WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT 1: NARRATIVE ESSAY
LECTURER: CASSANDRA WIJESURIA
SUBMISSION DATE: 14TH NOVEMBER 2013
Kitchen has always been a part of human life, even since long time ago our
ancestors have been using kitchen. The kitchen in the past and the kitchen in present
days are totally different. They used stones, firewood and branches but people
nowadays using gas, pan, spoon & forks and all those iron metallic stuff. One of them
that people tends to use when they are having soup is the Ladle especially in a family
feast. You can’t miss out this utensil out from your kitchen.
Ladle is a spoon with a bigger and deeper bowl and it also comes with a
longer handle. Most of the ladles are made from stainless steel and some are made of
silver, aluminum, wood, or even plastic. Basically it weight around 1 to 2 kg for the
stainless steel ladle. And the plastic ladle weight around 1 to 1.5 kg. Ladle length is
depends on the design, but mostly it won’t be shorter than 5 inches and the longest
should be 15 inches. Some of the ladles are made with a curved on the topside of the
handle to maintain our thumb from slipping off the ladle. As you can see, ladle is hard
and slightly heavy. The texture is smooth and isolated on white background, usually it
is made to be comfortable to use. It can keep our thumbprint each time we hold the
ladle and might easy to get scratches when it gets friction with other tools.
A ladle is a specialized spoon whichis designed for serving soups, gravies,
punches, and other liquids. Ladles can also be used for stirring and in food
preparation.

available. They can also be ordered directly from manufacturers, or through restaurant
supply warehouses. Having a soup ladle around the house can be quite useful, as these
deep spoons make great utility tools in the kitchen. Some ladles have notches in their
bowls to make it easier to control the flow of liquids, which can be especially useful
for thin stocks and juices. Sometimes the ladle can be cold when it is left and not in
use, but it would be very hot as it can absorb the heat from soup . It is used often
because the handle of the ladles is long and I can avoid hot air from my hands. The
colors of the steel ladle are silver, black, and brown .
Two characteristics set the soup ladle apart from other spoons is the first is
their deep bowl, which is designed to accommodate a large amount of liquid. Some
ladles are also designed for measuring, and they may have markings which indicate
volume for the convenience of the cook. Ladles also have very long handles, so that
they can be dipped into stockpots and deep serving dishes.
Well, this thing I do seldom use, but I always see my dad use them because he
is a Chef. And personally, I hate this thing because I grew up getting hit by my
mother with this stupid big spoon. It was the nightmare when I was child, the feel of
getting hit with ladle is unimaginable hurt. When I was 8 years old , I was preparing
soup for my lunch in the kitchen, I left it there and I go play dota2. After half an hour
I smelled something burnt so I ran to the kitchen and saw that the whole thing was
burnt out. Even the ladle was burnt as it is made of plastic. I picked up the ladle and I
sniffed at it, it smells burning plastic and some toxicity fumes. I directly throw them
away to hide from my mother. Luckily my mom didn't realized it or otherwise I'll get
hit with ladle again. I used to hate the person, who invented the mighty unbreakable
spoon but now I starts to understand they invent ladle for a special purposes. I hope to
see stop of mislead in using the ladle and prevent kids to have nightmare like me.
