Storm Virus was an email-spread computer virus from 2007-2008 that infected between 1-50 million computers. It derived its name from messages discussing 230 deaths in a storm. The virus created over 100,000 variants to avoid detection by antivirus software. Microsoft eventually released a fix via the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool. The creator has never been identified. The virus caused social and economic impacts including millions lost by the Royal Bank of Scotland and shutdown of a Republican website.
