Jake Barnes Relationships
In his earnest novel, The Sun Also Rises, Ernest Hemingway uses disillusioned characters in relationships consisting of unrequited love to show what
it means to be a part of the Lost Generation. The story takes place in Paris, the city of love, but just like Paris and the Lost Generation, these
characters are broken down and are struggling to heal from the war. The way they do so is searching for love, but instead they stumble upon
disappointment. Our first hopeless romantic is Jake Barnes, he is portrayed as a blunt man, but at his core he is broken. Like the Lost Generation, the
war stole something from Jake, in his case it was his ability to have sex. His whole character revolves around his disability and is worsened when he

Robert is in an unhealthy relationship with Frances, their relationship and motives behind the marriage are ones that comprise the Lost Generation.
Frances chose to marry Robert because he was well off and back in those days being an independent woman was difficult especially if one was
losing their looks; Frances was starting to age and she settled for Robert to avoid dying with cats, so here we have this woman who does not even
love the man she is married to but chose to be with him to survive in the world. Alongside the Lost Generation she forfeited her aspirations after the
war to manage to get by. On the other hand we have Robert who is believed to have never been in love; Jake described him to be " married by the
first girl who was nice to him," clearly we notice that Robert isn't entirely sure of his relationship considering his lack there of. Robert embodies the
Lost Generation; he is trying to find love but is lost in the sauce of tarnished mentality of those who lived through the

If he cannot heal himself ,perhaps he can heal others. In the end, not an impotence at all." (Bradley ,2014 ,P.239) Bradley explains that Jake shares
the steer the good aspects and his comment copes with what Hemingway asserted in an interview with George Plimpton after some years from
releasing the novel that Jake was not emasculated in the manner of a steer .Although some critics and readers point out that Jake resemble Cohn as
both follow Brett around like a steer but to compare Cohn to a steer is to imply ,symbolically, that he has no guts , no courage which contradict with
Jake who absolutely have them. The impact of the great war motivated Hemingway to design the plot of this post war novel and granted him an insight

Schwarz in his essay American Prohibition , Nationalism , and Expatriation in The Sun Also Rises points out that " Hemingway was certainly one
such writer. Like many alcoholics , Hemingway did not view his excessive drinking as a disease , and he does not present in The Sun also Rises as
such . Rather , drinking in the novel actualizes Hemingway's own view of drinking , and signifies both a communal enjoyment of life and its
pleasures and a manner of rebelling against prohibition and its nationalist agendas ." ( Schwarz , 2011 , P185

Jake Taylor Individualism
From start to finish the film "to save a life" presents the viewer with a multitude morality concepts that are depicted by the main character Jake
Taylor. The setting of the movie "To save a life" takes place in a highschool and follows Jake Taylor a popular basketball player with questionable
morals. Jake Taylor is the childhood friend of Roger Dawson and begins to distance himself from Roger due to feeling embarrassed by Rodger. The
major rift between their friendship occurs when Jake encounters a potential lady Amy Briggs friend who invites him to a party. Shortly thereafter their
relationship intensifies and they become boyfriend and girlfriend. Roger is left with the impression that he has been abandoned by the world. Roger

These virtues come with being human regardless of one's religious belief. Prudence is using a degree of cation to make the right decision. Prudence
is utilized by Jake when he leaves the party after playing beer pong. Temperance is the ability to use moderation. Toward the end of the movie this
trait is apparent as Jake avoids getting to the point where he is drunk. Justice is the constant goal of protecting human dignity for all. Jake seeks out aid
for his fellow Christian Jonny when there was a bomb threat at the highschool. Fortitude is the moral courage to do good; strength to overcome
obstacles. Jake demonstrates fortitude when he deals with his myriad of dilemmas. They include how to handle getting Amy pregnant and what to do

Brokeback Mountain compare and contrast Essay
First, I applaud the movie for daring to tell a story that nobody else presumed creating. Even in 2005, this was a pretty prohibited thing to discuss. To
its credit, the movie follows the original story fairly close, but a details were left out that made all the difference.
The short story Brokeback Mountain (1997) written by Annie Proulx received a lot of attention when it was first published in the New Yorker. The story
is about the relationship between Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar, two cowboys who develop a forbidden love for each other and have to live separate
lives. They first meet when they both get hired to herd sheep on Brokeback Mountain in Wyoming. The movie adaptations by the directorAng Lee,
came out 2005. And it received ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They actually talk about it, how much better this is than with any woman. It shows them close, it shows them getting personal, even discussing the
possibility of running away together. The movie did not discribe the emotional intimacy Jack and Ennis shared even before they had sex. Ennis's
emotional transformation in Jack's company appears in the book with the line, "Ennis, riding against the wind back to the sheep in the treacherous,
drunken light, thought he'd never had such a good time, felt he could paw the white out of the moon." The deep friendship does not reveal in the
movie, the way the book does, which was the foundation for their love. (Walford, Compare/contrast the book vs. the movie, ennisjack, 2006)
Alma take a quite big part in the short–story, because of Ennis and his importance. As I mentioned before, Ennis is more well portrayed than Jack and
this makes Ennis and Alma's relationship more evident. "In December Ennis married Alma Beers and had her pregnant by mid–January." This shows
how Alma is mentioned only because of Ennis. Whereas Jack and Laureen's relationship in the short–story is insignificant and unutterable. "I got a boy,
said Jack. Eight months old. Tell you what, I married a cute little old Texas girls down in Childress– Laureen." This is the only time Jack mention
Laureen, the others are Ennis trying to make him remember her. "You got your baby and wife, that place in Texas." In the film we get the opportunity to

