Cases have now became an integral part of a group discussion (GD), instead of giving general topics to the
candidates and judging only their soft skills, B-schools are now focusing more on the person’s quick thinking,
logical approach and problem solving ability before finalising his/her candidature. To solve a case study problem
it requires no prior knowledge about the given subject and are considered as a practical approach for judging a
candidate’s managerial abilities required for a B-school admission.
NMIMS’s has been taking CDPI for past several years, here’s how a general case study round at NMIMS is-
Here is what MBAP got to know from the past trends-
The case given is a small snippet of an actual case, mostly of 1-2 paragraph or else it can be a small
scenario based case study.
An NMIMS’s Case discussion mostly consists of 2-3 panellist.
There will be 10-12 candidates per panel, 5 minutes to read the case and jot down your points and 15-
20 minutes for the discussion.
The most repeated area of cases involve scenario on management issues,Human Resource Management
cases, Ethics based cases, statistical based cases, current affairs related, government policies or social-
political debates.
SOLVED EXAMPLE OF A CASE STUDY
“Ram is a sales executive in an ERP company, yesterday at 7:00 pm he gets an urgent appointment from his
client for what he was waiting for one month, this deal may increase his sales volume, he has to meet him
tomorrow by 10:30 to 11:00 am at his office in Mumbai anyhow, presently, Ram is in Delhi.”
Remember- There is no right or wrong in a case discussion you just have to put your point of view or your
solution in a systematic manner.

MBAP has identified 5 golden steps that you can use to solve almost any case study
Step 1- Problem Identification:
In any case the first step should be the problem identification. Here the problem is time, Ram has to reach
Mumbai by 10:30 and he is currently in Delhi, so he has very less time.
Step 2- Considering Assumptions-
In this step you must specify the limits and boundaries under which the case must be solved, these must be
given in the case itself or else you have to assume it. Each assumption made must have a clear reason behind it.
When it comes to our case we have to assume that Ram has to reach Mumbai before 11:00 or else he will lose
his big opportunity.
Step 3- Possible solution for case-
Under this step you have to think of as many solutions as possible and also write the advantage and
disadvantage of it
Example-
Solution1:
Advantages/Disadvantages:
Solution 2:
Advantages/Disadvantages:
Step 4- Evaluating alternatives-
This step should have the answer to why this chosen solution is best solution for the case and how it can be
helpful, what importance it has. It may be a single solution or an integrated solution.
Step 5- Summary or Conclusion-
Here you must sum up the case, what were the possible solution discussed, how feasible they are and come to
a conclusion.

We had a chat with our aspiring students about their experience of case discussion at NMIMS-
Here’s what we got
-Saahil Javkar
We were divided into groups of 12. A case was given to us.
In a company ‘ABC’, a woman is facing some problem as she is the only bread earner in her home. She regularly
takes leaves and is quite inefficient in her work. Her husband is jobless and does not support her and asks her
to continue her job. She does the chores, takes care of her children and also works in the office. You are the
manager of company ABC, so how will you solve the problem?
“It was an HR case study.I couldn't start the case. I made 3rd
entry but made sure that I don’t fumble
while speaking. The points that I made were well received by other candidates and they added to
those points. I made 3-4 good entries. There was a little bit of fish market but we managed to calm it
down. Over all it was a healthy discussion”
-Rajat Surve
The case given to us was a business case study.
A manufacturing company is suffering heavy losses and its sales have dipped substantially due to a new
competitor in the market. You are the head of the team and have to discuss various reasons for the same apart
from the competitor’s entry. As the team head you are also supposed to suggest possible solution to the
identified problems.
“There were 15 minutes given to us for the discussion, every one was cutting each other and it was kind of a
fish market and the panel had to interfere between. Overall we had an ok discussion and I was able to make 3
entries”
At MBAP we strive for you to learn more in simpler manner everyday so here are few samples cases for you to
practice
Example 3- Ethics Based
An antiques collector has a very important and historical artefact which is believed that it brings good luck
and makes the farm flourish of a tribe in Amazon. But there is no scientific proof. If you are the collector,
would you give back the artefact to the tribe knowing the fact that it values a lot of money in the market or
would you keep it?
Example 4- Situation based
