2. The closed framing generates fear because it connotes being trapped and helpless. This is effective because it makes the viewer tense and scared of being in the same position as the victim. Inhuman features such as extended cheeks and bulky shoulders suggest this antagonist isn’t human but a creature. This therefore represents the expected monster with most horror films. Terrified reaction of the victim connotes the fear generated towards the antagonist and this integrates the audience with his feelings, making them feel the same fear. Positioning of antagonist on screen left signifies his power and dominance over his victim which is positioned slightly lower to connote he is weak and inferior. The victim depicts the typical victim in horror films that panic and show no sign of strength but only fear. The dark lighting shadowing over the antagonist makes him mysterious and doesn’t reveal his full appearance. This makes the audience curious to see his full identity, however, because they don’t it makes them tense and scared.
3. The long/establishing shot makes the house seem unapproachable and mysterious. Therefore fear is generated within the audience because it isolated in an excluded area. This represents the typical, run down house in which most horror films use as a convention of creating fear. The open area around it is seen to connoted that the house is not surrounded by human activity. Therefore this generates fear because the house is insecurely placed. The dark and gloomy lighting signifies the house’s lack of care, making it unnatural as most houses appear lived in. The boarded up window and rotten wood reinforces this lack of care and signifies fear because the audience are un aware of what has happened to it, or what could be living in there. Over grown grass signifies the houses exclusion because it is abandoned and surrounds the house to suggest it shouldn’t be entered.
4. The enclosed framing is signified by the corridors walls being placed either side of the shot. This generates the fear of being in an enclosed place that is run down and small with an antagonist. The far positioning of this person could be a good place to position an antagonists silhouette. This would then make the audience scared and curious as to know what/who it is. It’s sudden appearance could be signified by discordant non-diegetic sound which shocks the audience. The dark lighting makes the corridor look mysterious and could be possible places to build tension or shock the audience with sudden jumps and loud non-diegetic music. The lose wood on the floor and graffiti on the walls signify that this house has been abandoned and abused. This could suggest the presence of a mysterious antagonist, but also the fear of being in a area that is very different then usual.
5. The camera angle is looking down on her to suggest she is weak and vulnerable. This is reinforced by her positioning on the right of the frame because it is known that people positioned screen right are inferior. This represents the typical female which is always terrified and weak in horror films. The shallow depth of field signifies her importance of representing the typical, inferior victim in a horror film because she is focused within the shot. The reaction of the victim connotes her fear and integrates the audience with her emotions. The mucky skin and dirty dress signifies the character is in an unpleasant situation and is in a excluded area where she has had to do anything in order to survive.
