Babies are not born with yeast in their bodies. They only come into contact with it from other people.
Most adults carry yeast on or in his or her body.
For most people yeast lives quite happily in most bodily areas, such as our bowel, mouth, the folds of your skin , vagina
and groin, and we usually don’t expect it to cause any problems
However , one can promote the level of yeast in their body to increase, leading to infection by :
 Taking anti-biotics or steroids
 Taking oral contraceptives
 Getting inadequate rest
 Consuming excessive sugar / alcohol, yeast products (eg bread)
 Sickness
 Allergies
Young babies are more prone to thrush than adults because their immune system is immature. Unlike adults this means
their bodies are unable to restrict the growth of yeast effectively resulting in possible infection.
Signs of oral thrush
 White or cream coloured patches on the roof of the mouth inside his sheets and on
the tongue.
 Unsettled behaviour during feeding is rare, so if this occurs, check for signs of oral
thrush
Treating oral thrush
 Boil feeding equipment, boil for three- to seven minutes after each use while an infection is present.
 Toys your baby may have chew on should be washed in hot soapy water.
 Rinse your babies’ mouth out after feeding. A few mouthfuls of water will help remove mill from the mouth. Milk
encourages the growth of yeast.
 Wash your babies hands thoroughly.
 If your baby is breast-fed you will also need to treat your nipples at the same time in order to reduce the risk of
thrush infection occurring in this area.
Signs of thrush in nappy area
 Bright pink or red patches with clearly defined edges.
 There may also be small red spots near the edges.
Preventing and Treating Nappy rash
 Change nappies as soon as is neccessary (wet or dry)
 Wash your hands with soap before and after changing nappies.
 While a rash is present avoid cleaning wipes as they ma sting.
 Always clean a baby front to back.
 Pat and dry bottom with towel and allow to air dry for a short period of time.
 Avoid using petroleum jelly as it can provide a food source for yeast to thrive on.
