1. Explosive Destruction System
• Application: To treat and destroy Recovered Chemical Warfare Material (CWM)
within the United States; owned and operated by the Project Manager for Non-
Stockpile Chemical Materiel (PMNSCM)
• The EDS is a trailer-mounted mobile system designed to destroy chemical
munitions in a safe and environmentally sound manner
• The heart and soul of the EDS is a sealed, stainless steel vessel that provides
total containment of blast, vapor, liquids, and fragments
• The EDS uses explosive cutting charges to access the munition and destroy its
explosive components; the chemical content of the munition is then neutralized
by a reagent appropriate to the type of agent present
• Agent destruction is confirmed by sampling the residual liquid and air before
reopening the vessel; process waste products are removed, packaged and
shipped to an approved disposal facility for final disposition

2. Operators place
the item in the
munition holder.
Linear-shaped charges are
attached along the munition
body and the item is placed in
the advanced fragment
suppression shield.
Operators slide the
item into the vessel.
Operators remotely detonate the
linear shaped charges to
access the munition body and its
chemical fill, while eliminating its
explosive capacity.
Once neutralization chemicals are
added, the vessel is heated and
rotated to mix the contents and
neutralize the chemical fill. Liquid
sample collected and analyzed.
The vessel is closed and
sealed.
Next water rinse is added and
rotated, drained, an air sample is
collected and analyzed. When
safe, door is opened and scrap
metal is removed.
