1. The Curse of the 7 Elves Princesses
Ulek Mayang
Tradition
Tradition of serving the yellow
glutinous rice to the ocean had
started from the administration
of Sultan Umar which in the
middle of 1800. The ritual
would be carried out before the
fishermen could go out to sea to
prevent them from suffering the
same fate as in the folklore.
Folklore
One day a group of fisherman went
fishing in the middle of the ocean.
Unfortunately, their boat suddenly
broke and they were brought by the
wave of the ocean. When they woke
up they realized that they were
stranded on a beach coast.
All of them woke up except one of
their friends. They decided to call a
shaman and the shaman claimed
that the spirit of their friend had
been taken by the elves princesses,
so he did a ritual which would call
the princesses to return their friend’s
spirit.
The first princess came and had a
fight with them but they lost the
fight. Then the first princess called
the other two princesses to fight
them but they still didn’t manage to
win. At last, the seventh princess
came, who is the eldest, the most
beautiful and the most brilliant
princess. They couldn’t even
manage to win at last but the
shaman still begged for the man’s
spirit and the princesses finally gave
back the man’s spirit and he
immediately woke up from his
slumber.
As a token of appreciation to the
elves princesses, they served them
yellow glutinous rice or “pulut
kuning” in Malay.