Jake Fahri Case
On May 10 2008, Jake Fahri, a nineteen–year–old teenager with a long history of anger and violence issues, threw an oven–proof dish at a boy in a
local bakery in London. The 12 inch dish shattered and a shard of glass shot through the boy's neck, leaving the boy, Jimmy Mizen, who just turned
sixteen, to bleed to death. After killing, Fahri went underground and did not hand himself over to police until three days later. Based on Fahri's
background of bullying at school and his uncontrollable temper, the public believed his tears and "apology" to the Mizen family were contrived trick
to win sympathy. Indeed, he showed no remorse during the trail and was sentenced to 14 years. It is common for the families of the victims show
extreme anger toward... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In accordance with his view, I believe that Jimmy's family are "permitted" to carry the desires because it only seems "fair" for them if the
wrongdoer is brought to justice in proportion to the harm he caused. Under this situation, wrongdoers can symbolically receive their suffering as a
message. Nevertheless, it is difficult for people to act out their retributive hatreds and Murphy supports this idea with three justifications. The first
reason is that "it is impossible to get even". Undeniably, we are unable to calculate a proper equivalent. For example, in the case of Jimmy, if the
parents wish to get even, they might propose to execute the killer themselves, which is acknowledged as morally wrong and would not be
approved under the law. The second reason is that "it is too costly to get even". Just as the example above, if Jimmy's parents in fact have killed
Jake with their hands, they will pay a price for their passion like going to jail. The third reason Murphy brings up is that "moral decency imposes
constraints" which has been explained in the above case (Murphy, 104). In agreement with Murphy's theories, I believe that retributive hatred is a
proper response to certain wrongdoings and I recommend it to Jimmy's family. However, every coin has two sides. We, as human beings who
emphasize on rationality, should not be blindly led by this

Movie Analysis : ' Boxing Films '
Vyom Thakkar
Film R1B: Boxing Films; Eliot Bessette, Harry Burson
Word Count: 3227
Saved by the Brother: Role of Family Dynamics in The Fighter and Raging Bull Masculinity comprises the backbone of the boxing genre, with the
boxer protagonist in an arena displaying masculinity to an audience that cannot in as pure of a manner. This depiction of masculinity calls upon the
personality of the protagonist to portray a reclamation of a quality that may be repressed in other individuals by society through success in the ring.
This accounts for why the boxing genre so frequently causes audiences to see themselves in the boxer protagonist. However, the burden of masculinity
can be portrayed by boxing films as a complex development of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the film progresses, Jake's self–destructive tendencies cause him to lash out at his brother and his wife, imagining cases of infidelity. The film does
not culminate in Jake's victory and becoming champion as is characteristic of the boxing genre, but instead goes further and shows how Jake poorly
adjusts to retirement, and ends up isolated from his family.
Raging Bull's approach to the boxing film focuses on the negative characteristics of the boxer that account for his masculinity, rather than solely on
the boxer proving his masculinity in the ring. Joey's behavior supplements Jake's and validates it at the start of the film, mirroring some of Jake's
personality. Grindon depicts Joey and Jake's behaviors as representative of "the ideology of Italian American machismo [which] promotes the crises
of masculinity at the heart of the film." 2 Grindon's description is evidenced by Jake and Joey's treatment of Vickie, and their overall attitude
towards women. The relationship between Jake and Joey is what drives the actualization of Jake's negative characteristics for the audience. Joey's
role in Jake's career allows Jake to navigate the field of boxing, but Jake's destructive personality alienates Joey, which becomes a major factor in
Jake's decline. The decline consists of Jake's loss of the following championship match

Jake Blount Essay
Jake Blount is portrayed in a malicious light in order to emphasize how people are oblivious to society's corrupted view of wealth and how it is
handled. When Blount hears of how the poor youth who work in the mills went on strike and were later fired and replaced, he is deeply angered. He
is depicted as "swollen and scarlet" and "scowling" (McCullers 66). The word choice that is utilized attempts to depict Blount's body language,
exemplifying how he is spiteful and angered by the lack of fight and justice prevalent in the poor society. He attempts to explain to the unemployed
men how "the bastards who own these mills are millionaires" and "the people who weave cloth... can't hardly make enough to keep their guts quiet"
(McCullers 66). Blount... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, when the men went on strike for fair pay, the mills fired them and found replacements. These replacements were those who were willing and
desperate enough to work for low wages. Blount's anger, caused by the lack of empathy and justice within the mill system, stems from his opposition
to capitalism. Many believe that in society capitalism is used to exploit the poor for the benefit of the wealthy. When the poor demand more rights and
fair pay, the wealthy move on and hire those willing to work for the standards set. They exploit the poor as resources and after they have been used, they
move on to the next set. However, many within society are oblivious to this, especially those being abused. The amount of ignorance is what angers
Blount the most. After explaining what is occurring in society to the unemployed men they laugh, ignoring the newfound information. Blount claims
maliciously, "laugh – that's all you're good for" (McCullers 67). Blount's condescending statement portrays him negatively, yet it exemplifies the lack of
action and knowledge taken by those exploited. The unemployed men Blout speaks to are unwilling to change the view Blount has on the cycle of

Southpaw Analysis
Evaluation of Southpaw
One of the most popular movies of 2015 was the sports drama Southpaw. The dramatic R–rated movie pulls you in, and makes you fall in love with the
characters. Between the magic behind the camera and the actual scenes, Southpaw is a movie that is very well put together. It would be an
understatement to say that the actors chosen to play the roles in this film are definitely a good fit. This movie will have you feeling all of the emotions
as if you were the character yourself. In my opinion, it is a must see movie.
The film is directed by Antoine Fuqua, who has directed tons of successful action–filled movies such as Training day, The Equalizer, and Olympus Has
Fallen. Fuqua does an outstanding job by using a variety of angles, lighting, and music to intensify certain scenes throughout the movie. The boxing
scenes themselves are like being ringside at a real live boxing match. Fuqua made sure to get close–up looks on both opponents which shows blood,
emotion, and dedication from the boxers. Kurt Sutter was the screenwriter behind the film. Kurt Sutter is the creator of Sons Of Anarchy, a wildly
successful dramatic tv series. Overall, the movie would not be the same without this amazing pair.
Southpaw is the story of Billy "The Great" Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal) a short tempered, rough–around–the–edges boxing champion who grew up in Hell's
Kitchen Orphanage. He adores his beautiful wife Maureen (Rachel McAdams), who also grew up in Hell's Kitchen

Personal Narrative: The Rain Inside William's Room
It was raining in West Seattle, which was not all that unusual. What was not so usual was that it was also raining in William Berry's bedroom, which
was coincidently also in West Seattle. The rain inside William's bedroom was probably due to the very large hole that went through the ceiling and
through the roof as well.
The hole had been created when a cable broke on a crane. The crane had been lifting a very large air conditioner to the roof of five story apartment
building next door to William's house. The air conditioner had been above his bedroom at the time but it was now sitting on the floor of the bedroom
next to the bed. William was trying to figure out how he was going to tell his mother and father about the roof. They had driven up to Canada for the

