2. A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
The flag of sports and fitness flew high in Zebar School for
three days over which they observed their Annual Sports
Day. It comprised of a mix of very creative races for the pre-
primary and primary and serious athletics and drills for middle and senior grades.
Faster! Higher! Stronger!, This slogan welcomed students, parents and teachers to
the Annual Sports Day at Zebar School. Zebar Matters gives you a glimpse into
the bright Sports days of Preprimary, Primary and Middle Sections.
We are grateful for the response we have received for the December issue. This
issue has also covered some fantastic facts on Christmas, a peek into the sports
facilities available at Zebar campus, and travel diaries of Zebar students and
staff. December is a time to reflect on the past year. The New Year brings new light
and hope for us like a chapter of a book that has yet to be written.
Wish you all great 2019 and have a great year ahead!

Sports add a dose of health and activity to life, not only by building
strength and flexibility, but also by influencing the mental and moral character
of a person. The cheer created on the sports field in all the three events was an
attempt to display the many ways in which we, at Zebar School, put in sincere
efforts into bringing about holistic growth of students. We hope to see many
sports stars of tomorrow emerge from our school, setting examples of their own.

went to places named in Lachung and Pelling in Sikkim and Darjeeling in
West Bengal. It was a lovely experience. We went to zero degree point, and
it was freezing. Zero point is situated ahead of Lachung northern boundary
close to Tibet. Its one of the most scenic places of North Sikkim.
Everywhere there was snow around us. I enjoyed
playing in the snow. Also, it was a very adventurous trip as I did the zip
line, I tried mountain trekking and rode on a Yak. I also visited tea gar-
dens in Darjeeling. It was very memorable trip with my parents. I enjoyed
it to the fullest.

I went to Dubai to celebrate my Diwali Vacation. We
did Lakshmi Pooja with our whole family on Diwali. On
Diwali night I went outside to Bur Dubai area where a majority of
Indians stay and saw Diwali lighting and decorations of their homes.
Next day I went to the Mall of the Emirates, it's
a huge mall. I did shopping there and clicked a few
snaps. I also visited China Mall where a lot of gadgets are available. My
favourite day was when I visited The Dubai Mall, Burj Khalifa and the
beautiful fountain outside. Dubai looks most beautiful at night. I bought

we packed our bags. Dubai is amazing. This holiday cannot be expressed in just a few words.

My parents took me to Saputara, Shirdi and to see the Statue of Unity in
Diwali holidays. At Saputara, I had fun at the lake resort. We visited the
famous Sai Baba temple in Shirdi and offered prayers. Also went to see
the world’s tallest statue which is located near Sardar Sarovar Dam. I felt
proud to see the iconic statue with a height of 182 Me-
ter (600 Feet approx and equivalent to nearly 60 storied
building) height statue of Sardar Patel. There are two lifts by which one
can visit upto the chest level of the figure. View of the Narmada river
and surrounding places from the statue is marvellous. Through this vis-
it, I got to know about Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Iron Man of India.

Krabi, on southern Thailand’s west coast, is a province
characterised by steep, sheer limestone cliffs, dark forests, and more
than a hundred offshore islands. Some of its most popular beach
destinations include the Poda Islands, Tup Island,
Laolading Island, and they are like giant rain forested
rocks, lagoons and natural pools, accessible only by boat.
My mother and I went there and had a great time swimming
and snorkelling. Also, we enjoyed bumpy speedy boat rides to all these
different islands. There we could experience sea life closely and touched
the colourful fishes.

grandmother’s home in Udaipur. As we all know, it's
a beautiful city with many lakes and gardens. I visited
many of them. The town is colourful and is full of
tourists in the winter season.
I had a wonderful time at my grandmother ’s kitchen garden. I
plucked Cherry Tomatoes, Lemons, Brinjals, Bottle Gourd and picked
gooseberries. The kitchen garden also has a sugar cane field, my
mother plucked sugar cane for me, and we enjoyed chewing fresh sugar cane. These are
the most beautiful memories of my vacation.

were doubtful, will it be safe? Will we be able to visit all
places? One more question was will we get Jain Food there?
We must tell you, Kashmir is really Heaven on Earth, the
mesmerizing scenery is out of this world. People there were
straightforward and helpful despite a very tough life. Not only did we
get Jain food, but we also got everything we wanted, be it Pauwa in the
morning, Maggi, Bhindi etc. everything. We even had a Gujarati Thali.
When we visited Point Zero and returned to Srinagar, we were
very late we reached Srinagar at 1 am in midnight, but to our
surprise, there was a night market from Dal-Lake to old Bazar
almost two km long, it reminded us of our very own Manek Chowk.
Whenever Army truck used to pass through, all tourists used to loudly say
"Bharat Mata Ki Jai", "Vande Mataram" and they
used to wave hands and respond with the same en-
thusiasm, This is one of a different kind of feeling.
We will cherish the memories of our Kashmir Trip always
and would say you should also see it once in your lifetime.
My holiday was more of a religious tour where I went to Palitana- Jain Tirth. I stayed
there for two days. During my journey to Palitana, I saw the Bhavnagar salt colony which
seems like a white mountain from a distance. I visited Hastagiri which has a Jain temple and
a beautiful scenic view. At Palitana, I saw a 108 ft statue of Lord Aadinaath. I loved the stay
at Palitana with my family.

