3. He wrote many plays and poems. However, none of his
manuscripts survived, only the printed poems and plays
remain.
Shakespeare wrote 37 plays by himself and collaborated
with other dramatists for at least four more.
All of his plays were written between 1590 and 1614 and
they were printed in 1594 as cheap quartos.
It is believed that Shakespeare started writing before 1592,
because by then some of his plays were being performed;
however we have no way of knowing when he actually
began writing his works.
4. In 1623, thirty six of Shakespeare’s plays were
published in what is known as the “First Folio”
It contained all the tragedies, comedies and histories.
The quartos and the first folio ensured that
Shakespeare’s works survived long after they were no
longer performed.
These published versions have been used since the 17th
century by actors and directors to return the plays to
the stage.
5. However, there are many debates among scholars
about how the printed texts actually represent
Shakespeare’s original ideas; they believe the printed
ones could have been edited.
Between about 1592 and 1604, Shakespeare wrote four
poems as well as creating a collection of sonnets which
were published as quartos between 1593 and 1609.
Debates about the printed editions of the poems have
been focussed on the sonnets