Jake: A Fictional Narrative
Jake winced at the sharp burn below his rib cage and slowed his stride. He slid his vest aside and peeled the bloodied shirt away from his wound,
revealing a toothed patch across his skin. The bullet had missed his gut, and the bleeding had eased. He wouldn't need a doctor. On the other hand,
Duvall was probably raisin' dust toward the nearest town. Jake struggled between his urgency to warn the sheriff and the diligence he owed the
civilian. However, one glance at the boy and he made up his mind. With a grimace, he closed the distance between them. "Much obliged. Damn outlaws
ambushed me," he said. His savior, taller than Jake first thought, slanted his chin upwards, his wide–brimmed hat cloaking his eyes. Jake moved in

Perhaps she should've pondered that earlier. Despite his throbbing head, he stepped around her and glanced at her horse. Since she didn't have

Formal Analysis of Raging Bull Essay
Formal Analysis of Raging Bull Martin Scorsese's film "Raging Bull" is considered by many to be one of the greatest "sports" films of all time. The
plot focuses on the professional and personal life of boxer Jake LaMotta. In the opening sequence, the film uses narrative, mise en scene,
cinematography, editing, and sound to provide a framework for the rest of the picture. These elements also help to establish the film's themes of
nostalgia, isolation, loneliness, and suffering. In addition to setting up the film's themes, these elements also help to create two distinct personas of the
main character Jake LaMotta. The narrative form exhibited in the opening sequence seems simple at first glance, but actually conveys a multitude of ...

Occasionally, the scene will be interrupted by the sudden appearance of flashbulbs penetrating the smoky air. This not only lends a feeling of
authenticity for the setting and time period, it also reflects the sudden outbursts of violence prevalent throughout the rest of the film. LaMotta
himself is shrouded in his robe and shadows, making his face impossible to see, however his gloved fists are easily seen as he gracefully throws
jabs and stalks the left side of the ring. This introduces his fists as a motif that is repeated throughout the film. For example, LaMotta sees his
hands as being too small, later he abuses them against a cell wall, and most obviously are a symbol of his livelihood. His fists are a tool, which he
uses to punish others, as well as himself. The scene cuts to a sign, in the middle of the screen, that reads "An Evening with Jake LaMotta" and the
audience hears the voice of LaMotta for the first time, which will lead to the next scene. The use of the word "evening" signals the transition that is
about to take place. The audience has seen LaMotta early in his career and now are about to witness him in his career's twilight. This short scene ends
when a man crosses in front of the sign, creating a swiping effect. Now, the third scene begins. The viewer is presented a medium shot of an older,
overweight, and sloppy LaMotta. Juxtaposing the composition of the opening scene where LaMotta is seen on the left

Also, in this book there is a lot of dialogue, which is a great form of characterization, especially when it is in a movie. The text states, " God,

"I have," Maggie told her" (Dessen 182).
"Then why are you bugging Auden about it now?" (Dessen 182). Leah shook her head.

Essay On Jake Grimes
1.The narrator is not very reliable in my opinion. I only trust his narration when he is being in the situation that he's talking about. For example, I
trust him when he was talking about Jake Grimes making a scene at the bar when no one wanted to talk to him. Also, I trust him when he and the
group of townspeople went out to see Mrs. Grimes body. Other than that, I don't really trust any of the rest of his narration. These events occurred
when he was a young boy, and now he is telling the story as a grown man. Kids sometimes tend to exaggerate story's, or what they've heard. And some
of the details of his narration that the gives about Mrs. Grimes personal life is hard to know if he was never present when they happened.
2.I think the dogs seem to represent the Grimes family in a couple ways. The dogs get kicked around and mistreated by Jake Grimes. Also, as they get
treated this way they never leave because they have nowhere else to go. This could represent Mrs. Grimes, and how she has been treated all
throughout her life. Aside from that, they are a lot like Jake and his son. When she had died, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I think the narrator is so fixated on her story because he sees that her death has a hidden meaning behind it that no one else sees. The narrator sees
how Mrs. Grimes spent her whole life caring, and feeding things. He even mentions, "The woman who died was one destined to feed animal life."
And that's exactly how she spent her whole life leading up to her death. I think Mrs. Grimes may represent how something that has been treated so
badly all throughout her life, can still be beautiful. All the townspeople were shocked when they saw her body, and even the narrator says that he got a
"strange mystical feeling" when he saw her body. I think her story may symbolize how other women were being treated in that time, and that were in
situations like Mrs. Grimes. Where they spent their whole lives not being treated right, and were expected to only do household

"Raging Bull" (1980) is not a so much a film about boxing but more of a story about a psychotically jealous, sexually insecure borderline
homosexual, caged animal of a man, who encourages pain and suffering in his life as almost a form of reparation. Martin Scorsese's masterpiece of a

Poetry Across the Ages, Jake Ruzic
"Death is not a foe, but an inevitable adventure." These words expressed by Oliver Lodge perfectly encompasses the idea that although death is
imminent, the adventure of life is what to cherish.
Death is an issue every person will have to face at some point in their life, no matter how hard you try to avoid it or how impossible it seems. The
coming of death may seem unfair or unjust particularly to loose someone prematurely or the death of one's child. However, the person will live on

Film Review : The Movie ' Enemy '
If there is at least one film that I almost ended up liking, but the "almost" part hit the curve real fast by the end of the film, then that film was Enemy.
There are some elements in a film that make a film work well and look great and they include many things, like concepts of photography, music and art
direction to acting and many other factors, but ultimately it all breaks down to the story. You could enjoy afilm and still consider it bad because it failed
to give you a good story. In Enemy, I feel like there was a cool story behind it, but what became of it onscreen ended up being a mess.
Enemy is directed by Denis Villeneuve, who is well known for great award–winning movies such as Prisoners and Sicario. This Canadian production
also stars the famous Jake Gyllenhaal in a multiple lead role. Talking about receiving awards, Enemy did get a bunch of them as well. But I don't
know why it deserved them. The film tells the story of a middle aged college history professor, Adam who is living with his girlfriend and is
dissatisfied with his life up until the point where he discovers his doppelganger, Anthony who is a part timeactor and suddenly finds a little excitement
and drama. Adam starts to pay a great deal of interest in Anthony's life and the plot continues from there onwards. There is a great deal of symbolism in
this film, which makes the film deviate from the original plot. The complexity in the story arises not because one wouldn't understand that everything

to borrow $25 from Mamie. During this time period, the man was usually the only one in the family who worked and was supposed to treat and
pay for the women. Therefore, it is almost shameful that Jake has to rely on Mamie for money, essentially demonstrating that he has failed as a
man to provide a decent living for himself and those he cares about. Similarly, Babbitt's affair results from his failure, but in his case, it's his failure
to find happiness in his life. While Babbitt had faced turmoil for quite some time, once Paul gets thrown in jail, he begins flirting with younger
women and has an affair. He felt sick and tired of his wife and thought that mixing things up might bring him more pleasure. However, when he
notices the pain he's brought upon his wife and learns that she falls ill with appendicitis, he regrets his decisions and wants to care for her again.
Unlike Jake, who continues to mistreat his wife and eventually divorces her, Babbitt recognizes his mistakes and takes action to repair the damage.
The failures of Jake and Babbitt to be proper men led them to breaking their loyalty to their wives, but differing end results, particularly Babbitt's
ability to save his marriage, proves that Babbitt is more of man than

