  1. 1. Modern Olympic Games <ul><li>Planning began in 1894, with the founding of the International Olympic Committee </li></ul><ul><li>They were inaugurated in the spring of 1896 </li></ul>
  2. 2. History <ul><li>The first games were held in April 1896. They attracted Athletes from the United States, Great Britian and 11 other nations. </li></ul><ul><li>Only 42 events in 9 sports were scheduled for these games </li></ul>
  3. 3. When are the Games Held? <ul><li>The Olympic Games in Berlin in 1916 were cancelled because of World War I; those scheduled for 1940 and 1944 were cancelled because of World War II </li></ul><ul><li>The winter Olympic Games were added in 1924 </li></ul><ul><li>The games resumed in 1948 and are held every 4 years </li></ul>
  4. 4. History <ul><li>The total number of participants has increased dramatically over the years </li></ul><ul><li>In 1896 there were 285 participants, in 1992 this number has grown to approxametly 10 600 </li></ul>
  5. 5. Women in the Olympics <ul><li>Since the first Olympics the number of women in the competition has greatly increased </li></ul>

Events – today participants take part in over 400 different events <ul><li>Weight lifting Rowing </li></ul><ul><li>Tennis Running </li></ul><ul><li>Triathlon Curling </li></ul><ul><li>Football Swimming </li></ul><ul><li>Badminton Judo </li></ul><ul><li>Hockey Boxing </li></ul><ul><li>Gymnastics Basketball </li></ul><ul><li>Skating Table tennis </li></ul>
  7. 7. The Prizes <ul><li>Winners get medals </li></ul><ul><li>GOLD – 1 st place </li></ul><ul><li>SILVER – 2 nd place </li></ul><ul><li>BRONZE – 3 rd place </li></ul><ul><li>The winners do not receive any money . </li></ul>