12. Travel is an absolute imperative if we want to break the humdrum
monotony of our lives. Every day of every month of every year would more or less be
the same if we didn’t venture out of our homes and travel to places we have never
been before. It will suffice to say that if we don’t travel, we would not be able to
demarcate one day from another.
Holidays stand out as unique experiences and refresh our souls with
their memories. And it is not just the actual time spent during the holiday that gives
you joy, but also the time spent in the planning and brain-storming required before
any worthwhile vacation. How we look forward to booking tickets, making hotel
reservations, searching the internet together with family to find the best deals, best
places to visit, best restaurants and touristy markets! Somehow, the entire exercise
brings us closer and leads to a lot of quality time with family members. Everyone’s
vote counts here and decisions are made unanimously; that’s what makes it such a
treat!
I believe that travel is a way of happiness and should be done for its own
sake. Waking up in strange lands and finding ways and means to explore them and
dealing with the uncertainties of travel make us richer and resourceful. I would not
be exaggerating if I said that wanderlust – the desire to wander or travel and explore
the world – is a prerequisite to finding oneself.
I always strive to fit in at least one holiday every six months in my sched-
ule. Recently, I went to Germany and Italy for two weeks. To pack a visit to four cities
in a matter of a fortnight, I had to do a lot of research on what all to do and what to
give a miss when I am there. Exploring and marvelling at the historic monuments in
some of the most visited cities of the world, sampling the wonderful cuisine of Italy
and the new found vegan love of Germany, walking the centuries old cobbled path

ways in Rome and Venice, I was so overcome with the wonder of the beautiful world
we live in. I saw the Pantheon where gladiators fought in their day, tossed a coin in
Trevi fountain, took a ride in a gondola, drank Italian espresso and cappuccino, took
in the sombre air of the Vatican, delighted my taste-buds with Italian specials; pasta,
risotto and pizza and simply gorged on gelato.
Every span of travel is a revelation and teaches us more about our world,
nature and ourselves.

15. Visual Art therapy is a form of non-conventional form of therapy which
involves using different form of mediums like paints, colours, clay, photograph,
chalk, newspaper/magazine etc. The practice is relatively new in India with a
handful of professionals.
The journey towards being an Art Therapist started when art was something
I would rely on, in time of need and for pleasure. That is when it occurred to me
why not combine my hobby with my passion for psychology. That is when a jouney
twards learning this new form of therapy began and I was successfully able to couct
my research for M.A dissertation (2017) named - "Influence of Visual Art Therapy in
Fostering Positive Emotions among Homeless Girls"
I was extremely privileged that this research was being presented at 49th
American Art Therapy Association (AATA) Annual Conference Panel Discussion,
Miami (November,2018). The paper was presented by Ms. Girija Kaimal, Assistant
Professor in the doctoral program in Creative Arts Therapies at Drexel University.
The main objective of the research was to examine the role of visual art therapy in
fostering positive emotions among girls in a home at Jogeshwari, Mumbai. It also
looked at how they would be able to channelize their negative emotions and resolve

16. their conflicts in a constructive manner. The results showed, there was a change
in the behaviour of the girls as they found it easier to express themselves through
art and found it as a non-threatening form to channelize their emotions. There was
a positive transformation. Sessions were powerful and helped them understand
themselves better and solve their unresolved internal conflicts.
The creative process of therapy involves in expressing one’s self artiscally
through different mediums which helps children/adults resolve deep rooted issues
as well as develop and manage their behaviours, attain a better understaning of
their feelings, reduce stress, and improve self-esteem and awareness.
Elizabeth Broun has rightly said,
“Art is not always about pretty things, it’s about who we are, what we are,
what happened to us, and how our lives are affected.”

19. From centuries, our tangible and intangible cultural heritage is considered as an
inspiration for life which passes down from one generation to the next. Cultural
heritage has its value and place in the heart of society. In cultural heritage,
architecture is a showcase of our rich tradition which is our legacy from the past to
the present world. Ahmedabad, our beloved city founded by Sultan Ahmad Shah, is
full of architectural treasures. It has around 350 pols (cluster of homes) that house
some of the most magnificent havelis in the city. Haveli is a traditional mansion,
usually one with historical and architectural significance.
On a bright Sunday morning, I was lucky to get the chance to go on a Have-
li Walk starting from Dhal Ni Pol with friends. We not only explored the splendid
beautyofthesegorgeoushavelisbutalsoacquiredin-depthknowledgeaboutthem.
Havelis belong more to domestic realms, unlike palaces, and forts that enjoy the
monumental status. In the bygone era, Havelis were built to cater to the business
needs of wealthy merchants. The ground floor of the Haveli was completely a
private area, whereas the first floor had a different entrance and
luxurious interiors, and was meant for doing business and entertain-
ing guests. Water harvesting was a regular feature seen in these havelis.
We can see the use of wood in abundance. Earlier, the use of wood in
architecture was a matter of prestige. Wood ornamentation on teak that forms
the facades of many grand old havelis are not just works of art. They are veritable
mirrors of Ahmedabad’s customs, deep-rooted dogmas, rituals, belief systems and
religionoftheancienttimes.Theartworkdepictstherichtasteofvisualgrammarand
optimum use of space. Interestingly two striking features grab our attention – the
human figure carved on the door frame called the ‘Dwarpal’ and the fusion of
mythical animals, Gajvyalas, generally seen at entrances and carved into
brackets of the havelis. Influence of foreign architecture is also quite appar-
ent in the intricate wood lacework facades. The basic architecture of all the
havelis remains the same with a few modifications to make each one stand apart
from others. They are constructed in total compliance with the rules of vastushastra.

20. Though ravaged by time and negligence, the narrow alleys of Ahmedabad’s centu-
ries-old underbelly have suddenly become hot property. The havelis are no longer
junk from the past. Many businessmen are bowled over by the dilapidated havelis
and have bought them to preserve a piece of heritage. After all, ‘Tradition is the
creation of the future out of the past.’
These havelis are a must visit for their intricate architecture. So let’s go ahead and
learn more about the glorious heritage of our own city before going to visit far off
places during holidays. Remember, ‘Home is where the Haveli is’.
