1. Energi och klimat
– Tänk om vi kunde lösa jordens
energiproblem! Kol och olja har
förödande verkningar på vårt klimat. Om
någon ändå kunde hitta ett sätt att få säker
kärnenergi. Vid fusion – sammanslagning
av väteatomer till heliumatomer – frigörs
enorma energimängder. Om vi kunde
hitta ett billigt och säkert sätt att använda
fusion kunde vi få all vår energi från
havsvatten, som det finns nästan hur
mycket som helst av.
– Jo, det kan ju låta lockande, men jag
tror att även nya typer av kärnenergi
kommer att innebära höga risker. Vi
borde hellre satsa på att utveckla
energisnålare system och apparater.
– Man kan också rena utsläppen bättre.
Kanske hitta på bra sätt att ta hand om
koldioxid och annat som påverkar
klimatet.
– Jag tror inte det räcker i längden. Jag
tycker forskarna borde lägga kraft på att
utveckla ännu mer effektiva sätt att
utnyttja solenergi, kanske ny
solcellsteknologi.

Question number 1. Energy and Climate
– Imagine if we could solve the Earth's energy
problems! Coal and oil have devastating effects on our
climate. If someone could just find a way to create
safe nuclear energy. Like fusion - where hydrogen
atoms fuse into helium atoms - and release huge
amounts of energy. If we could find a cheap and safe
way to use fusion, we could get all our energy from
seawater, a nearly unlimited source.
– Well, it may sound tempting, but I think even new
types of nuclear energy will involve high risks. We
should focus instead on developing energy efficient
systems and appliances.
– You can also clean up emissions better. Maybe find
a good way to take care of carbon dioxide and other
gases that affect the climate.
– I just don’t think that’s enough in the long run. I
think scientists should concentrate on developing more
efficient ways to harness solar energy... maybe new
solar cell technology.

2. Vatten och mat
– Tänk om vi kunde få en värld där alla
har tillgång till rent vatten för att dricka,
tvätta och bevattna odlingar! Det kanske
vi får om vi hittar effektiva sätt att rena
vatten från salt och föroreningar.
– Jo, men många av oss skulle också
kunna använda mindre vatten. Jag tror det
blir ännu viktigare att alla kan få äta sig
mätta. Vi måste odla växter som ger ännu
mer och bättre näring! Kanske odlar vi i
framtiden vårt kött i växthus i stället för
att slakta djur?
– Jag tycker det vore bättre att försöka
hitta mer effektiva sätt att odla än att
förändra växter och djur på konstgjord
väg. Kanske kan vi i framtiden bygga
mycket mer effektiva växthus, kanske
som höghus i storstadsområden. Då
slipper vi dessutom en hel del
energislukande transporter!
– Fast kan detta verkligen räcka? Jordens
befolkning växer snabbt. Kanske borde vi
satsa på teknologi som gör det möjligt för
oss att bosätta oss på rymdstationer.

Question 2. Water and food
– Imagine if we could have a world where everyone
has access to clean water for drinking, washing and
watering crops! Maybe it can happen if we find
effective ways to purify water from salt and pollution.
– Yes, but many of us could also use less water. I
think it’s even more important that everyone can have
enough to eat. We need to grow plants that provide
more and better nutrition! Perhaps we can even grow
our meats in greenhouses instead of slaughtering
animals!
– I think it would be better to try to find a more
effective way to cultivate food, rather than to alter
plants and animals by artificial means. Perhaps in the
future we can build much more efficient greenhouses,
maybe even as towers in right in the middle of our
cities. That way we cut down on so much energy-
intensive transport!
– But can any of this really be enough? I mean the
world's population is growing rapidly. Maybe we
should invest in technology that allows us to settle on
space stations.

C vaccin eller effektivare botemedel 3.
Sjukdomar
– Tänk om någon kunde lösa cancerns
gåta! Jag skulle vilja att det fanns ett
vaccin eller botemedel mot cancer.
– Om vi verkligen skall tänka stort
hoppas jag att forskarna kunde hitta ett
sätt att bromsa åldrandeprocessen så att vi
fick leva längre utan att bli sjuka.
– Jo, fast vi har ju också andra gamla
problem som ännu inte är lösta. Jag skulle
vilja ha en värld fri från malaria. Eller en
värld utan AIDS.
– Man skulle komma långt om bara alla
som behöver får tillgång till de läkemedel
som redan finns mot de här sjukdomarna.
Jag tror nya epidemier blir ett värre
problem. Och något forskarna verkligen
måste försöka få bukt med är
mikroorganismer som utvecklar
motståndskraft mot de läkemedel vi har
idag.