Essay on Donnie Darko
Donnie Darko In recent years, Hollywood has specialised in churning out mainstream trash; generic fodder not even fit for the cutting room floor. Yet
despite these movies' shortcomings, they continue to enjoy success at the box office. Sequel upon sequel, photo fit remake upon photo fit remake,
frequently taking the box office by storm whilst simultaneously relegating smaller independent projects to the now relatively unheard–of arthouse
cinemas. The tragedy is that the independent filmmakers are often those with the most talent; the most creativity; the most flair. One such filmmaker is
director Richard... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, each frame speaks to us on more profound terms than the majority of arthouse films would claim to do. This is, in part, due to the impeccable
performances by each and every member of the cast. Jake Gyllenhaal, a relative unknown, delivers a subtle yet emotionally charged performance as
Donnie himself – the scene in which he tells his psychologist of his various childhood traumas is made both funny and moving by the haunting way
in which Jake delivers each line, contrasted with the almost childish qualities of his movements on the couch. Most incredible of all, however, is his
terrifying screen presence as he trudges slowly through a deserted corridor or along a dark street, head tilted slightly forward, face fixed in a confused,
bewildered expression. Drew Barrymore is also superb as the liberal high school teacher rejected and scorned in a Conservative education system,
while Patrick Swayze is excellent in his extended cameo, a smartly observed satire of a self–help guru with a few skeletons in the closet.
Where the movie comes into its own, however, is in its ability to incorporate and deal with a variety of genres. Every movie genre seems to make an
appearance, so much so that to categorise the movie as simply a "psychological horror" or a "supernatural thriller" would be an unforgivable insult. Even

The Is A Freak By Jake Blount
According to his wife, Biff himself is a freak. He firmly believes in the bisexuality of human beings and becomes increasingly feminine after his
wife's death. There is an unmistakable streak of the grotesque in Jake Blount, the radical agitator and alcoholic Marxist reformer who work for the
amelioration of the poor whites and want Justice, but he does ranting, yelling, raving and drinking. He is, short with heavy shoulders like beams.
He has a small ragged moustache and beneath this his lower lip looks as though it had been stung by a wasp. There were many things that seem
contrary in him, his head is very large and well shaped but his neck is soft and slenderas a boy's. The moustache looks false, as if it has been struck
on for a costume party and will fall off if he talked too fast. His hands are huge in shape, stained, calloused and dressed up with a cheap white linen
suit. His grotesque nature alienates him further from the society. For McCullers' grotesque is the most suitable medium because through this, she
draws an alienated and tragic world of characters who demonstrate physical as well as psychological grotesqueness. Carson McCullers continues her
art of grotesque in her other novels too. The Ballad of the Sad CafГ© is one of the most important grotesque characters McCullers created and it is
generally agreed that Amelia's grotesque tragic tale is an indirect presentation of the novelist's own personal life. In this autobiographical novel, she

Jake & Dinos Chapman
Within the Chapman's portfolio violence, abjection and fetishism combine to form an aesthetic immersed in taboo. Shock is deviously employed as a
constructive means to overwhelm the viewer's emotions while provoking a sense of shared existence. These communal undertones allow the psyche to
unfold thus showing an intuitive take on transgression. A deviant act, however small it may be, entices an individual to step outside the strict
parameters of man–made law, causing a euphoric feeling to resonate from within. At the same time this act creates an appalling sensation due to
morality. This paradoxical effect stems from the very nature of prohibition which, denotes that its very existence cannot be conceived without an initial
violation. The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a result, his satirical edge dulled and historical framework began to unravel. Now, themes of insanity began to immerge from Goya's series. The
contorted positions of each castrated figure displayed the unbridled emotions of Goya as he lost control while creating. This emotional involvement
undercuts the formal quality of social commentary and delivers primal rage as a bastardized answer. From grotesque aesthetics a moral lens is crafted,
allowing the public to assemble information and weigh its' aesthetic qualities against conceptual meaning. If there is a risk of offending morality with
imagery then satire is deployed as a tool to coerce justifiable acceptance. The Chapman's intentions strike satire from this planned mechanism. Without
it, transgression is forced into the public eye; causing liberation from structural confinement and eventually redefining the aesthetics of basic
humanistic intuition. While Goya's works are prominent in critically defending Jake and Dinos, they are not the conceptual focal point. The link
between past and present wars is too obvious of an allusion for the deviant nature of the brothers. Purity of transgression seems to be the direction of
their focus due to the abrasive treatment of subject matter, primitive undertones and relentless repetition. Hans Bellmer's Die Puppe utilizes a

gunslinger tested through physical ability, but is also required to choose between two desires, both of which will affect him psychologically. On his
journey be befriends a boy named Jake Chambers whom he begins to feel deep affection for. Near the conclusion, Roland Deschain is forced to

Donnie Darko and 2001: A Space Odyssey has central meanings that focus on science and religion. Richard Kelly's, Donnie Darko, introduces the

him. Donnie is plagued by visions of a giant sized evil–looking rabbit named Frank. Frank orders Donnie to commit acts of violence, warns of the

