FORMULATION, DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF ROSUVASTATIN CALCIUM ORAL
FLOATING TABLETS
OBJECTIVE AND SCOPE OF WORK
The main goal of pharmaceutical formulation is to achieve better
therapeutic activity in the shortest possible time by using smallest
quantity of drug administered by the most suitable route.
Oral dosage forms in which mainly solid dosage forms are more
popular than other dosage forms but suffer from problems like
solubility, absorption viz. bioavailability, therefore patient compliance.
Oral floating tablets dosage form is one of the advanced approach
to achieve the above goal.
FDDS have a bulk density lower than gastric fluid and thus
remains buoyant in stomach for prolonged period of time without
affecting gastric emptying time.
Rosuvastatin calcium is a HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor used in the
treatment of hyperlipidaemia. It is highly soluble in acidic pH and
absorbed more in the upper part of the GIT12. In order to improve the
absorption and its oral bioavailability, we have attempted to formulate
a floating drug delivery systems using Rosuvastatin calcium as the
model drug with HPMC K4M and Ethyl cellulose as polymers.
FDDS are also referred to as hydro dynamically balanced
systems (HBS) as they are able to maintain their low density.

WORK PLAN
1. To develop spectrophotometeric method for the estimation of
Rosuvastatin.
2. Formulation of oral floating tablets of Rosuvastatin Calcium tablets.
3. In vitro evaluation of tablets for hardness, friability, weight
variation and thickness.
4. In vitro evaluation dissolution studies.
5. In vitro buoyancy studies and swelling mechanism.
6. To compare the four formulations and conclude the best
formulation that showed sufficient release for prolonged period.
