2. Estrada Courts
In 1970’s Estrada courts a housing project was the focal point in Muralism.
From 1973-1978 artist painted 82 murals in the housing projects.
Nature Row was a popular section in estrada courts.
3. Dream World
● Dream world was a mural made by Norma Montoya.
● Norma made this mural for the kids that want to escape the hard times
they are going through and want to enter a dream world full of good
things.
● She wanted to get away from political oppression and focus on the kids.
4. Mural at USC
Judy Baca sketched a mural for USC
USC tells Judy that the mural is not understandable to an anglo audience
and that the history of the mural is depressing.
Judy replies to USC “ I do not make the history I just paint about it”.
5. Summary
Murals are important part of the chicano culture. Murals allow us to express
political and social oppression. The ability of artist to express how they feel or
what our people are going through is inspiring. The people in Estrada courts
loved the murals and came together to stop the whitewashing of the murals.
The murals have always been and will continue to be a contested artform. In
the process of mural making mexican americans became chicanos.