Following the montage, Donnie is shown laughing in his bed now that he has successfully time traveled and has learned to cope with his imminent
death. This is comparable to Jesus Christ being sacrificed on the cross for our sins. Donnie sacrificed himself in order to save the world and
conceal the sins of characters Jim Cunningham and Frank. In order to come to this realization, certain events have to occur which can also be seen
as the divine plan of God. Frank tells Donnie to flood the school. As a result of the school being flooded, it is cancelled. Donnie is then able to meet
Gretchen who gives him the confidence and happiness he needs to finally go back in time and sacrifice himself.
A Space Odyssey, on the other hand, spans the entire course of human development and evolution. The central meaning of a Space Odyssey is
portrayed in the scene where astronaut David Bowman arrives at the perplexing monolith. After dissembling Hal, the symbol for technological
advancement, Bowman continues to venture towards Saturn where he finally arrives at the monolith and uncovers its mysteries. Bowman sees himself
aging over time until he is lying on his deathbed with the monolith overlooking him. Bowman is then transformed from a physical being into a spiritual
space baby. This suggests that perhaps evolution does not end with the technological age, but continues to advance in the future. An intelligent

Raging Bull Vs. The Social Network
Raging Bull is a 1980 biographical sports film about boxer Jake LaMotta, directed by Martin Scorsese. The Social Network is a 2010 biographical
film about Mark Zuckerberg and the creation of Facebook, directed by David Fincher. This essay will be an analysis and a comparison of the two
films that seeks to answer the questions: How do the films communicate messages to the viewer? What messages do the communicate? And finally
should films of the biopic genre be viewed as biographical, or should they be viewed as creative works that are not reflective of the people that they
portray?
Before beginning the analytical portion, first a more philosophical discussion about film as an art form. Film is an art form that is experienced by its
receiver over its duration, in that way it is similar to music, and is different from a static art form like paintings. This matters because it alters the way
in which its effect is had on its receiver – the audience. The film is a sequence of shots usually coupled with audio, and the narrative film tells a story.
The story may be delivered sequentially or not, and this choice has implications on how viewers will react. These choices are considered as a part of

Raging Bull Analysis
Raging Bull, released in 1980, is a sports drama portrayed in black and white that tells the story of Jake LaMotta and the fluctuation of his boxing
career and the personal relationships in his life. This movie is referred to as one of the greatest films ever made. It is extremely significant in
film–making because it was nominated for several Oscars, and solidified Martin Scorsese as an amazing director. The movie was directed beautifully
and uses many innovative techniques that were not used in your everyday boxing movie. Instead of showing the action from outside the ring, Scorsese
puts the audience in the ring (Snider).
Raging Bull is a movie that re–tells the story and memoir of Jake LaMotta. The movie begins with Jake (portrayed by Robert De Niro) practicing a
monologue in his bathroom. The scene then switches to a younger LaMotta in the midst of a boxing match in 1941. This flashback paints the
story of how LaMotta received his first loss. The scene starts off with LaMotta and Reeves exchanging blows until LaMotta gains the upper hand
and knocks Reeves to the mat. The crowd starts celebrating, cameras go off, and LaMotta strikes a pose and receives his victory robe. The
celebration is quickly interrupted though by the ring announcer's decision to crown Reeves as the unanimous winner. This creates a huge uproar,
followed by a stampede of people and bedlam in the crowd. Amidst the fight, the scene changes to the Bronx, in 1941. This scene features Joey
(Jake LaMotta's brother) and Salvy (Joey's associate) walking and discussing Jakes boxing career on the streets of New York. Salvy tells Joey to make
Jake 'know that he needs to cooperate and stop being so hard–headed'. Joey then rebuttals Salvy and it becomes known to the audience that LaMotta's
loss was fixed before the match even started. The scene then cuts to Jake inside his apartment sitting at his dinner table.
As Jake sits at his dinner table, the audience gets a taste of the emotional and unstable wreck Jake LaMotta really is. The scene starts by showcasing
LaMotta's fresh boxing wound as he un–patiently waits for the steak his wife is cooking. Jake reflects on the fight and starts an argument with his
wife. He pesters her on how he doesn't want

The Sun Also Rises is a novel by Ernest Hemingway (1926). Hemingway deliberately shaped the protagonists in The Sun Also Rises as allegorical
figures (Bloom, 1985, pp. 107). The novel symbolizes the impotence felt by the main characters after World War I.
Jake Barnes, the narrator, had a wound from an "accident" that happened during the war. The injury damaged his genitalia. As a result, Barnes could no
longer make love, but could still feel the desire. Barnes felt physically less than a man. Barnes made a comment about hating "homos". This shows that
Barnes was insecure about his masculinity. For this reason, he later found himself strongly attracted to the young bullfighter, Pedro Romero, whose
manhood stood without women.

The Gunslinger Chapter Summary
The Gunslinger is a very unique novel to read. There are times of grief, anger, sorrow, action, etc. throughout the story. The setting of the story is also
very confusing. The story takes place in a sort of post–apocalyptic time where everything is sand and desert, but it is later revealed that there are other
worlds. This story follows the journey of the gunslinger as he travels through harsh environments, trying to catch the man in black. The novel begins
with the gunslinger moving through the desert, hot on the man in black's tracks. He then comes across an old farm. The farm is occupied by the

Is Jake Arrieta a better pitcher than Clayton Kershaw? From the many critics and analysts of baseball, some would agree that Arrieta is the superior
athlete, and some would disagree and say that Kershaw is better. I argue that Arrieta is the better pitcher, according to analysts and statistics. Arrieta's
statistics compared to Kershaw's statistics is one justification to why he is the best in the MLB. "Arrieta saved best for last, in more ways than one.
Along with winning 12 of 13 decisions after the All–Star break, he shined in all situations all season. With a 3.78 OPS late in close games and a .474

18–17. Kershaw has pitched in at least 10 of those games, but has not won each game he's pitched in. This shows that Jake Arrieta holds his opponents
to not score, and gives his offense a chance to gain momentum and score and win. "Arrieta didn't say outright that he was worth more than the
seven–year, $175 million contract that the Nationals awarded to Stephen Strasburg earlier this week, but he came close. "I'll let you judge that. Just

expression. "I just love Halloween..." I daze off. "And Aiden I bet." Interrupts Camille with a smile on her face. "Of course," Jake replies with
jealousy ripping through his voice. "Well...." I replied, unsure what to say. I gave her the look that said 'I know what you're doing.' "Come on
don't get all jealous over Aiden I mean he's just the captain of the basketball team." Jokes Camille. "Well, I'm the captain of the football team."
Bragged Jake. "Hey, guys sorry I was late. I had to finish a test in American History. I hope I pass. What Are you guys talking about?" Interrupts
Chad. "No offense but your really smart like you could be the definition of a nerd. And I mean that in the very kindest way." Declares Camille.
Which made Chad smile and blush. "We were just talking about how Jake is jealous of Aiden because Maya might have a crush on him. But we all
know Maya likes Jake and vice–versa. Shouldn't they just go out already?." "They aren't already...?" Chad trails... Show more content on

