In modern households, hardly any device runs without electricity. However, burning fossil fuels to fulfill the rising demand for electricity in homes is causing several environmental problems like climate changes and ozone depletion. Domestic consumption of energy is believed to be responsible for more than 25% of all carbon emissions.
Energy efficient electrical appliances can help in reducing domestic energy consumption. Since majority of energy usage in households is invisible, you can monitor your consumption with better information on electrical appliances while also lowering your electricity bills.
2. Summary

3. Calculate Energy Consumption of your
Appliances
With this simple formula, you can estimate an appliance’s energy usage.
Daily Kilowatt-hour (kWh) consumption
= (Wattage × Hours Used per Day) ÷ 1000
Image: Formula to calculate consumption
For annual consumption, multiply the daily kWh consumption with the
number of days that appliance has been used.
For annual cost estimate of running an appliance, multiply the annual
consumption with your local utility’s rate per kWh.

Table: Estimated wattage of common household appliances (GE)
With a firm idea of energy consumption in your household, you can
identify the areas of wastage where appliances are used inefficiently or
recklessly. Investing in energy efficient models of various appliances is
rewarded with lower electricity bills and, on larger scale, decreased fossil
fuel consumption. A small change in your daily routine such as switching
off surplus lights or removing mobile chargers from sockets after use can
produce huge benefits for the environment.
