my products to get a successful overall outcome.
I was able to follow real media conventions in both my digital print products and in
my moving image trailer due to the access to these software platforms.
CONSTRUCTION: ADOBE ELEMENTS
 Adobe elements was one of the digital software platforms which I used o make my trailer. It is a video software
application in which I upload raw footage onto my computer and edit it directly from these programs. From this,
I was able to edit my trailer to include still images, video clips, sound effects titles, music and voice overs, giving
effects and smooth transitions to all of these elements including the basic colour correct and video
enhancements which mimics the effect of real media texts.
 Elements was a vital part of this process as it gave me the ability to use all of my raw footage which I shot over a
period of time to create my trailer allowing all of this to be pieced together and I was also bale to add effects in
post production.
 It also gave me the ability to add complex effects to my trailer, such as multiple sounds effects, music and voice-
overs which enabled me to set my genre firmly throughout my trailer. The use of sound was a key round in
giving my trailer a comical tone. I got my tracks from YouTube (emailing the record company to asking to gain
the rights to use this music). I used multiple tracks throughout my trailer to show the journey that my characters
go through and set their personalities deeply in the trailer. The first is a very upbeat, fun and quirky piece setting
my comical tone right from the beginning of my trailer introducing the original equilibrium to the trailer. I
continued to use fun music, dipping in and out of the voice overs and dialogue to give a young feel to the trailer
which is often found in many real media texts. For my voice overs, I used a zoom H5 to record, giving a clear
crisp feel to the sound allowing my trailer to have a narrative to it, making sense to the audience. I had to edit
this together to fit with these tracks as well as the footage in order to have a strong sense of continuity within
my trailer.
CONSTRUCTION PHASE: PHOTOSHOP
 Photoshop was a crucial part of my products as it allowed me to
complete both my film poster and magazine front cover which I
needed to complete my project.
 Elements Photoshop is a sister program of the full Photoshop
software. It allowed me access to every single tool that I needed, such
as the eraser, colour correction and eraser without being too
complicated to use. This made it easy to get used to with very little
Photoshop experience and also give an effect finished product.
 Additionally, the magnetic lasso tool was extremely helpful in my
construction of my products as it removed background easily while
connecting to the sections of the image that I wanted to keep. An
example is the main picture for my trailer poster, I used the magnetic
lasso tool and the eraser together to gain a smooth edge around my
image of my main protagonist.
EQUIPMENT
 For the construction of my trailer and other ancillary products I used many different parts of equipment. I used
a cannon DSLE 100 camera for both the filming of my footage and also my photos. This was essential in taking
high quality resolution moving image as well as still images. I paired the camera with a tripod to get a very still
and stable image, without this, I would have a very shaky and I would not have been able to take the highest
quality pictures. To record voice overs within my trailer, I used a zoom H5 recorder to get my voiceovers clear
and crisp giving a professional high quality feel.
 During my photoshoot I used two soft boxes to gain an even look to my star while the bright like replicates
real media products. Additionally, I also used a green screen to work as a plain back ground which gave me an
easy colour to remove during post production.
EVALUATION: DIGITAL DOCUMENTATION/ PRESENTATION
 Blogger, Prezi, YouTube and Abobe.
 During my evaluation stage, technical platforms allowed me to document my work effectively.
 To present my work I used Prezi and Power-point. Prezi is a website made available due to web 2.0 as it
is a digital platform created so that users can also create presentations which have smooth transitions
and cool effects. Power point is a software by Microsoft which creates a slide show to display
information quickly and effectively. Both of these were useful in my presentation of all stage within my
project.
 To document all of my work, I used blogger to upload posts on my research, development, planning,
final products and evaluation as it is an effect way to document all of my work and keeping it all in one
place allowingme to be organised throughout the entire process.

Question 4 Evaluation

  • 1. EVALUATION QUESTION 4: HOW DID YOU USE NEW MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES IN THE CONSTRUCTION AND RESEARCH, PLANNING AND EVALUATION STAGES?