"She wasn't, she couldn't be. My daughter died a long time ago." While they were trying to talk to her and try to take the knife she had. I look for a
phone I type in 9–1–1 and call for help. Help was on its way we just had to stall Carrie but as soon as I turn back around I'm stabbed in the stomach.
She was just laughing and laughing while I fell on the floor. Jake rushes to me to stop the bleeding, but it was too much. I slowly close my eyes
with a faint yell in my ear, calling my name telling me to keep my eyes open. When I thought it was over and I was dead the paramedics come and
wrap the wound up. While I'm half dozing off with the loss of so much blood. Then I black out. I wake up to find me in a hospital, Jake right beside
me crying. I reach out for him, but as soon as I moved he

Raging Bull Themes
Martin Scorsese's Raging Bull is a movie based on the real–life story of a headstrong middleweight boxer as he strives to become a champion. His
name is Jake LaMotta (Robert De Niro), a world renowned boxer in the 1940s. Themes of violence, jealousy, and insecurity carry the film. LaMotta is
written off as a physically and verbally abusive man, who seems limited only to the brutal emotions of wrath, anger, and envy. His life passes through
sequential phases of punishment, negotiation, and self–disintegration, due to his copious amounts of inner demons. Raging Bull tells the story of an
unlovable washout who manipulates the odds stacked exceedingly in his favor, to destroy himself. LaMotta finds that his own malice, cruelty, lack of
humanity, incoherent rage, and inner demons can best be expressed or exorcised inside of the boxing ring. Boxing is the medium used to forward the
story, but this is not a boxing film. Boxing takes the back seat. Instead, this film is the ultimate character study. ... Show more content on

This is an argument I can perceive gaining no support. If anything, not showing LaMotta's childhood or experiences only serves tribute to the actuality
that he has been and always will be what he is. At no point do we ever concern ourselves about what made Jake LaMotta who he is. Instead, the movie
is about what it means to live life in the way he does. This moving realism is especially established in the opening and closing scenes. It is in these
scenes that we witness a much older, much more beaten down Jake who is balding and overweight, who is currently making living managing a
nightclub and even emceeing at a strip

You can listen to TD Jakes in his sermons, during his guest appearances, and on YouTube, or you can read more by him on his blog. But, if you don't

I've noticed that I don't respond to many things the way I used to. I don't respond to negative people in the same way because I no longer take their
negativity personally. I don't respond to failure in the same way because I no longer view failure as a bad thing. I guess I'm walking in the newness of
life!
How about you? Do you respond to things the same way you always have? Do you think you can't change? If you do, you may want to reconsider!
Life is always changing. You are always changing. It doesn't matter where you are in life or what has happened, you have the potential to walk in the
newness of life because you are capable of choice.
He also tweeted out, "The renewed mind is a process!"
That is something to remember during your struggles towards change. You can't flip the switch one night and have a completely different life the next

