4. • ERG and VEP are both electrophysiology tests and can be compared to ECG.
• ERG (ElectroRetinoGraphy) is an eye test that evaluates the function of the retinal
cells of the eye.
The ERG test helps diagnose retinal diseases and also diseases in the body that
secondary affect the eye (diseases like diabetic retinopathy).
• VEP (Visual Evoked Potentials) are used to detect and evaluate dysfunction of the
optic pathway including the visual cortex, like inflammation of the optic nerve or
diseases like Multiple Sclerosis.

10. ERG/VEP Tests are indicated
∗ In cases where ophthalmoscopic observation is
precluded due to the presence of opacities in the
media.
∗ When subjective tests are unreliable due to the age of
the patient.
∗ In prognosis in cases of vascular disorders.
