The Kaipatiki Project
The Kaipatiki project was a project started in New Zealand in the year 1998. It began as a
group of people whom started to weed a reserve in order to preserve the beauty of the forest,
since then however it has become an organization dedicated to saving the environment. Over the
last 14 years the people who volunteer there have planted over 75,000 trees and are still planting
them. The organization itself is a nonprofit, volunteer based group. Though the usual number of
people with in the group remains around 30, the number of volunteers tends to be much larger.
They have a solid organizational structure, and currently have their own center to work out of,
which houses a nursery where around 20,000 plants are grown annually; the nursery also houses
a 16,000 liter tank of rain water in order to properly care for these plants. They offer courses on
environmental protection and often work with different neighborhoods with in New Zealand.
Their main office is open on week days from 9am to 3pm. This project started off as a small
number of people getting together to work for a common cause not as a government affiliated
program.