Jake Barnes Relationships

  • 1. Jake Barnes Relationships In his earnest novel, The Sun Also Rises, Ernest Hemingway uses disillusioned characters in relationships consisting of unrequited love to show what it means to be a part of the Lost Generation. The story takes place in Paris, the city of love, but just like Paris and the Lost Generation, these characters are broken down and are struggling to heal from the war. The way they do so is searching for love, but instead they stumble upon disappointment. Our first hopeless romantic is Jake Barnes, he is portrayed as a blunt man, but at his core he is broken. Like the Lost Generation, the war stole something from Jake, in his case it was his ability to have sex. His whole character revolves around his disability and is worsened when he can't please Lady Brett Ashley. They both... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Robert is in an unhealthy relationship with Frances, their relationship and motives behind the marriage are ones that comprise the Lost Generation. Frances chose to marry Robert because he was well off and back in those days being an independent woman was difficult especially if one was losing their looks; Frances was starting to age and she settled for Robert to avoid dying with cats, so here we have this woman who does not even love the man she is married to but chose to be with him to survive in the world. Alongside the Lost Generation she forfeited her aspirations after the war to manage to get by. On the other hand we have Robert who is believed to have never been in love; Jake described him to be " married by the first girl who was nice to him," clearly we notice that Robert isn't entirely sure of his relationship considering his lack there of. The setting of the movie "To save a life" takes place in a highschool and follows Jake Taylor a popular basketball player with questionable morals. Jake Taylor is the childhood friend of Roger Dawson and begins to distance himself from Roger due to feeling embarrassed by Rodger. The major rift between their friendship occurs when Jake encounters a potential lady Amy Briggs friend who invites him to a party. Jake seeks out aid for his fellow Christian Jonny when there was a bomb threat at the highschool. Fortitude is the moral courage to do good; strength to overcome obstacles. • 4. Brokeback Mountain compare and contrast Essay First, I applaud the movie for daring to tell a story that nobody else presumed creating. Even in 2005, this was a pretty prohibited thing to discuss. To its credit, the movie follows the original story fairly close, but a details were left out that made all the difference. The short story Brokeback Mountain (1997) written by Annie Proulx received a lot of attention when it was first published in the New Yorker. The story is about the relationship between Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar, two cowboys who develop a forbidden love for each other and have to live separate lives. They first meet when they both get hired to herd sheep on Brokeback Mountain in Wyoming. The movie adaptations by the directorAng Lee, came out 2005. And it received ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They actually talk about it, how much better this is than with any woman. It shows them close, it shows them getting personal, even discussing the possibility of running away together. The movie did not discribe the emotional intimacy Jack and Ennis shared even before they had sex. Ennis's emotional transformation in Jack's company appears in the book with the line, "Ennis, riding against the wind back to the sheep in the treacherous, drunken light, thought he'd never had such a good time, felt he could paw the white out of the moon." The deep friendship does not reveal in the movie, the way the book does, which was the foundation for their love. (Walford, Compare/contrast the book vs. the movie, ennisjack, 2006) Alma take a quite big part in the short–story, because of Ennis and his importance. As I mentioned before, Ennis is more well portrayed than Jack and this makes Ennis and Alma's relationship more evident. "In December Ennis married Alma Beers and had her pregnant by mid–January." This shows how Alma is mentioned only because of Ennis. Whereas Jack and Laureen's relationship in the short–story is insignificant and unutterable. "I got a boy, said Jack. Eight months old. Tell you what, I married a cute little old Texas girls down in Childress– Laureen." This is the only time Jack mention Laureen, the others are Ennis trying to make him remember her. "You got your baby and wife, that place in Texas." In the film we get the opportunity to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Jake Fahri Case On May 10 2008, Jake Fahri, a nineteen–year–old teenager with a long history of anger and violence issues, threw an oven–proof dish at a boy in a local bakery in London. The 12 inch dish shattered and a shard of glass shot through the boy's neck, leaving the boy, Jimmy Mizen, who just turned sixteen, to bleed to death. After killing, Fahri went underground and did not hand himself over to police until three days later. Based on Fahri's background of bullying at school and his uncontrollable temper, the public believed his tears and "apology" to the Mizen family were contrived trick to win sympathy. Indeed, he showed no remorse during the trail and was sentenced to 14 years. It is common for the families of the victims show extreme anger toward... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In accordance with his view, I believe that Jimmy's family are "permitted" to carry the desires because it only seems "fair" for them if the wrongdoer is brought to justice in proportion to the harm he caused. Under this situation, wrongdoers can symbolically receive their suffering as a message. Nevertheless, it is difficult for people to act out their retributive hatreds and Murphy supports this idea with three justifications. The first reason is that "it is impossible to get even". Undeniably, we are unable to calculate a proper equivalent. For example, in the case of Jimmy, if the parents wish to get even, they might propose to execute the killer themselves, which is acknowledged as morally wrong and would not be approved under the law. The second reason is that "it is too costly to get even". Just as the example above, if Jimmy's parents in fact have killed Jake with their hands, they will pay a price for their passion like going to jail. The third reason Murphy brings up is that "moral decency imposes constraints" which has been explained in the above case (Murphy, 104). In agreement with Murphy's theories, I believe that retributive hatred is a proper response to certain wrongdoings and I recommend it to Jimmy's family. However, every coin has two sides. We, as human beings who emphasize on rationality, should not be blindly led by this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Movie Analysis : ' Boxing Films ' Vyom Thakkar Film R1B: Boxing Films; Eliot Bessette, Harry Burson Word Count: 3227 Saved by the Brother: Role of Family Dynamics in The Fighter and Raging Bull Masculinity comprises the backbone of the boxing genre, with the boxer protagonist in an arena displaying masculinity to an audience that cannot in as pure of a manner. This depiction of masculinity calls upon the personality of the protagonist to portray a reclamation of a quality that may be repressed in other individuals by society through success in the ring. This accounts for why the boxing genre so frequently causes audiences to see themselves in the boxer protagonist. The film does not culminate in Jake's victory and becoming champion as is characteristic of the boxing genre, but instead goes further and shows how Jake poorly adjusts to retirement, and ends up isolated from his family. Raging Bull's approach to the boxing film focuses on the negative characteristics of the boxer that account for his masculinity, rather than solely on the boxer proving his masculinity in the ring. Joey's behavior supplements Jake's and validates it at the start of the film, mirroring some of Jake's personality. Grindon depicts Joey and Jake's behaviors as representative of "the ideology of Italian American machismo [which] promotes the crises of masculinity at the heart of the film." 2 Grindon's description is evidenced by Jake and Joey's treatment of Vickie, and their overall attitude towards women. The relationship between Jake and Joey is what drives the actualization of Jake's negative characteristics for the audience. Joey's role in Jake's career allows Jake to navigate the field of boxing, but Jake's destructive personality alienates Joey, which becomes a major factor in Jake's decline. • 7. Jake Blount Essay Jake Blount is portrayed in a malicious light in order to emphasize how people are oblivious to society's corrupted view of wealth and how it is handled. When Blount hears of how the poor youth who work in the mills went on strike and were later fired and replaced, he is deeply angered. He is depicted as "swollen and scarlet" and "scowling" (McCullers 66). The word choice that is utilized attempts to depict Blount's body language, exemplifying how he is spiteful and angered by the lack of fight and justice prevalent in the poor society. He attempts to explain to the unemployed men how "the bastards who own these mills are millionaires" and "the people who weave cloth... can't hardly make enough to keep their guts quiet" (McCullers 66). These replacements were those who were willing and desperate enough to work for low wages. Blount's anger, caused by the lack of empathy and justice within the mill system, stems from his opposition to capitalism. Many believe that in society capitalism is used to exploit the poor for the benefit of the wealthy. When the poor demand more rights and fair pay, the wealthy move on and hire those willing to work for the standards set. They exploit the poor as resources and after they have been