During the time of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries revolts against the Roman Catholics separated religious harmony in West Europe. Martin Luther pioneered the method of reformation when he simply disagreed with strict religious standards that came from the Catholic Church. In contrast Catholics and Protestant’s major disagreements stem from the understanding and authority of the Bible. Protestants didn’t believe in the authority of the pope or any priestly authority. The idea of “justification” by faith alone” become the core of Protestant beliefs (Bentley, Ziegler &Salter, p.509 ). Catholic reformation was in response to the success of Protestant reformation and an attempt to regain the following that they once had. They made concerned efforts to clarify the differences between the two churches. The Council of Trent and the Society of Jesus were very crucial in the Catholic Reformation. The council required church authorities to abide by strict moral guidelines which required them to attend training a be properly molded for their responsibilities. Ignatius ensured Jesuits were vastly educated as well. They made astonishing missionaries and confidently gained the reputation of the public. They served as counselors to kings and rulers and were able to influence policies. References Bentley, J. H., Ziegler, H. F., & Streets-Salter, H. E. (2015).
