me. Prof. Damle! I was seeing him for the first time. (pg:no:43)
Samant: Why not get it over with, Miss Benare? It’s all a game. (pg:no:51)
This prove that Samant’s evidence is a completely imaginary one.
10. Samant says himself as an ignorant.
Samant: Mr.Kashikar…. But I didn’t quite catch it.
Karnik: The charge ? Infanticide.

Samant is not a completely illiterate man.
Samant: you’re quite right. The great sage Tukaram said…..at least I think it was him. (pg:no8)
Samant: Our dear teacher used to say the same thing. (pg:no:9)
Here he speak about the great sage Tukaram and his teacher.
so, this two pharses proofs that Samant is not a complete illiterate man.
11. Tendulkar has portrayed Samant as an innocent, kind and gentle-hearted person in silence! the
court is in session. He use the figure of Samant to drive a wedge between the notion of justice and
the institution of the court.
In Act 1, he shows the nature of Samant.
In Act 2, he shows Samant’s imaginary evidence.
In Act 3, he shows how mature the character is.
Overall his role in this play , “The figure of the simple hearted villager. He is adeptly handled by
the dramatist, as the urban character“ Thus , Tendulkar explores the rich possibilities of the play
through the character Samant.