used, they move on to the next set. However, many within society are oblivious to this, especially those being abused. The amount of ignorance is what angers Blount the most. After explaining what is occurring in society to the unemployed men they laugh, ignoring the newfound information. Blount claims maliciously, "laugh – that's all you're good for" (McCullers 67). • 8. Southpaw Analysis Evaluation of Southpaw One of the most popular movies of 2015 was the sports drama Southpaw. The dramatic R–rated movie pulls you in, and makes you fall in love with the characters. Between the magic behind the camera and the actual scenes, Southpaw is a movie that is very well put together. It would be an understatement to say that the actors chosen to play the roles in this film are definitely a good fit. This movie will have you feeling all of the emotions as if you were the character yourself. In my opinion, it is a must see movie. The film is directed by Antoine Fuqua, who has directed tons of successful action–filled movies such as Training day, The Equalizer, and Olympus Has Fallen. Fuqua does an outstanding job by using a variety of angles, lighting, and music to intensify certain scenes throughout the movie. The boxing scenes themselves are like being ringside at a real live boxing match. Fuqua made sure to get close–up looks on both opponents which shows blood, emotion, and dedication from the boxers. Kurt Sutter was the screenwriter behind the film. Kurt Sutter is the creator of Sons Of Anarchy, a wildly successful dramatic tv series. Overall, the movie would not be the same without this amazing pair. What was not so usual was that it was also raining in William Berry's bedroom, which was coincidently also in West Seattle. The rain inside William's bedroom was probably due to the very large hole that went through the ceiling and through the roof as well. The hole had been created when a cable broke on a crane. The plot focuses on the professional and personal life of boxer Jake LaMotta. In the opening sequence, the film uses narrative, mise en scene, cinematography, editing, and sound to provide a framework for the rest of the picture. These elements also help to establish the film's themes of nostalgia, isolation, loneliness, and suffering. Occasionally, the scene will be interrupted by the sudden appearance of flashbulbs penetrating the smoky air. This not only lends a feeling of authenticity for the setting and time period, it also reflects the sudden outbursts of violence prevalent throughout the rest of the film. LaMotta himself is shrouded in his robe and shadows, making his face impossible to see, however his gloved fists are easily seen as he gracefully throws jabs and stalks the left side of the ring. This introduces his fists as a motif that is repeated throughout the film. For example, LaMotta sees his hands as being too small, later he abuses them against a cell wall, and most obviously are a symbol of his livelihood. His fists are a tool, which he uses to punish others, as well as himself. The scene cuts to a sign, in the middle of the screen, that reads "An Evening with Jake LaMotta" and the audience hears the voice of LaMotta for the first time, which will lead to the next scene. The use of the word "evening" signals the transition that is about to take place. The audience has seen LaMotta early in his career and now are about to witness him in his career's twilight. This short scene ends when a man crosses in front of the sign, creating a swiping effect. Now, the third scene begins. Also, I trust him when he and the group of townspeople went out to see Mrs. Grimes body. Other than that, I don't really trust any of the rest of his narration. These events occurred when he was a young boy, and now he is telling the story as a grown man. Kids sometimes tend to exaggerate story's, or what they've heard. And some of the details of his narration that the gives about Mrs. Grimes personal life is hard to know if he was never present when they happened. 2.I think the dogs seem to represent the Grimes family in a couple ways. The dogs get kicked around and mistreated by Jake Grimes. Also, as they get treated this way they never leave because they have nowhere else to go. Unfortunately, he doesn't have enough money to afford this, so he needs to borrow $25 from Mamie. During this time period, the man was usually the only one in the family who worked and was supposed to treat and pay for the women. Therefore, it is almost shameful that Jake has to rely on Mamie for money, essentially demonstrating that he has failed as a man to provide a decent living for himself and those he cares about. Similarly, Babbitt's affair results from his failure, but in his case, it's his failure to find happiness in his life. While Babbitt had faced turmoil for quite some time, once Paul gets thrown in jail, he begins flirting with younger women and has an affair. This is, in part, due to the impeccable performances by each and every member of the cast. Most incredible of all, however, is his terrifying screen presence as he trudges slowly through a deserted corridor or along a dark street, head tilted slightly forward, face fixed in a confused, bewildered expression. Drew Barrymore is also superb as the liberal high school teacher rejected and scorned in a Conservative education system, while Patrick Swayze is excellent in his extended cameo, a smartly observed satire of a self–help guru with a few skeletons in the closet. Where the movie comes into its own, however, is in its ability to incorporate and deal with a variety of genres. Donnie is plagued by visions of a giant sized evil–looking rabbit named Frank. Frank orders Donnie to commit acts of violence, warns of the impending end of the world, and is his guide throughout the movie. Following the montage, Donnie is shown laughing in his bed now that he has successfully time traveled and has learned to cope with his imminent death. This is comparable to Jesus Christ being sacrificed on the cross for our sins. Donnie sacrificed himself in order to save the world and conceal the sins of characters Jim Cunningham and Frank. In order to come to this realization, certain events have to occur which can also be seen as the divine plan of God. Frank tells Donnie to flood the school. As a result of the school being flooded, it is cancelled. Donnie is then able to meet Gretchen who gives him the confidence and happiness he needs to finally go back in time and sacrifice himself. A Space Odyssey, on the other hand, spans the entire course of human development and evolution. The central meaning of a Space Odyssey is portrayed in the scene where astronaut David Bowman arrives at the perplexing monolith. After dissembling Hal, the symbol for technological advancement, Bowman continues to venture towards Saturn where he finally arrives at the monolith and uncovers its mysteries. Bowman sees himself aging over time until he is lying on his deathbed with the monolith overlooking him. Bowman is then transformed from a physical being into a spiritual space baby. • 32. Raging Bull Analysis Raging Bull, released in 1980, is a sports drama portrayed in black and white that tells the story of Jake LaMotta and the fluctuation of his boxing career and the personal relationships in his life. This movie is referred to as one of the greatest films ever made. It is extremely significant in film–making because it was nominated for several Oscars, and solidified Martin Scorsese as an amazing director. The movie was directed beautifully and uses many innovative techniques that were not used in your everyday boxing movie. Instead of showing the action from outside the ring, Scorsese puts the audience in the ring (Snider). Raging Bull is a movie that re–tells the story and memoir of Jake LaMotta. The movie begins with Jake (portrayed by Robert De Niro) practicing a monologue in his bathroom. The scene then switches to a younger LaMotta in the midst of a boxing match in 1941. This flashback paints the story of how LaMotta received his first loss. The scene starts off with LaMotta and Reeves exchanging blows until LaMotta gains the upper hand and knocks Reeves to the mat. The crowd starts celebrating, cameras go off, and LaMotta strikes a pose and receives his victory robe. The celebration is quickly interrupted though by the ring announcer's decision to crown Reeves as the unanimous winner. This creates a huge uproar, followed by a stampede of people and bedlam in the crowd. Amidst the fight, the scene changes to the Bronx, in 1941. This scene features Joey (Jake LaMotta's brother) and Salvy (Joey's associate) walking and discussing Jakes boxing career on the streets of New York. Salvy tells Joey to make Jake 'know that he needs to cooperate and stop being so hard–headed'. Joey then rebuttals Salvy and it becomes known to the audience that LaMotta's loss was fixed before the match even started. The scene then cuts to Jake inside his apartment sitting at his dinner table. As Jake sits at his dinner table, the audience gets a taste of the emotional and unstable wreck Jake LaMotta really is. The scene starts by showcasing LaMotta's fresh boxing wound as he un–patiently waits for the steak his wife is cooking. Jake reflects on the fight and starts an argument with his wife. His name is Jake LaMotta (Robert De Niro), a world renowned boxer in the 1940s. Themes of violence, jealousy, and insecurity carry the film. LaMotta is written off as a physically and verbally abusive man, who seems limited only to the brutal emotions of wrath, anger, and envy. His life passes through sequential phases of punishment, negotiation, and self–disintegration, due to his copious amounts of inner demons. Raging Bull tells the story of an unlovable washout who manipulates the odds stacked exceedingly in his favor, to destroy himself. LaMotta finds that his own malice, cruelty, lack of humanity, incoherent rage, and inner demons can best be expressed or exorcised inside of the boxing ring.