  • 2. NEW MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES RESEARCH-PLANNING-EVALUATING  I was assigned the task of creating 3 products, 2 printed and one moving image product. All stages of pre-production, production and post-production needed to be carefully research and planned to achieve the standard of product that I desired and to reach the demands of my product brief and to successfully meet the conventions of my chosen genre of teen drama/comedy. Using my new media technology’s was a vital option during the process of my A2 level advanced production developments as it enabled me to gain knowledge as well as giving my the ability to access multiple platforms from the ease of web 2.0. A clear example of this is research online, on sites such as film mag, which allowed me to access the differing film magazines, and posters. Without this I would be unsure on how to gain the knowledge of conventions for my trailers and ancillary products which were vital for my success in my products. I also used other technological based platforms through the process of the planning, construction, and evaluation stages of my A2 Level advanced production such as survey monkey, prezi, social media and power-point. • 3. RESEARCH AND PLANNING  Research was an extremely important part of the development stages of my product. To decide the the qualities if my trailer and genre I used IMBD to see the conventions of the genres that I wanted to base my trailer around. I looked into the conventions of dramatic films, romantic films and teen-comedy films to gather a sense what I would include in my film. As well as using IMBD, I also took to the search engine Google to research even more details of the genres of films and their trailers. From this, I learn about Todorov’s Theory of Equilibrium as well as specific details about the genre I wished to work with. Once the basic of my genre was established I used the digital platform of YOUTUBE to gather an understanding of existing products such as Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging, which fit into the teen drama genre, allowing me to analyse conventional components regarding; camera wok, editing, mise-en-scene, sound, characters etc. I also used survey monkey to address my target audience, asking them specific questions which related to the genre that I was looking into. It helped inform my about my decisions that I should be making during the production stages of my work. I then distributed this survey through my personal contacts, Facebook and to my social media sites as it gives me a clear idea of what my target demographic would like to see in regards to my film trailer, as the vast majority of my friend on these social accounts are within the age demographic of teenagers or young adults. Finally, issued the website BLOGGER to document the process of my research and work, playing a vital role in the accessibility of all my research as having all of my work on this digital platform allowed me find what I needed easily. There were also many more digital technologies involved in the research and planning stages of my production.

"We're the world's leading provider of web-based survey solutions, trusted by millions of companies, organisations and individuals alike to gather the insights they need to make more informed decisions". - Survey Monkey.  Survey monkey provided me a brilliant platform to ask a vast audience about many aspects of this A2 advanced level work, including aspects of my trailer and ancillary products. It made distributing my survey easily across social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter and also enabling embedding the survey onto websites such as blogger simple. This post was titled ‘Genre survey” giving the viewers of my blog an easily accessible post to answer my survey through my blog, rather then having to follow a link.
  • 5. RESEARCH PLATFORMS: IMDB  IMDb, also known as the internet movie database, is an online database of information related to world films, televisions programs, home videos and video games, including details on their cast, production crew, personnel and fiction character biographies, plot summaries, trivia and fan reviews and ratings, which started in 1999 as a hobby project by an international group of movie and TV fans, now being one of the biggest platforms fro movie and TV lovers. An additional fan feature, message boards, was abandoned in February, 2017 allowing personal reviews on be added to the data. This is owned and operated by IMDB.com inc, a subsidiary of Amazon. As of December 2017, IMDB has approximately 4.7 million titles and 8.3 million personalities in its database, as well as 83 million registered users. Its movie and talent pages are accessible to all users, but a registration process is necessary to contribute information to the site, with most of the database being contributed by volunteer contributors.  By using IMDb as a free and user friendly platform, I was able to access information about certain genre’s and what types of films are made within this genre. Additionally, I was also able to view the promotional posters, DVD covers, actual moving image footage of films giving me an insight to the feel of a movie and its genre, allowing me to see the colour schemes, typography, characters and even the feature article photograph shots and layouts of the protagonists. IMBD was a very useful source of research to inform the development of all three products.
  • 6. RESEARCH PLATFORM: SOCIAL MEDIA  Google: Google is an American multinational technology company which focuses in on the internet-related services and products that include online advertising technologies, cloud services, hardware and software and the search bar. Googles easily accessible ’search bar; allowed me to quickly research knowledge and facts, such as in the beginning of the project while researching the ‘Theory of Equilibrium’. I also used it to research the genres, access other digital platforms such as twitter, Facebook and YouTube giving me a vast platform to look into my work.  Facebook: This is a free social networking site used by millions across the globe. It allows its users to create a free profile, upload photos and video, send messages, contact friends, family and colleagues across the world. Facebook gave me the ability to contact/reach my target demographic and see what they would like in a film. This was a very effective way of reaching many people at once and being able to gain a quick response.  Twitter: Twitter is a social media site/app for friends, family, co-workers and celebrities to communicate and connect through quick exchange within only 140 characters People post tweets to express emotions, photos, videos links, polls etc. Twitter allowed my to access my demographic quickly while the retweet button was a very effective way to gain multiple responses.