Question 3. Diseases
– Imagine if someone could solve the riddle of cancer!
I would wish for a cancer vaccine or cure.
– Well, if we’re really going to think big, I hope that
researchers can find a way to slow the aging process
so that we could live longer without getting sick.
– Yeah, well, we've got a lot of old problems that are
still not solved. I would like to have a world free from
malaria. Or a world without AIDS.
– You would get a long way just by providing the
people who have these diseases with the medicines
that already exist! I think that new epidemics are a
more serious problem. And something that scientists
really must try to eradicate are the microorganisms
that develop resistance to the drugs we have today.

4. Framtidens berättelser
– Tänk vad berättandet kommer att vara
viktigt i framtiden! Datorer och digitala
medier kommer att göra berättelserna
tillgängliga överallt. Berättandet kommer
att fortsätta att utvecklas, alldeles oavsett
om man kan läsa den på läsplatta i stället
för på papper.
– Många e-böcker kommer att vara
interaktiva så att läsaren själv kan
påverka händelseförloppet. Det kommer
att öppna nya möjligheter inom
litteraturen.
– Säkert kommer framtiden att föra med
sig nya sätt att tänka kring vår värld och
hur vi beskriver den med språket. Jag tror
poesin kommer att spela en viktig roll för
detta.
– Berättandet kommer samtidigt att förbli
länken till historien; vårt gemensamma
minne. Här har framtidens litteratur en
viktig uppgift.

Question 4. Future stories
– Imagine how important story-telling will be in the
future! Computers and digital media will make stories
available everywhere. And the narratives will continue
to evolve, regardless of whether they are published
electronically or on paper.
– Many e-books will be interactive so that each reader
can influence the course of events. It will open whole
new literary possibilities.
– I’m sure that the future will bring with it new ways
of thinking about our world and how we use language
to describe it. And I believe that poetry will play an
important role in this.
– Story-telling will also continue to be the link to our
history - our collective memory. This is where
literature will play an critical role in the future.

5. En fredligare värld
– Tänk om de länder som har kärnvapen
kunde förmås att oskadliggöra dem!
– Kärnvapen har ju faktiskt inte använts i
krig vid mer än två tillfällen år 1945. Men
krig och konflikter har fortsatt att skapa
lidande. Jag skulle vilja ha en
sammanslutning av alla jordens länder, en
sorts världsregering med starkt mandat,
som kan lösa motsättningar innan de leder
till krig.
– Jag tror att jordens länder vill råda över
sig själva och stora organisationer är
svåra att få effektiva. Öppenhet och fria
meningsutbyten är viktigare. Om alla
människor fick bra utbildning och frihet
att uttrycka sina åsikter skulle vi få en
fredligare värld.
– Det gäller också att vi hittar lösningar
på jordens miljö- och klimatproblem. Om
många platser blir omöjliga att bo på är
det stor risk att konflikter uppstår.

Question 5. A peaceful world
– Imagine if the countries that have nuclear weapons
could be persuaded to disarm them!
– Actually, nuclear weapons have not been used in
warfare other than two times back in 1945. But war
and conflict have continued to create suffering. I
would like to have a union of all the world’s countries,
a sort of world government with a strong mandate,
which can resolve conflicts before they lead to war.
– I think the nations of the world want to rule
themselves – it’s really difficult to make large
organizations effective. Openness and the free
exchange of ideas is more important. If everyone got a
good education and had the freedom to express their
views, we would have a more peaceful world.
– It’s also important that we find solutions to the
Earth's environmental and climate problems. If many
areas become impossible to live in, there is a great risk
that conflicts will arise.

6. En stabil och rättvis världsekonomi
– Tänk om någon kunde komma på ett
system så att vi kan dela på pengar och
andra resurser rättvist. Vi behöver en ny
världsordning för en rättvisare värld.
– Jag tror att trots allt är marknader där
utbud och efterfrågan styr i grunden det
bästa ekonomiska systemet. Vi måste
dock förstås utveckla vår kunskap om hur
marknader fungerar.
– Vi behöver styra ekonomin för att
undvika ekonomiska kriser och annat
elände. Och se hur globaliseringen av
världsekonomin ger möjligheter åt ett
fåtal att lägga under sig enorma resurser.
– Jag tror att det är just bättre
kommunikation vi behöver. Jag tror
mycket kan lösas med mer effektiva
informationskanaler mellan människor
och bättre system för kommunikationer,
transporter och energi-överföring.

However, we must, of course, continue to develop our
knowledge of how market economies work.
– We need to steer the economy in order to prevent
economic crises and other misfortunes. And to see
how the globalization of the world’s economy enables
just a few people to acquire enormous resources.
– I think it's just better communications that are
needed. I tmean we can solve a lot of issues with more
effective communication channels between people and
better systems of communication, transportation, and
energy transfer. Infrastructure will be the important
issue for the future.
