3. Relationships
• Tywin Lannister is the head of the Lannister Clan.
While he is not the King, since his family sits in the
position of royalty, he still pretty much runs the
show as if he were King.
• Cersei (Tywin’s daughter) is the Queen. She was
married to the, now deceased, King Robert
Baratheon.
• Cersei’s son, Joffrey, becomes King upon his
“father’s” death. Joffrey is still a teenager, so his
grandfather, Tywin, runs the show from the
background.
• Jamie, Cersei’s brother and son of Tywin, is the
biological father of Cersei’s 3 children: Joffrey,
Myrcella, and Tommen.
• Tyrion is the third child of Tywin. He is a dwarf, and
the rest of the family really does not care for him
much. Although, there is a deep, below the surface
brotherly bond between Jamie and Tyrion that they
really don’t let the rest of the family see because of
the stigma against Tyrion.
4. Roles
• Tywin Lannister has all of the power within this family.
He dictates who does what, who marries who (even
against their will), and how the kingdom is run even
though he is only the King’s Hand (the main advice
giver to the King).
• Cersei got comfortable being the previous King’s wife
and having that power. Now that her father has kind of
stepped in to clean up the mess in the capitol, her
power has been greatly reduced. There is a gnarly
under the surface power struggle going on between
Cersei and her father that we don’t quite know how it
will pan out in the end.
• Jamie was a member of the King’s guard, and a soldier
for the Lannister Clan. He lost one of his hands, greatly
reducing his effectiveness in battle. His role in the
family is hazy right now because he doesn’t really fit
anywhere in a solid capacity. He is currently trying to
help save Tyrion’s life, however.
• [MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD]
5. Social Environment
• The Lannister family is currently residing in King’s Landing, the city where the royal
family rules from. The land the family owns and rules as their own clan is called
Casterly Rock.
• King’s Landing is a huge city.
• Being of the royal family it is presented that the family is beyond rich. The
Lannister motto is that “A Lannister always pays their debts.” The reality, however,
is that the Lannisters are going broke, and they are keeping that information as
secretive as they possibly can because they have always been on the much richer
side of the spectrum. This is one of the motivating factors for Tywin’s actions in
King’s Landing and being the King behind the curtain.
• Another influential role within this family is the fact that Cersei and Jamie, while
siblings, are the (secret) parents of the most recent as well as the current child
King in King’s Landing, which puts an interesting twist on the family dynamics.
6. Rules
• 1. Lannisters always pay their debts.
– Used both as a promise and as a threat.
• 2. While several family members know, NO ONE speaks
of the fact that Jamie and Cersei are the parents of
Cersei’s children. They are only known as the offspring
of the deceased Robert Baratheon.
• 3. You do what Tywin says within this family OR ELSE.
• 4. Tyrion is nothing more than an imp, and the killer of
their mother. (She was killed while giving birth to
Tyrion).
7. Rituals
• Tywin rules from behind the curtain without much fuss
from his children. Cersei gives him a certain amount of
trouble over this because of her previous powerful position
as Queen.
• Jamie is/was the glorious soldier. He is now being sent back
to the homeland of Casterly Rock to run the family from
that side of business. This is also a move by Tywin to
separate Jamie and Cersei.
• Tyrion has always been a bit of a hell raiser and rebel due
to the way he has been treated by his family. He has never
really been a political rebel, just a rebel in the sense of
partying all the time and spending copious amounts of time
and money on the prostitutes around the lands.
8. The 6 Cs
• Communication
• Tywin or Joffrey is usually the most dominant in conversations
• Both very pejorative of other family members, especially Tyrion
• Occasionally other family members will bring Joffrey down a peg as a
means of controlling some of his less appropriate behaviors
• Contact
• Very little affectionate contact outside of Jamie and Cersei or Cersei and
her children
• Frequent aggressive contact such as slapping.
• Not unidirectional: Slaps go all around whenever one member
heavily disrespects another or behaves in a manner “unfitting”
• Some manner of emotional contact as there is some empathy between
the family as even the more conflicted members can sometimes see eye
to eye
9. The 6 Cs (Continued)
• Care
– Cersei cares and provides for her children who, in turn, help her
maintain her station.
– Though Cersei is the primary caregiver of her children the whole
family provides some service in rearing the children, even if only
discipline.
– Tywin was notoriously cold to his children and left much of their
upbringing to his late wife and their servants.
• Coping
– The individuals in the family cope in several unhealthy ways
depending on the individual: Alcohol, fighting, incest,
prostitutes, murder.
– None of these are partaken with any other members of the
family (except of course the incest).
10. The 6 Cs (Continued)
• Conflict
– Frequently: Disagreements on methods of rearing
the heirs, displays of power, arguing.
– Typically verbal, sometimes passive (such as making
plays in the background that indirectly affect other
members), occasionally physical.
– The most friction occurs between Tyrion and Tywin,
Tyrion and Cersei, and Joffrey and everyone.
• Consensus
– The family ultimately agrees that they need to maintain
their place in the world and that the heirs are the most
important part of that.
• Disagree often on how to do this.
– There is some agreement between members and for
the most part they still prioritize family over non family.
• Some members of the family get along fine, generally Jamie
get’s along with everyone (but especially Cersei and Tyrion),
while even conflicted pairs like Tywin and Tyrion or Cersei
and Tyrion have moments of agreement.