  • 7. RESEARCH PLATFORM: YOUTUBE  To gather information and analyse real media texts such as trailers I used YouTube as this was the perfect platform to gather information on, as it is a widely used site meaning all trailers for films are put on here for a broad response across the globe.  Using YouTube I analysed short trailers; ‘Wild Child’ and ‘The Edge of Seventeen’, both in the teen comedy genre. This was an efficient, easy and effective way to access this type of research material for my own work. Also working as a platform to upload my final finished product, again, acting as a platform to share my work.  By being bale to easily reach all of these trailers the research stage was extremely smooth, and was significantly improved by the accessibility of real media texts allowing me to look in depth into conventions, narrative, mise-en-scene, sound, lighting, camera angles etc. I was able to pick out similarities and differences which later informed me on my own trailer, as I could see the additions I needed to include for a successful trailer in the teen comedy genre.
  • 8. CONSTRUCTION PHASE  Within the construction process of my three products, film poster, film magazine and trailer, digital technology was very important, just as much so as the research and planning phase. This focused on the use of the digital software rather then the platforms which can be found easily due to web 2.0.  I used adobe premier elements to edit my trailer together using raw footage shot on a cannon DSLR 100. I also used adobe photo-shop elements too edit my ancillary products ; film magazine front cover and film poster.  Both of these software platforms enabled me to easily edit my trailer and my products and also tailor my products to the genre that I have chosen as they were very easy to use giving me the ability to put the knowledge gained from my research and planning phase into my products to get a successful overall outcome. I was able to follow real media conventions in both my digital print products and in my moving image trailer due to the access to these software platforms.
  • 9. CONSTRUCTION: ADOBE ELEMENTS  Adobe elements was one of the digital software platforms which I used o make my trailer. It is a video software application in which I upload raw footage onto my computer and edit it directly from these programs. From this, I was able to edit my trailer to include still images, video clips, sound effects titles, music and voice overs, giving effects and smooth transitions to all of these elements including the basic colour correct and video enhancements which mimics the effect of real media texts.  Elements was a vital part of this process as it gave me the ability to use all of my raw footage which I shot over a period of time to create my trailer allowing all of this to be pieced together and I was also bale to add effects in post production.  It also gave me the ability to add complex effects to my trailer, such as multiple sounds effects, music and voice- overs which enabled me to set my genre firmly throughout my trailer. The use of sound was a key round in giving my trailer a comical tone. I got my tracks from YouTube (emailing the record company to asking to gain the rights to use this music). I used multiple tracks throughout my trailer to show the journey that my characters go through and set their personalities deeply in the trailer. The first is a very upbeat, fun and quirky piece setting my comical tone right from the beginning of my trailer introducing the original equilibrium to the trailer. I continued to use fun music, dipping in and out of the voice overs and dialogue to give a young feel to the trailer which is often found in many real media texts. For my voice overs, I used a zoom H5 to record, giving a clear crisp feel to the sound allowing my trailer to have a narrative to it, making sense to the audience. I had to edit this together to fit with these tracks as well as the footage in order to have a strong sense of continuity within my trailer.
  • 10. CONSTRUCTION PHASE: PHOTOSHOP  Photoshop was a crucial part of my products as it allowed me to complete both my film poster and magazine front cover which I needed to complete my project.  Elements Photoshop is a sister program of the full Photoshop software. It allowed me access to every single tool that I needed, such as the eraser, colour correction and eraser without being too complicated to use. This made it easy to get used to with very little Photoshop experience and also give an effect finished product.  Additionally, the magnetic lasso tool was extremely helpful in my construction of my products as it removed background easily while connecting to the sections of the image that I wanted to keep. An example is the main picture for my trailer poster, I used the magnetic lasso tool and the eraser together to gain a smooth edge around my image of my main protagonist.
  • 11. EQUIPMENT  For the construction of my trailer and other ancillary products I used many different parts of equipment. I used a cannon DSLE 100 camera for both the filming of my footage and also my photos. This was essential in taking high quality resolution moving image as well as still images. I paired the camera with a tripod to get a very still and stable image, without this, I would have a very shaky and I would not have been able to take the highest quality pictures. To record voice overs within my trailer, I used a zoom H5 recorder to get my voiceovers clear and crisp giving a professional high quality feel.  During my photoshoot I used two soft boxes to gain an even look to my star while the bright like replicates real media products. Additionally, I also used a green screen to work as a plain back ground which gave me an easy colour to remove during post production.
  • 12. EVALUATION: DIGITAL DOCUMENTATION/ PRESENTATION  Blogger, Prezi, YouTube and Abobe.  During my evaluation stage, technical platforms allowed me to document my work effectively.  To present my work I used Prezi and Power-point. Prezi is a website made available due to web 2.0 as it is a digital platform created so that users can also create presentations which have smooth transitions and cool effects. Power point is a software by Microsoft which creates a slide show to display information quickly and effectively. Both of these were useful in my presentation of all stage within my project.  To document all of my work, I used blogger to upload posts on my research, development, planning, final products and evaluation as it is an effect way to document all of my work and keeping it all in one place allowingme to be organised throughout the entire process.
