The 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens were the first modern Olympic Games. Held from April 6-15, 1896 in Athens, the Games featured athletes from 14 countries competing in 43 events across 9 sports: athletics, cycling, fencing, gymnastics, shooting, swimming, tennis, weightlifting, and wrestling. Greece topped the medal table, winning the most gold medals. The Olympics helped to establish Athens as the historical birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games and revived the Olympic tradition in the modern era.
