Definition - „Workplace Transport‟ means - any vehicle or piece of
mobile equipment that is used by employers, employees, self-employed
people or visitors in any work setting (apart from travelling on public roads).
‘Workplace Transport’ includes – Lorries, Vans, Fork Lift Trucks, Loading Shovels,
Tractors, MEWP’s, Fire Appliances Etc
The HSE document HSG136 “Workplace Transport Safety” brings
together the various legislation, and identifies that as a result of
workplace vehicle accidents about 50 people die each year, there are
1,500 Major Injuries, and 3,500 over 3 day injuries.
Clearly when people and vehicles are operating in the same These tragic
close proximity there is a potential for significant incidents incidents act as a
and injuries. In India where the company are building a joint
reminder that
venture new coal fired power station, there have been two
tragic fatalities involving heavy vehicles. Full details will not

vehicles separate.
There are a number of essential things we can all do :
1. If there is no need for you to be close to operating vehicles - stay away !
2. When walking adjacent to a roadway be aware of vehicles - if possible keep
out of the road
3. Be aware of area rules e.g. At the fire station or W10 fuel handling ensure you
sign in, make sure you speak to area personnel to make your intentions
known and ensure its ok to go onto the area(should you be accompanied ?)
4. Ensure that you can be seen by vehicles operators – wear Hi Viz clothing –
eyeball the driver – make sure he’s seen you before you walk into the area
5. Ensure heavy vehicle rules are always followed – banksman, barriers, audible
reversing warning etc
6. Be aware of your own safety around vehicles (includes areas like :- W10, Stores, ash
handling, coal handling, workshops, car parks)
2. A number of site and plant traffic risk assessments were carried out
during 2008
In your area, make sure the assessments ……….
Can be found, and are still valid
Actions put in place were completed, and are still effective
What YOU and I MUST do, so that WE ALL stay safe….
Before you use any workplace vehicle ….
Make sure you are trained / validated to use it
Check it for damage
Carry out pre-use inspection checks
Record the checks you carried out
Inspect the area in which you will operate the equipment
Banksmen …..
The most effective way of dealing with the risks caused by reversing is to
remove the need for reversing
If that can not be done, we should ……
“Use a banksman when needed to ensure safe reversing. The banksman should
be a designated, trained person whose job it is to keep the reversing area free
of pedestrians and ensure a safe manoeuvre. Banksmen should wear high-
visibility clothing, be visible at all times, stand in a safe position and use
recognised signals to guide reversing vehicles (from HSE’s leaflet INDG148
Reversing vehicles).”
Check that any workplace vehicle has ....
A key which is held securely, and only issued to authorised personnel
A log of who has used it & A pre use inspection record
If key security, maintenance log, or pre-use inspection record are not correctly
controlled or used, report this to your team leader so that improvements can be
made.
If you find that equipment is damaged …
Do not Use it Do Report it
Sembcorp procedures (and good practice) is that All equipment :-
Is examined before use
Is only operated by trained / validated personnel
Needs a Banksman in attendance when it is manoeuvred where there is
limited or reduced visibility
