Notes VERBS
A verb is a word that is used to express an action, a condition, or a state
of being.
There are THREE types of verbs: action, linking, helping
Action Verbs tell what the subject does. The action can be physical
(climbing) or mental (knowing).
EX King Kong stomps through the streets of New York.
EX Everyone fears King Kong.
EX Kong loves Anne.
Linking Verbs link the subject to a word in the predicate (the verb in
the sentence and everything else that follows).
Form of be: is, am, are, was, were, been, being
Express condition: appear, become, feel, grow, look,
remain, seem, smell, sound, taste
EXKing Kong seems angry.
EXHe is a huge gorilla.
Some verbs can serve as linking or action.
EX Kong looks at Anne. She looks frightened.

Helping Verbs help main verbs (action or linking) express meaning.
do: do, does did
have: have, had, has
others: could, should, would, may, might, must, can, shall, will
The combination of one or more helping verbs with a main verb is called
a verb phrase. HV+MV=VP
EXWe have watched the movie King Kong four times.

EX I can rent it any time.

EX Kong has terrorized many New Yorkers.
Helping verbs come before the main verb.
Helping verbs can act as a main verb in some sentences.
EX Kong has no chance of survival.
