4. Quality Parameters of Silk
Various properties of silk are assessed
in the current analysis –

Tenacity
Reelability
5. Filament Length
It is the total length of silk filament ,
unwound from a single cocoon
measured in meters.
Of the total length, only 80% is Reelable
Filament Length is measured by using
Epprouvette
6. Equipment -reel of 1.125m
circumference
Capable of revolving at a uniform speed
of 300 RPM
Has a dial showing the number of
revolutions
Has Automatic stop device and is used
for single cocoon reeling
8. A sample is drawn from each replication
comprising around 10 cocoons.
Ten cocoons were cooked and reeled on an
Epprouvette
The mean value of filament length in meters
was calculated as per the standard formula
11. Average No. of × Circumference of
Filament = Rotations the wheel (χ)
Length(AFL)
χ = 1.125m
Note :For example ,400 Revolutions = 450 m of thread
12. Non-breakable filament length
• It is the average length of filament that can be
unwound from the cocoons without a break.
Non-breakable filament length is calculated as
Average Non-breakable = Tot. Filament Length
Filament Length 1+No. Of Breaks
(ANBFL)
13. Denier represents the size of the yarn, i.e.,
the weight in grams of 9,000 meters of the
filament. It is calculated as
Denier(D) = Weight of filament(g) × 9000
Length of filament(m)
15. Average total length of Filament in Single
Cocoon for
Indian Multivoltine Pure Races : 300-400 m
Indian Multivoltine Hybrids : 400-650m
Indian Multivoltine Cross Breeds: 800- 1200m
Bivoltine Cocoons :1000-1600m
16.
17. Filament length decides the Silk Yield of
Cocoon.
ANBFL decides yield of continuous silk ,which
is used in Silk Industries
Denier plays vital role in Cocoon Marketing
