Swimming is the movement and
displacement through water by
the use of the body limbs and
usually without using any
instrument or support to move
forward, generally swimming is
done for recreation, sport,
exercise or survival.
3. HISTORY OF SWIMMING
Swimming has been recorded since
prehistoric times, the oldest records of
swimming are paintings made in the Stone
Age, approximately 7000 years ago.
The coastal tribes that lived in what is now
the Netherlands were known as excellent
swimming tribes by the Romans. The
Batavians could cross the Rhine River
without losing the formation, according to
Tacitus.
4. MICHAEL PHELPS
He is an American swimmer and the most decorated
Olympic sportsman of all time, with a total of 28
medals. Phillips also holds the records of more Olympic
gold medals (23), more gold medals in individual events
(13) and more Olympic medals in men's events (15).
In the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, after winning eight
gold medals, Phelps was established as the highest gold
medalist in a single edition of the games. Five of those
medals were in individual events, equaling the record
of Eric Heiden and Vitaly Scherbo as multiple gold
medalists in individual events in a single edition.
