Strong Pest Control in Jacksonville Crucial in Rising Bed Bug Attacks

Pest infestation is fast becoming a problem again in the United States. Recent reports have
identified rising infestation in 50 states, with bed bugs showing consistent attacks during the
past months. Based on a survey done by the National Pest Management Association in early
2013, almost all pest control companies in the country have confirmed being called for bed bug
infestation cases. More than 75% of those surveyed also claimed that bed bugs were the most
difficult to exterminate.
2. This situation has long prompted scientists to look into the biological makeup of these critters, in
the hope of finding a flaw they can use to develop effective solutions to eradicate common bed
bug species. Such a break came a few years back, which was first reported in the 2010
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Emily Sohn reports, in an article for
Discovery News:
In an attempt to get the upper hand, scientists have been looking for
weaknesses in bed bug biology. One theoretical target is a type of symbiotic
bacteria that lives inside the insects and produces B vitamins for their hosts.
When researchers removed the bacteria from bed bugs, they reported in
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2010, the insects grew
more slowly and became sterile.
The article also mentions another more recent study that found that bed bugs could be frozen to
death by freezing the items they’ve attached themselves to, and using a specific temperature.
Stuff such as toys, shoes, books, and clothes that can’t be machine-laundered can be placed in
a plastic bag and put in the freezer at a temperature of -18 degrees Celsius. Electronic devices
that have LCDs, old books, historical artifacts, and other items that might be damaged by
moisture will have to undergo a different pest control treatment.
This may be easier said than done, though. The article notes:
Even as refined guidelines emerge for how to avoid and treat bed bugs, it’s
becoming clear that the blood-suckers won’t go down without a fight.
"Most bed bugs have multiple types of resistance to pesticides," said Joshua
Benoit, an entomologist at the University of Cincinnati. "Until someone
develops a new chemical that serves as a very good pesticide that can also
be safe enough to treat with inside houses, it’s going to be a while before
we’re bed-bug free."
Thus, while scientists are still busy looking for that Achilles’ heel in those bed bugs, stronger and
reliable pest control in Jacksonville and other cities in Florida is required.
Professional Jacksonville, FL pest control and management companies, such as BugManiacs,
offer comprehensive pest management services that include on-site evaluation, control and
extermination, and prevention.
