1. Evaluation question 1;
In what way does your
product use, develop or
challenge existing codes
and conventions?
2. My aim was to make my soap as realistic as
possible such as these existing soaps I’ve
researched
Emmerdale (ITV) Hollyoaks (channel 4, E4) Coronation street (ITV)
We tried to mimic these soaps as much as possible;
Eastenders Nothern Quarter
Example of a scene I
used from Eastenders
and mimicked into my
soap
Bullying scene between lexi and our bulling scene between
lola and some girls Mackenzie and Danelle and
some guys
3. research
To choose which channel I wanted my soap to appear on I
did research to find which channel was viewed the most,
and it turns out the the BBC gets the most views, mostly
because of the non advert on the channel. I chose to put my
soap on BBC three (channel 7) as most shows from the bbc
for a younger audience are on there
The starter to my trailer
To decide what time and dates my soap should be on I looked at the time schedule for TV
programs and found most soaps tend to start between 6 pm to 8:30pm so and BBC Three
doesn't come on till 7pm I decided to have my soap on air at 8:00 weekdays.
4. Storylines
We wanted real situation that happen to teenagers in this modern day we came up with plenty of
different stories;
We chose to do a cheating story because its quite common in
• cheating modern day
•Stealing
•Rough upbringing
We wanted something that would be a difficult
•Bullying situation and see how we could portray it.
•Drugs
•Alcohol
Taking inspiration from eastenders fostering story;
Eastenders Northern quarter
M.E.S; in a rough
looking locations.
Costume we had the
‘bullies’ wearing
either black or
hoodies to fit the
stereotype of a
villain.
Lola being held back my lexis gang while lexi Danelle being held back by Mackenzie's gang
talks while Mackenzie talks
•Camera; long shot, showing the ‘hero’ being held •Camera; 2shot medium close up but showing the
back and the ‘villain’ taking role main charters ‘hero’ being held back and the ‘villain’
taking role
5. Example of shots I took inspiration
of from existing soaps; Conventions
Camera we used a wide range Sound I added a sound track a
of camera angles and techniques, remix of ‘invaders must die’ by
such as; the prodigy because I felt it
• high angels fitted my trailer as the music is
• 2 shot quite tense, powerful and
• establishing shot intimidating which is what I
High angle • zooming in wanted to make my audience
• framing feel when the watched this
•POV shots trailer, I made the music
• panning volume higher in the most
•Reverse angles intense parts of my trailer like
•Close ups the slap at the end.
•Over the shoulder
M.E.S we decided are costumes had
Reverses angle to look like something a normal
Lighting we didn’t use teenager would wear on a day to day
any lighting in are soap as biases. Location we chose a public
we wanted it to be as cafe for the cheating story line to
realistic as we possible make it feel like this is something
could you might see and we chose to shot
the foster scene in a ally way
because we wanted the stereotype
of our ‘rough’ characters to fit the
Framing
area
7. Naming my soap
At first my soaps name was ‘Affleck’s palace’ because where we shot the trailer was
near there and Affleck’s palace is a popular place, but then I changed mine to
Northern Quarter because even though Affleck’s palace is a popular place, maybe
not many people would know it from out of Manchester so I changed the name to
have ‘Northern’ so the region of my soap was clear and quarter just sounded good
with it also a lot of the popular soaps on television are named after a street, town
or region for example, Coronation street and waterloo road.
brand, I wanted the brand name to stick out and be remembered in the viewers
heads so I used a fount that looked rough so it would fit into the theme.
